started Taylor Moving in 1996. Thecompany specializes in moves withinBoulder County, but is big enough tohandle anything within the state whetherit’s commercial or residential. It hasprospered and grown these 15 years.
Giving to the CommunityBuilding a successful business allows the
Taylors to give back to the community. They’ve donated moves for such localnonprofits as The Boulder Shelter for theHomeless, Boulder Valley Humane Societyand Habitat for Humanity. Besides helpinglocal organizations with in-kind and otherdonations, Leah Taylor notes, “We makesure we donate 5 percent of our yearlyprofit to local charities to give back to thepeople that keep us in business in thesehard economic times.”The Inn Between of Longmont is a
recipient of the Taylor’s generosity. Execu-tive Director Donna Lovato says: “We havean annual fundraiser, The Sweet Taste. Forthe second year the Taylors donated moneyand were one of the event’s sponsors. Theylet us use their truck to transport more than100 silent-auction items, and they even senta staff person to drive the truck. They gaveas a sponsor, too.”The Inn Between of Longmont provides
transitional housing to individuals andfamilies for up to two years, until theyare ready to transition back into thecommunity. “New this year, if we have aresident who has found housing, Tayloroffered us the van for the move,” Lovato
says. (The Inn Between of Longmont,250 Kimbark Street, Longmont,303.684.0810, www.theinnbetween.org)Janine D’Anniballe, Ph.D, director of Ac-
cess, Emergency and Community Servicesat Mental Health Partners, who works withMoving To End Sexual Assault (MESA),says of the Taylors: “They’re so consistentand reliable in their support of us. They arecommitted to the cause and are so lovely towork with. They come through for us.”For MESA’S annual Canine Classic, its
biggest fundraising event, the Taylors do-nated a truck and a driver to pick up 60 gal-lons of water in Lafayette; then MESA usedthe truck to move everything – tables, tentsand more – between their office and theevent, saving MESA time and money. Andthe Taylor’s always bring a few of their fiverescued dogs to the race each year as well”MESA assists sexual assault survivors and
their loved ones and helps more than 1,000individuals annually through its Rape Crisisand Information Hotline. (MESA, 1333 IrisAvenue, Boulder, 303.443.0400, Rape Crisisand Information Hotline 303.443.7300,www.movingtoendsexualassault.org)
Making Moving GreenerYou've probably seen Taylor's distinctive
green moving vans around Boulder andsurrounding counties. "We're consciouslygreen," says Glen Taylor. "We take backused boxes from anyone - we just ask them
to be flattened out and brought to our of-fice. We sort through them, recycle the badones and then we organize the good ones bysize and offer them at a reduced rate tosome customers or charities that need theextra help to re-use. Otherwise, the boxeswould likely all be thrown out."Boxes that are no longer usable go to
EcoCycle in Boulder, along with plasticbottles and metal cans that Taylor recycles.Fuel economy is important, too. In local
moves, Taylor makes a conscious effort topick up an entire load in one trip, instead ofgoing back and forth.
Relying on the TaylorsTaylor Moving recently acquired a
15,000-square-foot, climate-controlled,ADT-secured storage facility. “We can nowhouse goods for a lot more families,”Glen Taylor says.Taylor Moving is based at 4949 N.

Aerial TributeChoosing the best
way to pay tribute to aloved one after death isan important decision. As more familieschoose cremation, theyare frequently undecid-ed on what to do withthe ashes.Ascension Scattering
is offered by AerialTribute in cooperationwith Greenwood &Myers Funeral Services. It is a an economicaland eco-friendly alter-native to traditional scattering and burial.Ascension Scattering is unlike conventional
scattering, because it releases some or all of yourloved one’s cremated remains (also known as“cremains” or “ashes”) into a naturally occurringcolumn of rising air over the Rocky Mountains, known as a thermal. A portion of the crematedremains ascends to the upper atmosphere wherethey can remain indefinitely. This results in aunique and inspirational return to nature and thesky.
This type of memorial is special, because nomatter where families live they can always lookheavenward and be reminded of their loved one.Ascension Scattering is a growing tradition thataddresses memorial needs of families everywhere.

