  • Spring 2012

  • Maybe you have never been to church, been attending all your life, or you are just getting back into it after a long break. Wherever you are in your journey, we are praying you find a place to call home and, more importantly, a relationship with Jesus Christ.

To that end, we want to offer you some insight into Gateway’s church family and information you will hopefully find helpful in taking the key steps needed to connect with your brothers and sisters in Christ here.

    - Pastor Karl

    What is our destination?

If it is God’s will, by the end of 2012, Gateway’s family will gather 700 strong for worship. By 2014, Gateway’s family will grow to 1,000 worshippers in multiple services and venues, united around God’s passion to see St. Louis Discover Life in God’s Family. What is the big deal about family?

  • If it is God’s will, over the next 5 years we will see 500 baptized into Christ and added to God’s family. This is our goal. If each one of us leads ONE person to Jesus Christ in the next 5 years—we will be living out God’s passion to seek and save the lost. We must be a church driven with a desire to lead people to Jesus. Inviting our family, friends, coworkers, classmates, and neighbors into a saving relationship with Jesus Christ is why God established His Church.

This vision will require fervent prayer, a united church, and a servant’s heart. This vision will impact our personal lives and the life of Gateway.

  • The different stages of a tree are great pictures of what it means to be transformed into fully devoted followers of Jesus Christ. In one year we can see a tree change through different seasons—blossoming, becoming strong and full, and eventually bearing fruit. You, as part of God’s church, can be vibrant with new life, full of sustaining growth, and yielding the fruit of God’s work in your life. At each stage of this personal transformation process, we offer a course and a decision on your part to go deeper in your relationship with Christ.

Live For Christ is for those who are considering making Jesus Christ their Lord and/or making Gateway their church home (also open to members who have not yet taken the course). This class is being offered on Sunday, March 18, April 22, and May 27, from 9:00-10:30 am during first service.*

Grow In Christ, the second course, is open to those who have completed the Live for Christ course. This is the right class for those who are ready to step up to the next level in their spiritual maturity. It is offered every other month, with the next offerings during the first worship service on Sunday, April 15, from 9:00-10:30 am*

Serve Like Christ is our third course in the series. This class helps you identify and use the gifts and talents that God has given you in the right ministry area that fits you. If you have completed the Live for Christ and Grow in Christ courses, this is the next step. This class will be offered on Sunday, April 29, from 9:00-10:30 am during first service.*

*Sign-up sheets for all three courses can be found on the ministry table in the Information Hallway.

  • Just as everyone matures at different growth rates physically, we all go through different stages of spiritual growth. Our desire is for you to continue growing in your understanding of who God is, deepening your relationship with Him. All are welcome to try any Gateway Growth Group on Sunday mornings, Wednesday nights, and/or home group meeting throughout the week.

Early Sunday Morning S.U.B.M.I.T. (Supporting Underground Believers/Martyrs In Trials) Teacher: Ashley Jeralds What does it mean to be persecuted for your faith? Is persecution the same in every country? Every month we focus on a different country, learning about the culture, religion, government, and persecution believers experience there, and pray for them. As we travel the world you will find faith, strength, encouragement, and hope from the testimonies of believers as we share in their victories and their suffering. (Note: graphic content about persecution may be shared.) S.U.B.M.I.T. meets before worship services on the 1st Sunday of the month from 8:00-8:50 am for study and on the 2nd Sunday of the month from 8:15-8:45 am for prayer, so you can join us and then go to a 3G group or worship service afterward.

    9:00 AM

Logos Teachers: Tom Harland & Jim Kremer We are reading and discussing the book, “Blue Like Jazz,” by Donald Miller. In this fun, best-selling book, Miller describes his remarkable journey from being familiar with a distant God to knowing a culturally relevant, infinitely loving God. Each week we will discuss a portion of the book and related Scripture. Spring 2012 Study: Blue Like Jazz

Seekers Teachers: Tony Hartsfield & Julian Cosentino Author Douglas Adams’ book, The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy, pokes fun at the human longing to understand our existence. But his best answer—a meaningless number—is no answer at all. We Christians see this differently. We know we cannot figure out the meaning of “life, the universe and everything” by ourselves, but God reveals it in His Word. Spring 2012 Study: God’s Creative Word (Gospel of John)

