New PCC MuralsArtists from the Dominican Republic group known as MARHMI painted two murals on Building E on the Person County Campus during the sixth annual StepN2theArtZ in October. The murals, visible from the campus courtyard, celebrate the heritage of our area and a variety of PCC programs of study that help prepare our graduates for successful careers. PCC was one of three North Carolina community colleges selected to participate in the project with the Duke-UNC Consortium in Latin American and Caribbean Studies.

Reaffirmation of accreditationPCC is currently undergoing the reaffirmation of accreditation process. The College is accredited by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools Commission on Colleges (SACSCOC). Part of the accreditation process involved a visit to PCC Oct. 2 – 4 by a SACS onsite visiting team comprised of community college professionals from states in the SACS region. The team reviewed SACS requirements and standards and U.S. Department of Education requirements. They also met with faculty, staff, and students to discuss the College’s Quality Enhancement Plan. Our QEP is focused on Quantitative Reasoning and is called “QR4U.” The SACS visiting team determined PCC to be in compliance with all core requirements. In particular, the team complimented College services provided to students by Student Development and the Learning Resources Centers, including Distance Education.

Performance MeasuresThe North Carolina Community College System has established student Performance Measure Standards to provide comparative benchmarks for the individual colleges in the system. These Performance Measures monitor multiple indicators of student performance, including course success rates, graduation rates, grade point averages of graduates who transfer to four-year institutions, and passing rates on license and certification examinations (for example the National Council Licensure Examination, NCLEX-RN), which is required for practice as a Registered Nurse).During the most recent year, PCC achieved or exceed 6 of the 7 state-established Standards and narrowly missed the 7th Standard by 2 percentage points.

5A Quality College

Quality MattersPCC has adopted Quality Matters guidelines to ensure excellence in our online and hybrid classes. Quality Matters has received national recognition for its peer-based approach to quality assurance and continuous improvement in online education. Course reviews, conducted by a team of Quality Matters trained peer reviewers, highlight good design elements

and provide feedback on areas of improvement. A course that meets Quality Matters standards is awarded Quality Matters official, national recognition. PCC is proud to announce that there are now five online courses that have achieved Quality Matters certification: MAT 140, Survey of Mathematics (Heather Barker, instructor); EDU 131, Child, Family, and Community (Suzanne Beshears, instructor); PSY 263, Educational Psychology (Lynn Coates, instructor); BUS 115, Business Law I (William Hatchet, instructor) and PSY 255, Introduction to Exceptionality (Sheri Narin, instructor).

Not only does Piedmont Community College provide a QUALITY education, but it also provides an AFFORDABLE option for students! Our reasonable tuition rates along with our many scholarship opportunities as well as payment options that include student loans and a pay plan that allows tuition payments to be made over time make PCC a wise choice. Even if your goal is to earn a bachelor’s degree, you can save a bundle by completing your general college requirements at PCC and transferring to a four-year school. If you’re looking for quality AND affordability, come to PCC!

Art and Music at The Kirby Learning StudiosAre you artistic? Do you long to create paintings, sculp-tures, and drawings? Would you like to throw pots and share them with friends and family? How about learning how to play piano, guitar, or banjo in a room designed to allow notes to soar? Are you the person who sings in the choir – or in the shower—but have always wanted to be heard by a bigger crowd? It’s time to bring your creativity to PCC and join the other students who are making our campus come alive with their talents.

New forFall 2013!

GERONTOLOGYH U M A N S E R V I C E S PCC’s Human Services program is considering a new certificate in Gerontology for Fall 2013. The Human Services Technology/Gerontology certificate will prepare students to specialize in direct service delivery work to older adults and their families. The curriculum provides both theoretical and applied models for understanding issues of aging.

Graduates may qualify for employment in nursing and rest homes, specialized adult care services, respite services, and other programs servicing older adults and their families. Graduates choosing to continue their education may select a variety of programs at senior institutions.

If you are interested in the Gerontology certificate program, contact Sheri Narin, Human Services Coordinator, at [email protected] or (336)322-2203 or Kelly Holder, Dean of Health Sciences & Human Services, at [email protected] or (336)322-2208.

The Office Administration program has given me the opportunity to have not just a job, but a career. The opportunities that I have to further my career are endless. I was able to obtain employment at the Caswell County Health Department because of the co-op requirement for the program. My education as well as my PCC instructors prepared me very well for my position.
