AQUATICS NEWS The Spotswood Dolphin Swim Team had an undefeated season this summer and won the League championship for the first time in 26 years of existence. Each meet we swam better than the week before and at the championship meet, we scored 200 points over the next contender for an awesome finish. Thanks goes to our coaches that taught everything from starts, flip turns. stroke development, streamlines, under water pull outs, no breathing, and overall endurance and speed so we could dominate this season. Coaches for the Dolphin team are Dane and Austin Folsom, Dr. Cathy Slusher, Dr. Brent Lenz, Dr. Mark Gabriele, and Kevin Gorby. The team would like to thank all the lifeguards that helped at our meets this year and working along side the parent volunteers to show the visiting team how we run a smooth swim meet. Also thanks goes to Aki for his assistance and support of the team. We even had Board of Directors from the club work at several meets testing out the new technology for timing and recording the swimmers times. We also had a Junior Dolphin Swim program that teaches young kids from 4-6 water safety, and beginning techniques for swimming. This was a successful program and is a wonderful way to introduce young swimmers to the team in the future. These little swimmers would come to a home meet and show off their skills while the entire team cheered them across the shallow end of the pool. All the swimmers received their trophies and ribbons at our annual end of season banquet held at the club on July 28th. We filled the ballroom and even had live music. Certain swimmers were recognized for receiving team awards. Many swimmers broke Spotswood Dolphin Swim team records. We have three record board posters that are displayed all season at the pool. We invite you to go to the pool and see these boards. They are changed each week if a record is broken. We even had swimmers break champ records on Saturday, July 25 at JMU Godwin pool at the championship meet. Jacob Emmerman broke the 13-14 Back and free records, Jessie Arnold broke the 15-18 Backstroke record and Julia Sheffer broke the 15-18 freestyle record. Go to the Spotswood Dolphins website www. sccdolphins.com to see the end of season video that was shown at the banquet. It was a culmination of the season and a great reminder that a new day has come for the Spotswood Dolphin Swim Team. From the General Manager:

Dear member,

I hope everyone is having a great summer thus far. As you were informed previously, Chef Ryan left us in late June to be closer to his family in Charlottesville. Since then, I have been searching for a new executive chef. I am pleased to inform you that our search concluded two weeks ago when we hired Brian Colbert. Brian has a solid history with Food and Beverage that goes back almost twenty years. He built a French culinary foundation with C&O restaurant in Charlottesville, then moved to Louisiana to expand his knowledge in Cajun and Southern cuisine before moving back to Virginia to take over the Devil’s Backbone Brewery restaurant as executive chef. He brings a wide range of expertise to the club with a focus on local products and an environmentally friendly outlook. I am very pleased to have him on board and I look forward to working with him to bring about what you, as members, would like to see.

In addition to our newly hired chef, I have also hired an activities director, Veronica Monioudis. Veronica is a graduate of James Madison University where she majored in Hospitality Management. She is from Danville, Virginia. She will be going through extensive training for about a month in different areas of the club. After completing her training, she will be responsible for sales and marketing of catered events, sales and marketing of membership as well as communications with members through newsletters and social media outlets. She has brought great organization skills, work ethic and an attitude of getting the job done. I look forward to having her on board with Spotswood team. She will do great job for us at the club. Please join me in welcoming our new additions, Veronica and Brian.

I would like to acknowledge the great accomplishment of our swim team this year. Our Dolphins were undefeated and managed to take home the championship trophy. Way to go! Congratulations to our Dolphins.

Lastly, please give us a call to arrange your Christmas party as we are quickly approaching the holiday season. I want to make sure that our members have the opportunity to book their events for this year’s holiday season.

See you at the club,Aki

After planting roots in the Shenandoah Valley with his 10-year-old daughter and 9-year-old son, Brian spent the next ten years working at C&O Restaurant in Charlottesville and then Devil's Backbone Brewery.

