2 SPORTSBEAT // 24 SEPTEMBER 2015

Oh how the Victorian media is basking in the glory of Patrick Dangerfield leaving the Crows.

Everyone is trying to out-scoop each other, yearning to have the latest surrounding his move home to Geelong.

It actually has led to so many different stories that it is hard to know which one is true.

Now the Victorian media commentators are suggesting that Adelaide should just step aside and allow Dangerfield to leave for the unacceptable compensation which has been offered by the AFL.

Hearing Mark Stevens on Channel Seven say that Adelaide is being unfair to Dangerfield if it attempts to match any Geelong deal is a bit harsh.

Quite simply it is laughable to expect Adelaide to just lay down and lose its best player for little in return.

Current reports that Dangerfield and his manager Paul Connors are declaring that they will go into the pre-season draft leaving

Adelaide with nothing if the star midfielder is not allowed passage to the Cats for the AFL compensation pick, which is likely to be around 14 or 15, or worse, cannot be the club’s response.

Looking at the way Dangerfield finished the season and what he has said about the club, it does not make sense he would want the club to suffer in any way by his departure.

This would seem to be coming more from his manager than him.

At the moment, it appears that Dangerfield is leaving the Crows on an amicable basis.

Although not entirely happy with his decision, which might not be all his own doing, the club will strive to get the best possible outcome for moving ahead.

Adelaide deserves nothing less for losing a player of Dangerfield’s ilk.

Melbourne was given pick three for losing defender James Frawley to Hawthorn under the free agency rules and he is nowhere near the player that Dangerfield is.

Dangerous media circus

It has been described as the biggest upset in Rugby World Cup history and it was masterminded by an Aussie.

Former Wallabies coach Eddie Jones is at the helm of Japan which surprisingly defeated one of the tournament favourites South Africa 34-32 last weekend – the Blossoms first ever win in 24 years of the World Cup.

Australian opened its Cup assault against Fiji early Thursday morning.

It backs up on Saturday against Uruguay.

Aussie Davis Cup doubles pair Lleyton Hewitt and Sam Groth had their chance but couldn’t overcome the Murray brothers and the parochial Glaswegian crowd to send Australia to the final.

In what was always going to decide the semi-final, the Aussie grit was on full display on Saturday as the pair took the fight to an epic five sets, but just failed to pull off what would have been one of Australia’s gutsiest Davis Cup victories.

World number three Andy Murray beat Australia’s top-ranked player Bernard Tomic in the reverse singles on Sunday to claim the tie for Great Britain.

THUMBS DownTHUMBS UP

BY STEPHEN O’LOUGHLIN

BEATBOXDangerfield was selected at pick 10 in 2007 and has since become one of the elite players in the competition.

He has been well developed and looked after in that time, particularly considering he was allowed to spend his first year as a Crow at home to finish his studies.

He is also now coming into the prime of his playing abilities.

That means Adelaide can’t just let him go.

It must match the offer, which is why the restricted free agent rule was brought in.

While Adelaide may have benefited itself in the past from the free agency system with the luring of Eddie Betts, Carlton similarly had the opportunity to match but chose not to, much to its detriment.

Matching Geelong is not just for the future of Adelaide either.

Adelaide must stand strong. The Victorian media will have something new to write about soon anyway.

The fairytale wasn’t to be for the Crows and it never seems to be when such storylines are played out either. Now our two AFL clubs are delving into off-season preliminaries with possible trades and delistings high on the agenda, while a new coach is also required at West Lakes.• The Power has started its dreaded

cutting with Kane Cornes and Tom Logan retiring, big men Jarrad Redden, Mitch Harvey and Mason Shaw are not in coach Ken Hinkley’s thinking for next year and rookies Sam Russell, Johann Wagner and Irishman Daniel Flynn have not been offered new contracts

• Forward Jay Schulz re-signing comes as somewhat of a surprise and it is hard to see Hinkley include Schulz, Patrick Ryder, Matthew Lobbe, Justin Westhoff and potential trade pick-up Charlie Dixon in the same line-up

• There has also been some coaching re-structuring with Tyson Edwards shown the door and Nathan Bassett coming in to look after the defence, Matthew Nicks takes over the forward line and Garry Hocking will now assist Michael Voss with midfield matters

