Bel l Shakespeare’s HENRY VDamien Ryan’s vision for Henry V is inspired by a true story – in 1941, for 57 consecutive nights during the London Blitz, a group of boys trapped in a bunker rehearsed a new play each week and would then perform it for others in the shelter. This production explores the rite of passage that violence and conflict offer as a threshold to manhood. It confronts the fact that – for all the horrors of war – true courage and brotherhood can inspire remarkable achievements.

In this gripping new Henry V, a talented young cast tell the story of a king who unites his ‘band of brothers’ and a nation with his eloquent words and ideas, his triumphs and humanity. When the battle is won, this production will leave you feeling uplifted and exhilarated with the belief that the impossible is possible. Presented by Rockhampton Regional Council.

Black Diggers SimulcastOne hundred years ago, in 1914, a bullet from an assassin’s gun in Sarajevo sparked a war that ignited the globe. Patriotic young men all over the world lined up to join the fight – including hundreds of Indigenous Australians.Shunned and downtrodden in their own country – and in fact banned by their own government from serving in the military – Aboriginal men had to hide their heritage to enlist. Undaunted, these bold souls took up arms to defend the free world in its time of greatest need. For them, facing the horror of war on a Gallipoli beach was an escape from the shackles of racism at home, at a time when Aboriginal people stood by, segregated, unable to vote, unable to act as their children were ripped from them. When the survivors came back from the war, there was no heroes’ welcome – just a shrug, and a return to drudgery and oppression.Black Diggers is the story of these men – a story of honour and sacrifice that has been covered up and almost forgotten. This is a live simulcast from Queensland Theatre Company presented on the big screen at the Pilbeam Theatre. This event is proudly supported by the Queensland Government.

Bangarra Dance Theatre’s KINSHIPRekindling the Aboriginal culture of

Australia, internationally acclaimed

Bangarra Dance Theatre presents

an original and breathtaking

theatrical experience: Kinship by

award-winning choreographer

Stephen Page.

Kinship opens with Brolga, a

creation story inspired by the

totemic systems in Australian

Aboriginal culture, where every

person is assigned a creature

totem related to their clan. Set in North East Arnhem Land, a young

girl ventures out before sunset and finds herself on a brolga feeding

ground. As she is challenged by her totemic temptation, she takes us

on a journey of exploring relationships between humans and creatures,

reflecting on the intrinsic spirituality of the natural world.

The performance continues with ID, investigating what it means to

be Aboriginal in the 21st century, asking important questions of

identity. In a series of dramatic and humorous observations, Stephen

Page contemplates human nature in modern society where skin colour

can drive perceptions rather than embracing differences. This bold

dance theatre work celebrates the resilience of Australian Aboriginal

culture in both its traditional and contemporary forms. Presented by

Rockhampton Regional Council. Part of the 2014 See It Live Theatre

Season.