VERONICA MONIOUDIS

Veronica is a 2015 graduate of James Madison University with a Bachelor’s of Science in Hospitality Management and a General Business Minor. During her time at JMU, Veronica worked with Aramark, became certified in food safety through ServSafe and also received certification in tips and intervention procedures (TIPS)

Veronica spent her summers interning at the Courtyard by Marriott in her hometown of Danville, VA, where she shadowed managers and rotated departments within the hotel, with a main focus on food and beverage. While working at the Courtyard, Veronica was able to assist restaurant managers update their inventory system, train new employees, and ensure guest satisfaction. She was also able to witness VIP guest treatment when Vice President Joe Biden stayed at the property during the 2012 Obama campaign.

During her senior year at JMU, as part of her requirements for graduation, Veronica worked with a small group to plan, execute, and budget a themed dinner event for 128 guests. She worked with her group on creating a theme, and designing an environment within the dining room that brought the theme to life. From this project, Veronica became very interested in event planning, leading her to take a Wedding Planning Certification class outside of JMU.

In her free time, Veronica enjoys reading, trying new recipes, and creating new crafts for her apartment.

FROM THE TENNIS COMMITTEE Dear SCC Members:

We wanted to send out a note regarding our recent SCC Clay Court Tennis Tournament. With 110 total entrants, it was the largest tennis tournament that Spotswood has ever hosted. In spite of the rain, there were 88 matches played in 5 days. It was a great success! With this success, it is vital we take a moment to recognize all of the efforts of Rick Etchells and the SCC tennis staff - Stefan Peric, Kevin Rinker, and Joe Dillenbeck. The rain this season has created many maintenance issues and court closures. Rick and his team invested a total of 225 man hours for this tournament which included court repair and maintenance throughout the week. The Tennis Committee wanted to extend our deepest appreciation to Rick and his staff for all of their hard work and efforts. It is quite clear that this is not just a job for this group, they are all dedicated to the courts and to the tennis program. The SCC Clay Court Tournament was in jeopardy of being cancelled. With their hard work, it was not only able to be held, but the best tournament we have had. Thank you Rick and Staff. Sincerely,Kristen Suter-Blye SCC Tennis Committee

From the Golf Lesson Tee:

DAY AT THE BEACH

One of the biggest reasons amateurs struggle with bunker shots is that they don't keep a level head. No, I don't mean they panic. I mean literally. Their heads dip as they swing the club down into the sand, or they pull up to try to help the ball out of the bunker. If you want to consistently skim the club through the sand under the ball—which is the whole deal on bunker shots—keep your head as level as possible. Here's how you make that happen.

GET DOWNIt's really hard to slide the clubhead through the sand and under the ball if you swing from your standard address height. The motion is too up and down. You can see here I've widened my stance to get lower to the ground. Keep in mind that whatever posture you're in, you'll need to maintain it. Don't get so low that your body isn't stable.

AIM CLOSEREven though you're supposed to hit a greenside bunker shot fat, you don't want the club entering the sand too far behind the ball. You still have to propel it out. Pick a spot just behind the ball, and focus on that spot when you swing. It might help to pretend the ball isn't even there.

KEEP MOVINGAnother thing I see amateurs do is quit on the swing when the club enters the sand. Don't be afraid you're going to hit the shot too far. Trust me, you can make a full swing as long as you skim the clubhead under the ball. It'll come out high, land softly and stop fast. That's how to set yourself up for a sandy.

MESSAGE FROM THE HANDICAP COMMITTEE

In an effort to help each member be in good standing with their handicap for tournament play, the Handicap Committee will follow a specific revision process moving forward. Each member of the committee will take part in reviewing specific days of play to ensure that each round played is posted in the handicap system. Members will have 7 days in which to post their scores from the time their round is complete. If at that time the score has not been posted they will be notified by the Committee that they have 48 hours in which to post, if that time expires a score of Even Par will be posted for that particular round. Also, in order to participate in club events, each player will be required to have a minimum of 5 posted rounds for the current year.