• Then there’s a ‘Cornes’ to coach the Magpies in the SANFL – what the? – yes, Chad Cornes returns from Sydney to take the helm of the reserves squad in the local competition

• Its traditional guernseys all round for this weekend’s preliminary finalists – no more Power Rangers jibes for the Hawks

• Disappointing that Swans great Adam

Goodes does not see it as a viable option to join other retiring stars in the traditional AFL grand final parade next week with fear of still being booed – farewell Goodesy, you have been a testament to the game

• Sydney won’t be as disappointed to see the back of Lewis Jetta, who is set to move back to Perth next season with West Coast his most likely venue of choice – his failure to stay focused on helping his current side remain in the finals race was clear to see and he looms as a liability wherever he ends up next year

• Silly season has made way for walking season with numerous players looking for new homes this trading period – there will need to be plenty of action early for them all to get done because if too many are left to the last minute, as usual, then some may not get done – watch this space for all pending trade news over coming weeks

• Bulldogs president Peter Gordon has already requested a Collingwood blockbuster with his club to open the 2016 season at the MCG

• What was the AFL doing authorising those new ugly, club sweaters? – will anyone really buy them?

• While it was the last time we’ll see an AFL game at ANZ Stadium, only getting just over 31,000 was a terrible crowd for a finals encounter – however, with the SCG only fitting a maximum of 46,000, it is time other major sporting events are not simply handed to Sydney because it’s this country’s largest populated city, Adelaide Oval with a capacity of 53,500 cannot be overlooked from now on

Footy footnotes

It’s not quite State-of-Origin but it is still state versus state – Victoria versus Western Australia – in this weekend’s two AFL preliminary final encounters in Perth.

The potential of an ‘all West Australian’ derby grand final adds to the intrigue of this weekend’s clashes.

However, Hawthorn, despite its week one finals lapse, is once again a hot premiership favourite with a decider against West Coast the most anticipated outcome.

The break will hold Fremantle in good stead. But the question is whether it has the firepower and game plan to kick a winning score against the Hawks.

Fremantle’s ability to pressure and restrict its opposition from scoring should be on display but its capabilities in attack are what has many doubting their chances.

The Dockers will clearly have to take advantage of every foray forward. They cannot afford any second half fade-out as experienced against Sydney in the qualifying final two weeks ago.

Much will rest on small forwards Michael Walters and Hayden Ballantyne to do the damage. Captain Matthew Pavlich must be influential as well if his side is to advance to the season-decider where he can become a lauded premiership hero.

Big man Aaron Sandilands should have aerial dominance against David Hale and Ben McEvoy. It will be up to Michael Barlow, David Mundy, Lachie Neale and Matt de Boer to contain the drive provided by the Hawks engine room of Sam Mitchell, Luke Hodge, Jordan Lewis and Liam Shiels to be successful.

A fit Nathan Fyfe could be the key. If the Dockers star is over his quad complaints, he could steer the home side to a victory.

His ability to bring teammates into play is his greatest attribute so if he is able to get on top then Fremantle will get the run of play.

In the Hawthorn attack, Jarryd Roughead and Cyril Rioli are yet to put their stamp on the finals and the Dockers cannot allow them to start here. But the Hawks also have Luke Breust, Paul Puopolo, Isaac Smith and even Luke Hodge who have put their names on the scoreboard.

Dockers coach Ross Lyon started with the mind games at the beginning of the week suggesting tagger Ryan Crowley would be considered, now that he has served his drug suspension. But it would not be in the side’s

State versus Statebest interests if he played.

Lyon has had a more attacking group in the middle in the absence of Crowley this season and maintaining that greater clearance ability is more important to his side winning this week than restricting an opponent’s influence.

Fremantle can expect the arrival of the unsociable Hawks on Friday night. But with a few players on two fines, they won’t risk missing the GF for another misdemeanor.

The home ground advantage of Domain Stadium cannot be underestimated, which is perhaps the main reason the Dockers are still in the mix.

While many are simply expecting West Coast to come out on top in the other preliminary final, North Melbourne won’t be overawed by its opponent having beaten them earlier in the season.

The Kangaroos still rely heavily on ageing midfielder Brent Harvey. Should his impact be reduced, then it seems North Melbourne’s chances also diminish on Saturday night.

