Understanding the needs of today’s corporate companies in producing accurateservices as well as sustaining human recourses, the Centre for ContinuingProfessional Education at Taylor’s University organised a one-day talk titled ‘TheDabbawalas of Mumbai’ that inspired over 400 professionals from variousindustries.

The talk, which was held in Kuala Lumpur and Penang, saw Dr. Pawan Agrawal,Chief Executive Officer of the Mumbai Dabbawalas, giving a clear insight into thesuccess of the Dabbawalas in Mumbai in a humorous and heartwarming manner.According to Dr. Pawan, the system and beliefs of the Dabbawalas should bepractised not only in the working world, but also in daily lives.

“One very important factor for the system to work is the fact that theseDabbawalas are mostly illiterate and are often easily satisfied with what they haveearned. Although gaining recognitions and a little fame worldwide, they are notaware of how important or how big these achievements are supposed to be. Tothem, as long as they have done their job well and get paid every day, they arehappy and will continue until the day they are not fit enough to do so.”

“By loving your job more and be thankful of what you have achieved all the time, you will find that you will be happier not only at work, but also on your daily life. Inreturn, your superior will be satisfied with your work and will eventually reward youaccordingly,” added Dr. Pawan, who has spent nine years in research work withthe Dabbawalas to complete his PhD studies. He has also started to provide freeeducation to the children of the Dabbawalas, who can’t afford to pay for their

Dr. Pawan (standing right) listening to comments from one of the attendees at his talk in KualaLumpur.

Mr. Kevin Meeks, Vice President of Customer Service at Volvo Car Malaysia Sdn.Bhd was one of the many inspired participants of the talk. “To me, one of the keylearnings was the power of commitment to a cause, and the importance of havingcontingency plans in place, so that the customer experience is nevercompromised.”

“This came across clearly in the talk, and is something that I believe we oftenoverlook in the quest for greater efficiencies in our organisations. If a group ofpeople like the Dabbawalas, with zero technology support and simple operatingsystems, can get this right, we should certainly be able to do the same in ourcompany.”

Mr. See Eng Wah, a General Manager at a telecommunication company, found thetalk very informative. “It was a very eye-opening and informative talk by Dr. Pawan. The Dabbawalas is uniquely Mumbai and it cannot be copied elsewhere evenwithin India because of some very obvious reasons but I was still pretty amazed athow these people can work with a zero error rate, which corporate organisationstoday are finding it impossible to achieve,” said Mr. See, who also thanked CPE fororganising such an interesting talk.

A ‘Dabbawala’ is a person who carries and delivers freshly-made food from one’shome to the office in lunch boxes (also known as ‘tiffin’ or ‘dabba’). Every day, approximately 5,000 Dabbawalas deliver home-made food to about 200,000

customers in the nooks and corners of Mumbai, India, with precision andpunctuality. Despite most of the delivery staff being illiterate, there is less than onemistake in every 6 million deliveries – an amazing system considering there is nomodern technology used; just bicycles and a simple colour coding mechanism. Asa result, the Dabbawalas have been awarded the Six Sigma level of performancefor their accuracy and customer satisfaction, and have become a symbol ofhonesty, hard work, time management and a case study in supply chainmanagement.

The talk by Dr. Pawan Agrawal is part of the Taylor’s Executive Leadership Seriesorganised by Taylor’s Centre for Continuing Professional Education. There will beanother seminar titled ‘A Conversation with Asia’s Best’ in June 2013 and a talk byNick Vujicic in August 2013. Anyway, at a relatively young age of 24and having no previous workexperience, the opportunity to teach atan established British University and topursue a funded PhD was simply toogood to pass. So, this is how I ended upbeing an academic. I’m very passionateabout teaching as well as conductingacademic research.

When I decided to relocate back toMalaysia, I had a few key criterions inmind when searching for the rightplace for me to continue with mycareer. The chosen institution must bewell-established, have a fantasticreputation, guided by a noble vision ofits role in the advancement of societythrough education, and one thatembodies core values that are in linewith my own. Taylor’s University fulfillsall these and that is why I joined.

1. Describe some of your mostimportant career and personalaccomplishments.

One of my biggest career achievementsthus far was managing the largest suiteof degree programmes at NewcastleBusiness School (Northumbria University)with a cohort size of approximately 1,000undergraduate students. This is asignificant accomplishment because Imanaged to carry out the role effectivelyeven though the job scope wasextensive. The fact that they now havefour Programme Leaders to manage theoverall programme instead of just one, during my time, indicates how demandingthe original role was.

As for the achievement that comes withthe highest degree of personalsatisfaction, it has got to be thecompletion of my PhD. Even though itwas quite a long while ago, I will alwaysremember the mixture of joy, elation, pride and relief as I stepped out of theviva session with very minoramendments despite the work being100,000 words in length (rather longeven for a PhD!). The many years ofhard work has certainly paid off in theend.

