Father Joe Vetter, Director919.684.1882 / [email protected]

President Richard Brodhead came to Duke with a vision of collaboration. He saw the potential for bringing together various disciplines within the University to promote synergy and creativity. Much has been done to bring departments out of their respective silos, promoting interplay among business, law and medicine; theology and environmental studies; athletics and business, etc.

The Duke Catholic Center has collaborated since 1935 with other faith communities on campus—learning, praying and serving ecumenically with other Christians and in interfaith projects with Jews, Muslims, Hindus, etc. Such activities have helped us to promote religious understanding while strengthening our unique identity as Roman Catholics.

Stories in this newsletter provide examples of our collaboration beyond the religious communities on campus. Cardinal Theodore McCarrick visited Duke as a result of our partnership with the DukeConversations program and the Law School. We co-sponsored the visit of Sister Jennifer Gordon with the PathWays Program sponsored by Duke Chapel with support from the Lilly Endowment. Father John McDonagh is teaching a house course this semester on Vatican II that involves five Catholic faculty

members from various disciplines, with approval from the Provost.

Our partnerships extend beyond Duke. We are grateful to the Southern Province of the Dominican Priests and Brothers for assigning Brother Jorge Rativa to serve as a Deacon Intern with the Duke Catholic community this semester. Brother Jorge connects us with the universal Church in some new ways. We will miss him at the end of the semester when he is ordained a priest and assigned elsewhere. We have been blessed to have Brother Jorge in addition to Catherine Preston, Father John McDonagh and me serving as Catholic campus ministers at Duke this semester. Dr. Paul Griffiths, Warren Professor of Catholic Thought at Duke Divinity School, led a workshop for the Diocese of Raleigh on Pope Benedict’s latest encyclical: Charity & Truth, extending the resources of this great University to Catholics across eastern North Carolina.

The Duke Catholic Center is committed to serve Catholic undergraduates, graduate and professional students. But we strive to do more. We benefit from being at Duke and we intend to make Duke a better place because we are here. We strongly support President Brodhead’s vision of collaboration and we embrace Duke’s commitment to celebrate diversity.

Welcome to Durham!Director of Development Has Experience, Excitement

Timothy J. Breslin joined the Duke Catholic Center team on February 1, as the Director of Development. Tim has a twelve-year history as a Development Director in Catholic educational settings including the last three years as a consultant to Catholic schools, religious orders and Dioceses across the country.

“After meeting Fr. Joe and learning more about the great

work that the Duke Catholic Center is doing every day with these future leaders that come to Duke to learn, I became very excited about making an impact through development,” Tim said. “It is hard to not be inspired by the difference our ministry makes for many young people every year. Having a Catholic experience as part of their education at Duke is critical. While we have a great working relationship with the University, we are not funded by Duke, making it extremely important for us to tell the great stories happening here so people know there is a great opportunity for philanthropy with the Catholic Center. A quality education is not complete without the moral and spiritual component. The impact is multi-generational.”

A native of Wilmington, Del.—where he began his development experience at his high school alma mater, Salesianum School, an all boys school operated by the Oblates of St. Francis de Sales—Tim then served as Director for Advancement at Malden Catholic High School in Boston, Mass. He previously worked for various professional sports teams including the Baltimore Orioles and Washington Redskins. Tim lives in Holly Springs, N.C., with his wife Tanya and their three children: Jackson, Kathryn and Charli.

Br. Jorge Connects with Duke Catholics

The impact and reach of the Catholic Center was extended even further this spring with the arrival of Brother Jorge Rátiva for the semester. Br. Jorge is a Dominican who was ordained a deacon for the Province of Saint Martin de Porres in December.

“He works tirelessly to make himself available to students—whether he is preaching at Mass, providing ministry guidance to

student leaders, or just chatting at Tuesday Night Dinner,” junior Rob Won said recently. “I love Br. Jorge’s appreciation for the diversity in our community and his focus on scripture.”

“My sense is that the students not only find identity with the Center, but contribute to the growth of mutual identity as Duke and Catholic students,” Br. Jorge said on his impressions after two months on campus. “To see the students struggling to live their faith in the midst of academic life and activities is really inspiring.”

“Br. Jorge has been gobbled up by the students,” Campus Minister Catherine Preston ’01 said. “Br. Jorge has had a welcome and immediate impact on ministry with students. He has helped students prepare prayer and content for leadership meetings, Bible studies, Student Director meetings, and Awakening leadership team retreat and meetings.

Brother Jorge will be ordained a priest on July 10, and will be reassigned by the Dominican Order.