In the ruck contests, the influence around the ground of best big men, Eagle Nic Naitanui and Kangaroo Todd Goldstein, will be crucial to either side gaining a decided edge.

AFL finals PREVIEWBY DION HAYMAN

FREMANTLE VS HAWTHORNFriday 7.50pm, Domain Stadium

Hawthorn has won seven of its past eight games against Fremantle including their only prior meeting this season in Launceston by 72 points. The Hawks won 17.13 (115) to 6.7 (43) with four goals from Luke Breust and three from Luke Hodge. Hawthorn won every quarter and kept the ladder leaders to just one goal at half-time. Fremantle’s only win against Hawthorn since 2010 came at the MCG in 2014 when the Dockers won by 19 points, 17.8 (110) to 13.13 (91) when Matthew Pavlich finished with five goals. The Dockers overturned a six-point half-time deficit with five goals to one in the third term.

The Hawks have bossed the Dockers in their 20 years in the competition, taking 23 wins to Fremantle’s eight in head-to-head competition. In addition, Hawthorn has won seven of its 12 games against the Dockers at Subiaco. The Hawks also won their only meeting at the WACA giving them an 8-5 advantage in Perth. However, the sides haven’t met at Subiaco since 2011 when Hawthorn won by 51 points. Fremantle hasn’t beaten Hawthorn at home since winning the 2010 second elimination final by 30 points. Their only other finals meeting was the 2013 grand final which Hawthorn won by 15 points. Hawthorn is playing in its fifth straight preliminary final, in which it has an 8-6 record. Fremantle is in its fourth straight finals series and second preliminary final in three years. The Dockers lost their maiden prelim to Sydney in 2006 but beat the Swans in 2013.

To win the premiership, Fremantle will need to win a third successive final for the first time in its history. The Dockers are 3-2 in home finals. Hawthorn is 2-4 in finals games outside of Melbourne, 1-3 in Perth and 0-1 against the Dockers in Perth. The Hawks are attempting to reach their fourth straight grand final. FREMANTLE: $2.40 HAWTHORN: $1.60

WEST COAST VS NORTH MELBOURNESaturday 7.15pm, Domain Stadium

North Melbourne has won its past two games against West Coast including their only meeting this year in round 10 in Hobart. It was tight all day. North led by 18 points at quarter-time, trailed by seven at the half and was back in front by a goal at the last change. Scores were level after Josh Kennedy’s goal at the eight-minute mark of the final term but North kicked clear with back-to-back goals from Jack Ziebell and Todd Goldstein and went on to win by 10 points, 13.7 (85) to 10.15 (75). Shaun Higgins finished with four goals and Ben Brown three while Kennedy kicked three for the Eagles. North also won their only clash last year at Subiaco by 38 points, 12.10 (82) to 6.8 (44).

West Coast won five on end from 2011-13. North hasn’t beaten West Coast three times in a row since four straight wins from 1997-98. The sides have since played six times at Subiaco and twice at Bellerive. North has a 5-11 record against the Eagles at Subiaco and an 8-14 record against them in Perth, taking into account six games at the WACA. They have met four times in finals for two wins apiece – their most recent was West Coast’s 96-point win in the 2012 first elimination final. North has reached the last four in consecutive seasons for the first time since seven straight preliminary finals appearances from 1993-2000. North has played in 19 preliminary finals for nine wins and 10 losses.

Adam Simpson’s first preliminary final as a coach is against his old side. The Eagles are playing just their second preliminary final in the last decade and first since 2011. The Eagles are 4-2 in preliminary finals. They are unbeaten in home preliminary finals having beaten Melbourne at the WACA in 1994 and Adelaide at Subiaco in 2005. West Coast hasn’t won consecutive finals since the 2006 finals series. WEST COAST: $1.20 NORTH MELBOURNE: $4.65

GREGORY – Bridgeway Hotel

The two Western Australian sides have dominated the AFL landscape this season and it appears they will continue at next Monday night’s Brownlow medal count.

While all the fanfare has been around Fremantle star Nathan Fyfe, missing five of the Dockers’ past six games could be costly when ‘Charlie’ (Brownlow Medal) comes into question.

