Dream The fact that the text for this work even exists is a miracle. It was written by Abraham (“Abramek”) Koplowicz, a Jewish boy who was exterminated by the Nazis during the Holocaust. Abramek was born in 1930 in Lodz, Poland, and died 1944 in that country’s infamous concentration camp at Auschwitz-Birkenau. He wrote this poem during the time that his family was trapped in the Lodz ghetto. This poem was not found until 1983 when Eliezer (“Lolek”) Grynfeld, the poet’s half-brother, discovered it among their late father’s belong-ings. Children who sing this work will be transported on a magical flight around the world through time and space along with their audiences. The edition includes a detailed biography of the poet and pictures from his life.

Words of Strength Words of Strength takes the form of a dialogue be-tween the generations. Young women turn to the adult women for the knowledge and experience to overcome difficult times. “I have no confidence. I am frightened. I am lost.” The women answer by singing verses of I’ve Got Peace Like a River. The generations alternate in their singing, with the younger voices joining the adults as the message becomes clear. By the end, the two choruses sing together: “We can find the words to build a life of hope.”

DAVID ASHLEY WHITE

In love with the beautiful eyes… The composer set this same poem years earlier as part of a song cycle (Four Madrigals of Michelan-gelo, high voice, violin, and piano, #5447, publ. 2001). The poetry is from the Complete Poems and Selected Letters of Michelangelo, translated into English by Creighton Gilbert. Like its companions in the aforementioned song cycle, the text for this new choral work employs “eyes” as its central theme. As Professor Gilbert pointed out in the foreword to his book, in the Renaissance, eyes were perceived as the most spiri-tual element of the human body, and the window to the beloved’s soul.

i carry your heartConnor Koppin’s setting of i carry your heart uses only a few short lines from E. E. Cummings’ poem of the same name in a mantra-like fashion. The phrase, “I carry your heart with me” is repeated a number of times using different textures, harmo-nies and voices, thus reenforcing the idea of inter-twining two souls into one. Men’s and women’s voices are often at odds in this setting and come together only in moments of absolute unity. Part of the Lee Nelson Choral Series.

GEORGE ROCHBERG / ARR. CHRISTINA JENNINGS

Caprice Variations The arranger’s transcription includes 20 of the original 51 caprices. She chose to include those best suited to the flute while representing the enormous stylistic range of Rochberg’s entire set. Her goal in the transcriptions was to use the flute to its fullest capacity, challenging the player with dynamic, technical and stylistic extremes: the range of these variations goes from a B1 to an E4 and from pppp to ffz! She made minimal breathing and metronome suggestions, adding these only when they seemed most important. In George Rochberg’s Afterword to the Performer, he permits omitting some of the repeats and variations to suit the length and artistic discretion of the performer. However, he advocates for balance in preserving “the stylistic spread which is a fundamental premise of this work.”

Elegy Elegy was commissioned by organist Douglas Cleveland. It is a one-movement work in a lyrical, meditative style. Its harmonic language is French-influenced, but the composer considers the piece primarily melodic. Although Elegy is not a programmatic work, it is based on musical materials that are varied throughout, and suggested to the composer a restive, pastoral setting.

Triptych for Harpsichord Triptych for Harpsichord was composed in the spring of 2000 for harpsichordist Tatiana Zena-ishvili. Ms. Zenaishvili gave the world premiere of the work in a concert in Rachmaninov Hall in Moscow, Russia on January 25, 2001. She subsequently performed the American premiere at a concert in Lutkin Hall in Evanston, Illinois on April 17, 2001. Triptych for Harpsichord employs formal concepts which were commonly used in harpsichord works of the 17th and 18th centuries—toccata, variations and fugue—but no attempt was made to simulate a baroque musical style. The theme upon which the second movement is based is an old, Russian folk song. The variations have maintained the tonal style of the original melody. The fugue subject used in the third move-ment is based on a theme introduced in the toccata movement.

The Saints Sing “Hallelujah!”Arranger David Frost, who has for years been the Principal Librarian for the Columbus (OH) Symphony Orchestra, has stumbled upon something that is both clever and funny. He discovered that Handel’s Hallelujah Chorus and the traditional Gospel tune When the Saints Go Marching In share some musical elements, so he com-bined them. The resultant piece will provide a good time for both performers and audiences. Great as an upbeat concert closer or encore number. It “is a...simple work, gently propelled by near-con-stantly migrating harmo-nies, alternations in the choral fabric, frequent changes in organ color, quietly repeating legato choral chords and most designedly by the consis-tent use of motion in chorus and/or organ until the repose of the final measures...” -Leo Nestor.
