T.G.I.F.We’re not lion, this will be fun!
On February 8th 2008, the first T.G.I.F. eventfor Spring ‘08 was held in the NetherlandsCafé. The six events held during thesemester were: Chinese New YearCelebration; Spring Carnival; Mic Night;Poker Night; Artsy Craftsy and the semesterended with Cram Jam. Prizes, giveawaysand free food were at every event. Makesure to keep a lookout for next semester’sT.G.I.F events! Any student organization canco-host an event by contacting OSLA at (516)463-6914.

On May 18th 2008, the 55th governor of thestate of New York, David A. Patterson gave theundergraduate speech to the graduating classof 2008. Other honorable guests were CEO ofAIG, Martin J. Sullivan and national legalcorrespondent for the New York Times, AdamLiptak.

This year on May 15th, 2008 marked the25th year that Hofstra recognized over 50students and student groups by honoringthem at the annual Hofstra StudentLeadership Awards. The awards wereestablished to honor those student clubsand individuals who exemplify leadershipwithin the Hofstra community.

On March 5th – 13th 2008, students were ableto partake in yoga, game room tournaments,sex education jeopardy, Mardi Grascelebration, strength competition, stressmanagement groups along with healthy eatingtips, and a comedian.
Spring Leadership Retreat!I am a Trailblazer!
On Saturday, February 9th 2008, a retreat washeld for club presidents and providededucational workshops for Hofstra leaders,which included budgeting, buildingrelationships with the campus, leading aneffective e-board, programming for success,rebuilding a team, networking your way to thetop, and accessing tools for advertising. Eachstudent received a certificate for theirparticipation and a complimentary portfolio.
Stress Busters SeriesExpress Your Stress in Healthy Ways…
The Division of Student Affairs and OSLAjoined forces to provide stress free programsthroughout study days and finals. Free yoga,live entertainment, caricature drawings,airbrushing hats, and plenty of healthy & funrefreshments were provided for studentspreparing for finals.
Alternative Spring Break TripWhere’s the love?
Hofstra students and administrators spent theirspring break, March 14 through March 20,2008, volunteering in the inner city ofPhiladelphia, PA. This was the third annualAlternative Spring Break Trip for Hofstrastudents. Students each raised $450 to attendthe trip and participated in three trainingsessions.

The Hofstra Dance Team is recognized asone of the premiere college dance programsin the country. It has been nationally rankedfor the past 12 years and placed third in theDivision I hip-hop category and tenth in thejazz category at the College National DanceChampionships in 2008. The dance squadperforms its exhilarating routines at Hofstra’sathletic and other on-campus events.
Hofstra Cheer received 4th place at the2008 Universal Cheerleaders AssociationSmall Co-Ed championships in Orlando, FL.They also received 1st place in large co-eddivision and were awarded overall grandchampions in the Complete Cheer andDance Championships in Philadelphia, PA.Squad members interact with the crowd andgenerate spirit in support of Hofstra Pride.They also perform throughout the year atevents such as Family Weekend, Universityfestivals, and philanthropic events.

MUSICFEST!May 3, 2008
Hofstra MUSICFEST is an end-of-the-yearcelebration for the entire student body, faculty,staff and alumni. This year performances wereby Bayside, I Am Alaska, C-4, S.I.G.H., KristysCorner Store, and Farryl Purkis, which had atotal attendance of 2,000 people. Located onthe residential side of campus, students areable to enjoy a whole afternoon of free music,entertainment, food and fun.
Hofstra Volunteer Week!April 25- May 4, 2008
Many members of the Hofstra Communityparticipated in over a dozen programs thatreached out to help serve others. Studentsvisited nursing homes and delivered carnationsto the elderly and visited elderly homes in thearea and cleaned their yards. Relay for Lifealso occurred and raised $35,000 for theAmerican Cancer Society. Phi Sigma Sigmasupported the Annual Art ExpressionsCoffeehouse. Hofstra Men’s and Women’ssoccer teams hosted a clinic for Big Brothersand Big Sisters of Long Island.
Genocide Awareness
Rwandan genocide witness, ImmaculéeIlibagiza, author of Left to Tell: DiscoveringGod Amidst the Rwandan Holocaust, spokeabout her experiences on Thursday, May15, 2008 at 9 p.m. Her talk was sponsoredby the Hofstra University Chapter of theN.A.A.C.P. in conjunction with NewOpportunities At Hofstra, Black HispanicAlumni Association, Office of StudentLeadership and Activities, and The NortelBlack Business Council.
Schools for Schools also co-sponsored afilm viewing of War Dance with StudentLeadership and Activities.