Fyfe will need to be well ahead of his rivals by round 17 to claim the coveted individual honour, which now seems unlikely.

Lachie Neale’s impact at the Dockers cannot be underestimated and he could prove the thorn in his teammate’s prospects.

Fyfe may still be in a position to share the award as challengers hunt him down over the final rounds of the season.

That chase is set to come from a pair of crosstown rivals as well, in the form of last year’s winner Matt Priddis and teammate Andrew Gaff.

The Eagles duo have been the standouts for their club all season and with few other teammates to steal votes away, it is set to be a race as to who comes out in front.

An Eagle to outshine Fyfe

AFL BROWNLOW MEDAL

BY STEPHEN O’LOUGHLIN

Many have touted that Priddis has had a better year than last and he certainly comes under the notice of the umpires.

Fellow midfielder Gaff has been as prolific for West Coast this season, even more so, if that’s possible, than his award-winning counterpart.

The count could go either way, with both Priddis and Gaff most definitely worthy winners on the night.

The potential for multiple winners is high where all three could win it. But more likely one of the Eagles may share ‘Charlie’ with their Dockers rival or even dual West Coast success.

Departing Crow Patrick Dangerfield will loom large but looks set to miss by a few votes, but still finishing in the top five.

The absence of votes from Adelaide’s cancelled round 14 clash against Geelong could be telling for the Cats-bound onballer.

The AFL will be hoping Dangerfield is not within three votes of the leader at the end of proceedings, proving no votes should have been placed for that particular round.

Then there is North Melbourne’s Todd Goldstein. But ruckmen don’t win the Brownlow, it’s a midfielders’ medal.

It is questionable whether he will poll enough to be in contention, especially to knock off the likes of Priddis, Gaff or Fyfe.

Hawthorn’s Sam Mitchell is a perennial vote-getter and will again be high among his club’s ranks but he will receive hot competition from fellow midfielders Jordan Lewis and skipper Luke Hodge which will reduce his chances of winning.

The same club battle will limit the hopes of a Swans victory between Daniel Hannebery and Josh Kennedy, with other teammates likely to pinch a few key votes throughout the season.

Dane Swan, 2011 medalist, and Scott Pendlebury from Collingwood will be prominent as usual, especially over the first half of the count when the Magpies were at their best.

At Port Adelaide, Travis Boak and Robbie Gray will be its major players with the Power captain possibly just eclipsing his dynamic counterpart but will not be among the top 10 at the finish.

West Coast midfielder Andrew Gaff could rise above his leading WA counterparts and be a surprise Brownlow medal winner on Monday night. Photo: AAP

SANFL FINALS PREVIEWBY CHRIS KENDALLMore in-depth SANFL discussion FROM CHRIS KENDALL can be found at www.sanfl.com.au this season.

GRAND Final

WEEK four

WOODVILLE/WEST TORRENS V WEST ADELAIDE Adelaide Oval, Sunday 2.10pm TV: Channel 7 Radio: Life FM 107.9, ABC891, 5AA, Triple M

The decider for 2015, with the western suburbs set to rock, regardless of which side takes out the big one. West Adelaide booked its place after dispatching Central District by 53 points in the preliminary final last Sunday, with the Bulldogs appearing to hit the wall after two long months of virtual sudden death games. The season would have been seen a success at Elizabeth given there was minimal recruiting and a slow start to proceedings, before a barnstorming run to the finals that revived the emotion of Woodville in 1986. Careful recruiting over summer and continued growth of a number of younger players who seized their opportunity should give Central a springboard to remain in September contention in 2016.

The Eagles have been the benchmark all season and the benefit of a week off should keep them mentally fresh. Their style of football, while effective, can be mentally taxing after long periods and the chance to have a short break can be just the tonic to refocus on this week. West Adelaide should have some key personnel in the mix for selection after missing last week, including Taite Silverlock, Aaron Fielke, Logan Hill and Adam Hartlett, which will make for some very tough decisions for coach Mark Mickan. The loss of youngster Jack Agostino after a quad injury eases the pressure a little and while he would be extremely unlucky to be dropped after kicking two goals in his SANFL debut last week Jaydn Brind may be another who will miss. The third and fourth choices will give plenty of headaches all week and narrowing them down will be a much harder task than that faced by the Eagles who need to replace the season-ending knee injuries to Angus Rowntree and Angus Poole. The logical choices there would look to be Matthew Appleton and Joe Sinor, but coach Michael Godden has swung surprises during the year which it can’t be ruled out again.