Women’s Group Teachers: Paula Reed & Elaine Lewallen After finishing our study of “Five Lies That Ruin Relationships,” we will study “Waiting on Christ’s Return.” This Max Lucado study will walk us through the events surrounding Christ's return, answering questions about this often-confusing subject and offering words of comfort and hope. Spring 2012 Study: Waiting On Christ’s Return

Young Adults Teacher: Jennifer Chesnutt The Young Adults course is a great discussion course. We have discussed what the Bible says about dating, sharing our faith story, worldviews, and why we can trust the Bible to be true. This quarter we delve into a New Testament book to learn more about how to be a Christian in today’s world. Come join us as we dig deeper into

these familiar scriptures! Spring 2012 Study: Book of the New Testament Pg 6

  • 10:30 AM

Carpe Diem Teachers: Bjorn Thommesen & Barry Jeralds The Book of Isaiah is perhaps best known for its prophecies regarding the coming Messiah and for inspiring Handel's song about Him. There is much more to study in this fascinating book, however, including its authorship, main themes, and what it says to the people of Israel. Join us as we delve into the 66 chapters of Isaiah and discuss them as a class. Spring 2012 Study: Book of Isaiah

Marriages In Motion Teachers: Jon & Colleen Marble Have you ever looked back over a situation/relationship and wondered how it became so messy or difficult? We will define the five most common lies that have the potential to ruin relationships with those we love. We will also uncover the source of quarreling, how our words wound, and how not to make decisions. Together, we will ask and answer the question: do wrong beliefs produce wrong behavior? We will discover that when we confront the lies we believe, there is power in knowing and applying God's truth to our relationships. Spring 2012 Study: Five Lies that Ruin Relationships

Servants of God Teachers: John Kiso, John & Angie Turigliatto Jesus is alive! And He is working all around us each and every day. This quarter we are going to study Jesus' ministry leading up to His crucifixion and resurrection. Then we will look at how He continued to live and be active among the early disciples and church even after His ascension. Through this study that parallels the preschool and elementary children's study, we will look and find where Jesus is today in our lives and those around us. Join us for fellowship, Bible study, prayer, and support as we each strive to be servants of God each day. Spring 2012 Study: Jesus Is Alive and Well Today!

Women’s Daytime Bible Study Facilitators: Erin Feinstein & Jessie Hough Women, join us on the 2nd and 4th Friday mornings (9:30-11:30 am) as we delve into scripture with Beth Moore’s James: Mercy Triumphs DVD-driven study. Come enjoy a special time of fellowship (childcare available upon request).

NOTE: You are welcome to participate in any course that interests you. If you have questions about the course’s content or would like more details, please contact individual teachers/facilitators through the church office.

Apologetics Track Facilitators: B.J. Browning & Julian Cosentino Join us to learn about our founding fathers’ worldview and the Biblical traceability of their faith, as well as the ideas that guided them through the establishment of our great nation.

Highest Praise Adult Choir Track Facilitator: Marcia Haverly Gateway’s Adult choir, Highest Praise, combines a love for singing with a desire to assist worshippers in uniting hearts, minds, and spirits passionately in glorifying Jesus. Join us as we use God’s gift of music to draw others with us into an encounter with the living God.

Hymn Singing Track Facilitators: Paulette/Dan Limbaugh & Margaret Bradshaw Gather around the piano to sing your favorite hymns and learn their historical backgrounds. Join in fellowship, hear testimonies, short devotions, and share prayer requests with others who enjoy praising our Lord with the hymns we so love.

Men's Study Track Facilitators: Brian Barnard & John Kiso We will be studying Romans for an in-depth look at the power of the gospel, how we are justified by faith, and how to live our life every day for Christ as men of God. Join us as we discuss how to apply scripture, pray and support each other, and fellowship with others in the same daily struggles of this world.

Single & Parenting Track Facilitators: Paula Reed & Elaine Lewallen If you are a single parent, you are probably tired, overwhelmed, and feeling a bit underappreciated. We understand the unique challenges faced by single parents and want to help. Single parents from all backgrounds are invited to join this video-based study.

Women's Bible Study Track Facilitator: Juli Nelson Do you suffer from foot-in-mouth? Often lost for words? Author Mary Kassian offers us practical instruction in listening, articulating thoughts, and resolving conflict. Discover how to strengthen your vocabulary, revolutionize your speech habits, and energize your relationships through language.