2. Share with us about a time whenyou had to overcome major obstacles,be it personal or career related. Whatwere the key learnings?

Back in 2010, I was working up to 16hours per day for weeks on end. Therewas just so much to do – lecturing, research, managing programmes, etc. Iwoke up one fine day and feltexcruciating pain in my back. It was sobad that I couldn’t physically get out ofbed. I’d never experienced such a thingbefore and I was terrified as I lived aloneback then. I thought to myself then, I’mstill so young and here I am completelyincapacitated – in fact, they had to breakdown the door to get me to a hospital! As

What motivates you to want topursue these passions toexcellence?

One of my passions in life is to helpyoung adults unlock and also realisetheir full potential through education. This is because education has openedmany doors for me and, therefore, Iwould like to ensure that it extends thesame sorts of opportunities for othersas well. In fact, I strongly feel that thisis how I could best contribute tosociety. That is why, even though Ihave taken on a research-focused rolewithin TBS, I remain very passionateabout teaching and in striving to be abetter teacher. Moving forward, nomatter what the future holds for mewithin the University, I would alwaysinsist on doing at least some teaching.Another major motivation for me topursue the said passion to excellenceis the fact that I am now a father. Eventhough my son is only 8 months old, Iwould like to ensure that he gets agood “education” in all aspects of lifeat home as he grows up. Again, thismotivates me to be as good, asdedicated and as passionate aneducator as I can be.

5. What does the future hold for youin your new position at Taylor’sUniversity – any exciting plans, developments, achievements?

As the new Associate Dean forResearch & Innovation here atTaylor’s Business School, my primaryfocus is on fostering a strongerresearch culture within the school. This would be achieved through amulti-pronged approach which include:

capacity building (i.e. developingacademic staff researchcapability & skills as well asaiding in the recruitment ofresearch-active staff)encouraging researchcollaborations (within the school, across the University as well aswith our industry partners)emphasising research aroundselect distinctive themes (toleverage on the specificexpertise of our facultymembers).

I didn’t know what went wrong at thatstage, what raced through my mind wereall the things that I could/should havedone in my life. It turned out that the muscles that weresupposed to hold my backbone straightsimply gave way. The three majorcauses were the long working hours, anot-so-healthy diet and also an acutelack of exercise. It took me a few weeksto gradually recover and throughout thatperiod, I was given a cocktail of threedifferent painkillers to numb the pain.Even though this episode is not exactlyan obstacle per se but it certainly took alot of effort to overcome.

In terms of lessons learnt from theincident above, I have come to therealisation that nothing is more importantthan one’s health. Once you damage it ina significant way, even just once, it isvery hard to nurse oneself back to a fullyhealthy state. Besides, it prevents youfrom doing the things that you want ordesire. Hence, priority must be given toleading a healthy lifestyle – one thatincludes a balanced diet, a reasonableamount of exercise and, mostimportantly, a good work-life balance. Ina nutshell, one must practice moderationin all things.

3. Why did you decide to enter into theeducation field? Why did you joinTaylor’s?

I have to say that the decision to enteracademia came about purely by chance. The story began back in 2005 when I hadjust completed my Master’s degree atNewcastle Business School (NorthumbriaUniversity). While attempting to secure ajob in the UK, I found out that my almamater was looking for graduate tutors towork as full-time lecturers. At the sametime, they were required to pursue aswell as complete their respective PhDswithin 3 years! It was a bold initiative toactually test if this grueling schedule wasindeed achievable.

one is the publication of three issuesof TBS’ Taylor’s Business Review(TBR) journal since I took on the jobas Acting Managing Editor andsubsequently as Managing Editor inthe past 9 months. In addition, thejournal is now listed on Cabell’sDirectory and will also be featured onEBSCO Host soon. I’ve got a numberof exciting future plans in the pipelineand one of those is to try to get TBRlisted in Scopus next year.

6. What is the one thing peopleshould know about what you do,but don’t?

I’ve got a rather peculiar habit where Istart rearranging things around mewhen I am stressed. This stress-relieving exercise usually involvesstacks of books and/or documents,office/home furniture, stuffs in thekitchen, etc. So, if you ever see mecleaning my office and switchingthings around, it is perhaps not thebest time to look me up. Unless, ofcourse, if the intention is to invite meto go for a cup of coffee!

Irrespective of the culture one grows up in, there is a universal proverb that says‘shirtsleeves to shirtsleeves in three generations’. It generally describes that whilethe first generation may be the one who created a fortune for the family, the wealthwill not last through the third generation, who is born with a silver spoon and willonly consume the financial fortune left by the earlier generations. This is especiallyrelevant in the context of family businesses that run across generations.

With approximately 50% of its students helming from family-owned businesses,Taylor’s Business School is set to explore various platforms to prepare thestudents to take on their family businesses in future.

On 9 April 2013, Taylor’s University, through its Taylor’s Business School, signed amemorandum of understanding with Family Business Academy, an initiative ofFamily Business Network Asia (FBN Asia).