Hartlett’s return to defence will ease the load on Tom Keogh who should get first look at Eagle spearhead Michael Wundke, giving Hartlett the role on Andrew Ainger further up the ground. Mickan may face a tough choice in defence, as to whether he can keep both Riley Milne and Brad Helbig there, particularly with the return of Hartlett and given that may leave the Bloods one too many taller options down back.

The Eagles will miss Rowntree’s grunt and clearance work around the middle, so if Appleton does come in, he may need to prepare

to take a defensive role on West’s ball magnet Chris Schmidt who worked his way into the contest last week with class. The role on Kaine Stevens will be one for Godden to consider at length, as he broke clear repeatedly last week en route to 33 damaging possessions and if allowed space can create havoc through the centre. Sam Martyn may have an opportunity there, as his ability to break the lines may push Stevens into a less offensive role and reduce his influence on the contest.

Eagles skipper Luke Thompson should get Daniel Webb as his initial opponent, with the defender making up for a slight height disadvantage with spring and the ability to hit the ground running.

The ruck duel will be crucial with Ryan Willits squaring off against Eagle Marc Borholm. While Willits can push forward and be very damaging, Borholm has also proven menacing at times in attack.Dragging him away from the forward 50 will increase the chance of Willits making a point of difference in a smaller Bloods attack.

Most grand finals are hard to tip on paper and this is no exception. There is no question the Eagles have been the dominant team all season and have demonstrated their ability to dictate the terms of a contest if allowed the early opportunity to do so. Michael Godden’s men have been the best team virtually all season and most key factors ought to point to them in this one. But I’m going to back the Bloods to break the second longest premiership drought in the SANFL and have Milner Road rocking come Sunday night.Tips: West Adelaide 13-24 Jack Oatey Medallist: Kaine Stevens (West ADEL)

The making of golf’s new No.1

To consider how impressive Jason Day’s rise to world number one is, you have to know where he’s been.

Long before Day won his fourth tournament in six starts to become the youngest Australian to reach golf’s summit, he had a plan to get there.

But long before that, he was just lucky to get anywhere.

Golf began as an escape for Day. It was an escape from a poor childhood and from being teased at school for being ‘right off the boat’. It was a place to find peace. And it was something he was good at.

Father Alvin gave Jason a rotting three-wood from the Beaudesert tip and from the age of three began drilling the sport into the boy from their base in the small regional Queensland town.

Alvin and his wife Dening worked long hours at a meat factory to help pay for the sport and the family existence.

But when Day was 12 his father died from stomach cancer. It was a moment that would first send the pre-teen off the rails but end up being a salvation of sorts.

After Dening watched her boy start to drink alcohol and get involved in street fights she figured enough was enough.

Fearing for his life as much as anything she borrowed money and sent Jason to a boarding school where there was a golf academy.

“If my dad didn’t pass away, I don’t think I would have been in a good spot,” Day admits.

“For my mum to sacrifice and my sisters to sacrifice for me, so I could get away to a golf BY BEN EVERILL – AAP

academy and work hard, it’s something I’ll always be grateful for.”

It was at Queensland’s Kooralbyn International School he met instructor Colin Swatton, his current coach and caddy.

After a few years together at school Day told Swatton he wanted to be world number one. He wanted to emulate Tiger Woods and wrote out a plan needed to do it.

Several near misses in majors and the fact he had closed just one of seven 54-hole leads on the US Tour after the British Open this year had plenty labelling him a choker.

“I think the last thing that was lacking was the mental bucket,” Day said.

Now, with his first major under his belt and his new number one status Day has reset his goals. He wants every major and he wants to be Australia’s greatest ever.

Postecoglou recalls key Socceroos trio

S occeroos coach Ange Postecoglou returned a trio of Asian Cup winners to his squad for a crucial World Cup qualifier with Jordan next month.

James Troisi, Tomi Juric and Trent Sainsbury have been named in Australia’s 23-man squad for the October 8 match in Amman, which Postecoglou said was the toughest assignment of their 2018 World Cup qualifying task so far.