Women's Boundaries Track Facilitator: Cindy Teigen What are boundaries? Why do I need them? How do I get others (and myself) to recognize and respect mine? We will learn when to say yes, when to say no and to take control of our lives through this study of “Boundaries,” by Cloud & Townsend.

Women's Fitness Track Facilitators: Paula Hilderbrand & Lubna Hector Join us for devotion and to work out together as sisters in Christ. Come tone your physical and spiritual muscles with us—you will be encouraged and strengthened, in body and soul!

  • Let us not give up meeting together, as some are in the habit of doing, but let us encourage one another—and all the more as you see the Day approaching. Hebrews 10:24-25

Small Groups meet in homes, at church, in coffee shops, or workplaces in order to do life together. For someone seeking truth, it is a safe place to ask questions about who Jesus is, why He came, and what He desires from us. For a Christ follower, it is one of the most effective places to grow. A group can range from 4 to 16 people—all there to build accountable relationships and friendships. The goal of every Small Group is to help you grow in Christ by discovering real friendships, deep faith, and authentic community.

How do I get into a group? If you are attending Gateway, joining a small group is a great next step to growing in Christ. We have groups meeting all over St. Louis throughout the week. The church office has contact information for each of these groups:

Arnold Group (Facilitators: Danny Nelson & Rob Ladage) Meets Sundays at 6:00 pm; currently following and discussing the spring quarter Gateway Sunday sermon series (childcare available).

Ballwin Group (Facilitators: Bjorn & Lore Thommesen) Meets Tuesdays at 7:00 pm; currently studying the “Faith Series,” by Ray Vander Laan, on the promised land and on death and resurrection

Chesterfield Group (Facilitators: Jon & Colleen Marble) Meets Mondays at 6:00 pm for potluck dinner and fellowship; currently studying the book of 1 Samuel; switching to Sunday nights (still at 6:00 pm) to study the Gospel of Luke in April (childcare available as needed).

Creve Coeur Group (Facilitator: Josh Hough) Meets every other Thursday night at 6:30 pm; currently studying “Prodigal God” (childcare available).

Eureka Group (Facilitators: Mike & Jenni Biggs) Meets Saturdays at 7:00 pm; currently studying the books of 1 and 2 Peter.

O’Fallon Group (Facilitators: Brian & Jen Johnson) Meets Tuesdays at 7:00 pm; currently studying Christian living, or how to be a better spouse, parent, employee, and overall Christian (childcare available).

Young Adults Group (Contact Person: Jennifer Chesnutt) The young adult group meets every other Friday at 7:00 pm for prayer, food, fellowship, and fun. Location and facilitator rotates each week; contact Jennifer to get involved or find out more details.

How do I start a group in my home? Make arrangements with the 3G Team through Pastor Karl. Contact the church office to set up a time to discuss your plans.

Our main teen area is called The Warehouse. The Warehouse is where we have relevant conversations about God moving in teenage lives. Everything we do here is designed to reach middle and high school students where they are in life.

On Sunday mornings, we meet in The Warehouse for Collide Deep at 9:00 am, where we dive into God’s Word.

On Wednesday nights, we meet for Collide Live at 6:30 pm, where we learn how to put Biblical principles into our lives.

During the 9:00 am Sunday worship service, teens gather together in The Warehouse to dive deeper into God’s Word to learn how to grow in their relationship with Christ. Join other students your age in a conversation that is started straight from the Bible and led by an adult who will guide the conversation and pray one-on-one with you.

This is a great place to be on Sunday morning. We are going through a curriculum that will have us reading through the entire Bible over a 4-year time period. Join us each week as we learn about our great God through His Word.

During the school year, we pack The Warehouse with teens starting at 6:30 pm and we worship our God. This is where we learn Biblical principles to live by and learn to be fully devoted followers of Christ through teaching and relevant videos or dramas. Each Wednesday night COLLIDE LIVE includes hang time, small groups, and worship for middle school and high school students. We also have a couple of service projects planned during the semester to allow students the opportunity to share Christ’s love through an act of service in our community.

Our teens enjoy participating in SHINE, Gateway’s music and drama group for this age group through college, generally producing two performances each year. Practices are on various Sunday afternoons during the school year. See Laura Fletcher for details.

  • Pg 13

Teens and sponsors love to interact with each other outside of the church. In addition to individuals meeting for accountability and prayer, we will go on various trips during the upcoming months in larger groups.

