Respect, Communicate, Understand and Listen was the motto at last summer’s gathering. The participants were thirteen youth GARs and twenty-two service

providers from the Multicultural Council of Windsor and Essex County, South Essex Community Council, Youth Diversion, MCYS, YMCA, WEST, and WWWIW.

The Windsor forum was just one part of other group discussions which took place across Ontario in London, Kitchener, Hamilton, Toronto, and Ottawa. Organized by the Multicultural Councils’ Client Support Services (CSS) program the youth advisory council was launched. Representing Youth GARs throughout Ontario their goal is to promote community awareness of GAR youth; look at how GAR youth are viewed by others in the community as well as how they see themselves as part of their community.

Tilachan Dhungana and Radhika Homagai, representing the Windsor youth group, were selected to travel to Toronto and join the first CSS youth advisory council. They brought with them the top three local issues, identified by the Windsor forum: Language and Education, Bullying, and Settling in Canada.

The Multicultural Councils’ youth advisory council will meet several times. For this inaugural year, they chose to focus on education. A decision based on a shared common experiences, as GAR Youth’s first year in Canada, and the challenges of navigating the school system.

Tilachan and Radhika are part of a “from youth for youth”

Thank you!

The MCC would like to thank New Beginnings for a plaque received for participating in their 2013 Jobs for Youth Summer Employment Program.

New Beginnings had over 800 youth apply this year and 265 participants were chosen to be a part of their program. Jobs for Youth not only provides a work placement but pre and post-employment training modules and on-the-job support and mentorship as well.

involved in designing an Information Booklet to better support youth. It’ll be useful to GAR youth navigating the school system and give CSS Case Managers and community agencies a resource to guide them when helping youth.

The Enhancing the Welcoming Capacity of Windsor Essex research study is being conducted through a partnership with the Multicultural Council of Windsor

Essex (MCC), the South Essex Community Council (SECC) and the Department of Sociology, Anthropology, and Criminology at the University of Windsor. The study was made possible through a grant from the Ontario Trillium Foundation.

The research study is rooted in a 2009 project conducted by the Windsor Essex Local Immigration Partnership (WELIP) which identified the need for further examination on how ‘Welcoming’ the Windsor Essex community is for immigrants and what more the communities in Windsor Essex could do to encourage inclusiveness or belonging. The WELIP project suggested that a sense of belonging is important for well-being and for creating the desire to have a sense of permanence in a community.

In the report the “Characteristics of a Welcoming Community”, a welcoming community1 is defined as “a collective effort to create a place where individuals feel valued and included”. Ultimately, a welcoming community attracts and retains newcomers by:

• Identifying and removing barriers• Promoting a sense of belonging• Meeting diverse individual needs• Offering services that promote successful integration

By exploring the diverse ways that immigrants might participate in the social, cultural and/or civic practices that would enhance their sense of belonging in Windsor/Essex, the study will provide meaningful insights. The research team maintains a holistic perspective towards immigrants and newcomers as persons with diverse cultural and creative resources, skills, and complex histories. Settlement is broadly viewed to include the long term residence of immigrants and a perspective that values the role they can play in enhancing community life.

Over the past six months interviews and focus groups have been conducted with mainstream organizations, settlement organizations and immigrants who have been in Canada anywhere from 1 month to 15 years. Currently the research team is analysing the data from document reviews, and the interviews and focus groups. The analysis will culminate with a report to the community outlining the findings and will include recommendations on how to enhance the welcoming capacity of Windsor Essex. A community Forum will be held on Tuesday May 13, 2014 at the Ciociaro Club from 8:30 a.m. to 12:00 noon. _________________1 Esses, V. YOUTH PROGRAM AT THE WFCU CENTRE

GOPI LAL KAFLEY… A SUCCESS STORY

Gopi Lal Kafley arrived in Windsor on May 12, 2012 greeted by the WRAP team from the Multicultural Council at the Windsor Airport. Mr. Kafley arrived

from Nepal with his wife and child. They were very excited to begin their new life in Canada.

Mr. Kafley’s background as a Teacher and his dedication to his new country ignited his new determination. Mr. Kafley and his CSS worker, Ana created his settlement plan. Mr. Kafley attended Language Instruction program for Newcomers to Canada at the Multicultural Council to increase his language skills and create a social network. Not only did he attend English classes but he also partook in various workshops at the Multicultural Council as well as other agencies to learn about the Windsor Community and about how to find a job here in Windsor.

As he learned in his workshops, Mr. Kafley remembered everyone in the community who helped him. It was through this network that Mr. Kafley was first told about a position that would be available at The New Canadian Centre of Excellence as a SWISS worker to work with the newcomer parents and children in the schools. With the MCC assistance, Mr. Kafley had his resume and cover letter reviewed and his interview skills polished. It was a wonderful success. As of January 20, 2014, Mr. Kafley began his new job as a SWISS worker. He will be placed at two schools, at this time, Roseville Public School and J.L. Forster High School.

“I am very happy to start my new job. I am in training until March and then I will know if I am doing a good job. This job will help me and my family. I can now help people like how I was, to understand the schools. I want to thank the Multicultural Council for all the help they give me.”

We are very proud of you too Gopi Lal Kafley! What a success!

On November 23, 2013, the MCC’s Youth attended a basketball game between the Windsor Express and the London Lightning. The MCC would like to thank the YMCA for generously providing the Youth program with tickets for this amazing event at the WFCU Centre.

The Youth had a great time cheering for their favorite team, the Windsor Express.