Joining them is a surprise inclusion - uncapped left-back James Meredith, who plays with Bradford City in England’s third tier.

If Australia can win the match over its closest Group B rival it will take a stranglehold on the group, keeping it on track for the 2018 tournament in Russia.

Making way for the four inclusions are Jackson Irvine, Chris Ikonomidis (Olyroos duty), Aziz Behich and Ben Halloran. Still missing are captain Mile Jedinak, first-choice goalkeeper Mat Ryan and key forward Robbie Kruse.

BY BEN MCKAY – AAP

Postecoglou said he was close to calling up his skipper despite a recurrence of a hamstring problem.

“At a stretch he might have made this camp, but because he’s had that setback maybe he’s coming back too early, I think it’s wise to us to make sure Mile’s 100 per cent and right for the November games,” he said.

Postecoglou said he was hopeful the key three would return for November qualifiers against Kyrgyzstan in Canberra and Bangladesh away.

He suggested Meredith’s selection came partially as he was seeking answers to a problem position.

“I still think the full-back positions are an area where we don’t have as much depth as other areas of the park,” he said.

“It’s served us well in the past to bring guys in and see how they look in our environment.”

The Socceroos lost 2-1 on their last visit to Jordan in 2012, their most recent World Cup qualifying defeat.

Australia sit tops of the group with three wins from as many games, followed by Jordan two points back.

Postecoglou said the match would be a great test.

“The atmosphere will be fairly hostile ... I’m kinda looking forward to it because I believe we’re making progress.”

Falcons rise but can they bring down Saints’ halo?I

n its first year back in the top flight of the amateur league, Payneham Norwood Union has pulled off a remarkable feat by

reaching Saturday’s Division 1 grand final.

It is an outstanding achievement for a club that rose to the top echelons of the competition in 2010 from Division 4 before falling back to Division 3 just as quickly, only to rise again and now be only one win away from celebrating its best ever result.

The Falcons must get past the might of Goodwood Saints at Adelaide Airport Stadium this week for their third premiership in a row.

The Saints will be pursuing their seventh premiership at this level in 11 years, which is a record that is unlikely to be surpassed by any club in the future.

Unlucky not to be among the top three at the end of the minor round, Payneham Norwood Union has had to do it the hard way reaching this point from the elimination final.

A nine goal, third quarter blitz saw it take last week’s preliminary final by the scruff of the neck and control the contest after being 15 points down to Tea Tree Gully at half-time.

However, coach Garry McIntosh, as has been his way in his long successful tenure at the club, urged a lift from his troops, which they responded to.

Injuries were beginning to tell on a hindered Gullies’ outfit, which went into last week’s clash missing a few key players and watching that toll grow larger during the match.

However, the Falcons were facing their own issues with players being sidelined as well, none greater than centre half forward Tom Langford, succumbing to a knee injury.

The rest of the side stood up and didn’t let it bother them, evident by their rise in effort following the main break. They maintained their focus to send the top side Tea Tree Gully out a disappointed 17-point loser, without a finals victory.

How it affects the Falcons this week is another matter. But they are sure to be as resilient as ever, hell bent on achieving a major upset against the competition’s benchmark.

Much will rest on the key contributors from last week’s victory to again take it up to

Goodwood Saints on Saturday, especially Anthanasi Agorastos (four goals) and Nick Jolly (five) in attack with Langford unlikely to be available. Jolly has been sensational and looms as a key player this week.

Mitch Caon, Matthew Prowse and Chase Bower were also instrumental in getting the Falcons here, but big man Cameron Milne, defender Tyler Brimacombe, nuggety Paul Lowe and skillful Louis Martin must be vital influences this week if their inspired run is to continue.

The possible inclusion of Adam Rowett could account for the absence of Langford.

Much of the Saints’ strength is in their midfield so Payneham Norwood Union must not let the likes of Shane Tuck, Anthony Skara, Brad Holzbauer, Jesse Boundy, Aaron Bayliss, Tom Anderson and Anthony Dempsey dictate terms or its hopes will be dashed early.

Milne’s battle with Goodwood’s ruck duo Angus Clarke and Matt Illman will be a crucial factor on which side will enjoy first use of the ball.