SPRING PURITY RETREAT Remain, our Purity Retreat, is Thursday, March 8-Sunday, March 11 here at Gateway. This promises to be an unforgettable weekend, causing students to ponder what the Bible says about relationships with the opposite sex. Students stay in host homes Friday and Saturday nights, meeting with sponsors for dis-cussion and experiencing amazing personal quiet times and corporate worship.

SUMMER TRIPS The following trips are planned for the summer quarter:

Junior/Senior Trip: June 1-2. See Josh for more details as the dates approach.

Middle School students will attend High Hill Christian Camp the week of July 22-27. Plan to come to an incredible “week-of-all-weeks” to grow closer to God, develop new friendships, and have fun—all at the same time! More details available later this spring.

High School students will go to Holland, Michigan, to participate in this year’s CIY MOVE conference, held June 25-30. Incoming 8th graders are welcome!

OTHER TRIPS As specifics are finalized for each of the following, they will be communicated to teens and parents:

    Service Opportunities

    Campus visits

Weekend conference at a Bible College

For more details, upcoming events, permission forms, or answers to questions about the student ministry, check out the info and links on our blog site: http://collide.posterous.com. To find out how to volunteer your time and talent with the teens, contact Josh Hough, Youth Pastor. He looks forward to hearing from you.

College students ages 18-22 are invited to Annex, a ministry dedicated to creating a connection for Real Life, Real Community, and Real Change for you. We currently meet twice a month on Sunday evenings, with a worship night the 2nd Sunday of the month, and a “get to know you” night on the 4th Sunday. We hope you will come get acquainted with other peers and be encouraged. For more information, please send an email to [email protected].

  • We have different gifts, according to the grace given us. If a man's gift is prophesying, let him use it in proportion to his faith. If it is serving, let him serve; if it is teaching, let him teach; if it is encouraging, let him encourage; if it is contributing to the needs of others, let him give generously; if it is leadership, let him govern diligently; if it is showing mercy, let him do it cheerfully. Romans 12:6-8

At Gateway, we need everybody’s help in order to serve like Christ–including yours. Many of us come to Gateway with a background of skills and interests (music, drama, construction, food, technical, computers, sports, etc.) that can be used to help others. Whether you are brand new to church, or a mature believer, there are volunteer opportunities where you can serve. Please keep in mind though, that because Gateway exists to “Live for Christ, Grow in Christ, and Serve like Christ,” it is essential that people seeking to volunteer must first be committed to that end. Some of the opportunities to serve have requirements due to the nature of the role and its direct influence on individuals in God’s church. We look forward to helping you discover how God has wired you to Serve Like Christ.

  • The church was always meant to serve the community in which it finds itself. For Gateway, this is greater St. Louis—North, South, and West County. Because we desire to see people in our city experience Christ’s love firsthand, we deliberately pursue key partnerships with ministries through which to share this love. There are many needs—physical, relational, emotional, financial, and spiritual—and it is our calling to meet those needs like Christ.

Angel Tree Ministry (through Salvation Army) We invite Gateway families to adopt needy St. Louis children at Christmas time and bring gifts to church for them.

Armed Forces Care We send care packages to any Gateway family member serving in the military in the U.S. or overseas around Memorial Day and Veteran’s Day, in addition to sending birthday cards and notes to help them stay connected to their church family.

Bread Basket Food Pantry We provide food, paper products, and toiletries for those in need, in our church family and our community, helping fill the shelves of greater St. Louis area food pantries.

Gateway GIVE (a Gateway initiative) Each December we distribute gift cards to our congregation to purchase supplies for Circle of Concern’s food pantry and then deliver them as a group.

High Hill Christian Camp Work Day www.highhillcamp.org We support High Hill Camp through collecting donated items, plus a yearly workday, doing major renovation projects, as well as clean-up and minor repairs, to prepare for summertime.

Rebuilding Together www.rebuildingtogether-stl.org A Gateway team comes together to repair, renovate, and restore a needy St. Louis city home on one set day each year, rain or shine, all skill levels needed.

Shiloh Family Mission www.shilohranch.org Each September a group of Gateway families heads to Shelbina, Missouri to serve at Shiloh Christian Children’s Home, doing service projects together.

S.W.E.R.V.E. (a Gateway initiative) www.gccstl.org Each year, our Gateway family SWERVEs from our normal Sunday morning worship routine, doing various service projects in our community as families.