Infant Aquatics at Swim Float SwimThe following letter was written by a parent whoenrolled her three children in Infant Aquatics atSwim Float Swim!
Dear Judy,We live in Lafayette and our property is
quite large and beautifully landscaped witha gorgeous water feature the kids love tosplash around in during the summer. Thepond, surrounded by rocks, drops to adepth of 4.5 feet.May 18th was a warm, sunny day. I was
home with my two young daughters doingyard work. Saxon, my 16-month-old, hadjust completed her fifth week of lessonswith Cynthia, but had yet to practice swim-ming in clothes. She and Stori, my 4-year-old, were playing on a large trampoline lo-cated next to the pond, while I was garden-ing.My back was turned pulling weeds in an
adjacent garden when I heard Stori call forme. She said “mommy, mommy, Saxonneeds you” I turned around to see Stori, standing by the water, but Saxon wasnowhere in sight. My mouth went dry, andmy heart sank as I envisioned Saxon face-down at the bottom of the pond. I remem-ber running about eight “Incredible Hulk”steps with no feeling in my legs. The pondcame into view, and there was Saxon, notsubmerged on the bottom, but floating onher back on the surface of the water. She
was wearing overalls with a long sleeveshirt underneath. Her breathing was re-laxed, considering the water temperaturewas 58 degrees.I felt calm as I made my way to where
she was floating. I was so relieved; Icheered her as I laid down at the edge ofthe water. I continued to tell her what agreat swimmer she was as I gently placedmy hands under her head, re-enforcing herconfidence in the floating technique shehad been learning during her swim lessons.I was surprisingly very composed, and
helped her float over to the side and thenencouraged her to flip over and grab theedge, where I grasped her little hands andpulled her wet body out. During the entireepisode, she never cried, never even made apeep. I let her run around the sunny yardin her wet clothes and diaper for a few min-utes while I regained the strength in mylegs to actually take her inside to get freshclothes and digest what had just happened.
According to Stori, “Saxon fell in the waterface first and rolled over to float.” It waspretty amazing!
Water safety has always been one of mygreatest priorities, and all three of my kidshave taken lessons at Infant Aquatics. Ihave always felt that educating children tobe safe and respectful around water isparamount, because you never know whensomething like this might happen. Thankyou over and over again Infant AquaticsTeam!

DesignerGeckosDesigner Geckos, the first gecko store in the
world, has already achieved great success afterjust two years of operation at their storefront at11747 N. 75th St. in Hygiene. While it started out as an online store, the
need for another building developed into thelocal store idea, and things took off from there.Leopard geckos are the fastest growing pet inthe world today in popularity due to theirbeauty, very tame and friendly personalities, cleanliness and lack of pet odors, ease of care, and low cost.“They are really like little dogs in a lizard's
body,” says Ray Roehner, who owns the opera-tion along with his wife Carol. “The geckobonds to their owner in a very special way, andthey will sit on your lap and watch TV withyou, hang out on your shoulder, or even go fora ride in the car, all very much like a dog! Someof our young customers become future veteri-narians very soon after getting a gecko, becausethey become so interested in the biological as-pects of them that they start to research intogeckos, give presentations at school, and writepapers and even books about them.”
“We love the educational aspect of what wedo. It's our way to further the gecko hobby, ed-ucate our customers, and have a lot of funalong the way,” says Ray. “We keep the prices ofour equipment, supplies, and geckos affordablefor our customers. Seeing the joy in our cus-tomers’ eyes when they stop by the store andbring in their geckos to show us them as theygrow is what makes it all worthwhile for us.That's really what Designer Geckos is allabout.”

Huntington Learning CenterCan tutoring help your child? A growing body
of research suggests that it may – and that it maynot. The outcome depends largely on the process;on the use of practices that research has shownto be effective. If these “best practices” arefollowed, terrific strides are very likely possible. What are best tutoring practices? While not
all researchers agree on every aspect, a consensusis growing around several characteristics. Theyinclude:• Certified Teachers/Program. Teacher
education, prior experience, and specializedtraining do make a difference. Look for certifiedteachers working within certified programs.• Standardized Diagnostics. The only effective
way to build a program is to use a diagnostictemplate that assesses skills against national dataand measures.• Individually Prescribed Programs. There
is little debate here: individualized programstailored to a student’s unique needs work best
and fastest. Period.
• Intrinsic Motivational Techniques.Whilenot all agree on this, most researchers find thatprograms encouraging internal, “intrinsic” moti-vation (rather than relying on external rewardsor trinkets) achieve more sustainable results.
• A Practice of Engaging Schools. Tutoring, when used, should be one tool for building skills, confidence and motivation – but only one. Tutor-ing should support and work with the student’steachers and school in a systematic alliance.
Tutoring is an investment in your child’sfuture. When you look at the many optionsavailable, talk to the organizations and ask ques-tions to ensure that the help you get is effective.