Veteran forward Eric Kells has had a standout season in front of goal. If he is given plenty of opportunities then he could finish the Flacons off single-handedly.

However, with assistance from Jacob Hughes and Reid Pinto, the usual team-oriented dismantling of opposition sides should be displayed again.

Payneham Norwood Union won’t fear the Saints on Saturday having beaten them in round 18 just before the finals. But its opponent’s dominance on the big stage is hard to avoid.

Goodwood’s experience should see it handle the pressures surrounding such an encounter and should steer it to yet another Division 1 premiership.

ADELAIDE AIRPORT DIVISIOn 2

Painting the town red

Prince Alfred OC has handled the big stage best to stun season pacesetter Unley Mercedes Jets taking out the Division 2 premiership.

The Reds took the ascendancy early and had their more fancied opponent’s measure for most of the gruelling contest.

It stuck to its pre-game plan which worked out for the club having just missed making the grand final last year.

It used that disappointment of losing last year’s preliminary final to spur it on to a better result this season.

“We were disappointed we couldn’t at least get through to the grand final last year, but having said that we probably learnt a bit from that and set ourselves to make sure we would give ourselves the best chance at getting up to Division 1 next year,” Prince Alfred OC coach Tom Martin said.

Martin also said he took something out of his side’s second semi-final loss to the

Jets two weeks before, engineering their downfall in the season decider at Adelaide Airport Stadium last Saturday.

“Unley (Mercedes Jets) were clearly the best side all year and certainly set the pace,” he said.

“They’d beaten us every time we’d played them all three times (this year), including the second semi, but we’d got a fair bit out of the second semi-final result.

“We kind of knew what we had to do. The only problem was every time we tried to do it against Unley (Mercedes Jets) they didn’t let us do it.

“It was nice (though) on the weekend to execute how we wanted to and got out in front of them early which I think was the key and the game continued to be played on our terms from there which was good.”

Despite being slow starters during the regular season, the Reds took a one goal lead into the first break, extending to about

five goals midway through the second term before the Jets rallied going into half-time.

Although Prince Alfred OC was 15 points up at the main break, the game was still in the balance but it set up the victory with a commanding third term, kicking a goal after the three quarter-time siren to take the momentum into the final term, 23 points up.

An arm wrestle ensued at the start of the last term, but kicking the first goal settled the Reds nerves to run out strongly for a 31 point triumph.

Drew Clayfield, Ryan Tromans, James Dalwood, Brendan Papps, Edward Boyd and Sam Gunning all played significant parts in the victory. Prince Alfred OC also won the Reserves Grand Final, beating Modbury by five points.

Horse Racing news

Victorian trainer Lee Freedman has quickly formed a high opinion of former West Australian galloper Disposition

and believes his latest acquisition can make a Group One impact in Saturday’s Sir Rupert Clarke Stakes (1400m) at Caulfield.

It will be the second start of Disposition’s spring campaign and his second for Freedman and training partner and brother, Anthony.

Disposition began his career with Grant Williams in Perth where he won two Listed races and ran second in last year’s Group One Kingston Town Classic over 1800m.

Owner Bob Peters then sent him to Melbourne to give him his best chance in the bigger races.

His two starts during the autumn for trainer Wez Hunter included a close second to Wandjina first-up in the CS Hayes Stakes at Flemington.

Star Tasmanian galloper, The Cleaner, has never won at Caulfield but he gets his best chance to rectify that in Saturday’s

Group One Underwood Stakes (1800m).

Recognised as a Moonee Valley specialist but having also recorded victories at Flemington and Sandown, The Cleaner is winless in three starts at Caulfield. His best performance there is a close second in last month’s Group Two PB Lawrence Stakes.

The popular front runner then followed that up with victory in the Group Two Dato’ Tan Chin Nam Stakes at Moonee Valley for the second year in succession on 5 September.

It was his fifth win from eight starts at Moonee Valley and confirmed trainer Mick Burles’ plan for another crack at the $3 million WS Cox Plate at the course on 24 October.

After winning last year’s Dato Tan Chin Nam Stakes, The Cleaner topped off his Cox Plate

High hopes for former WA star

Ready to clean up Caulfield

Now with Freedman, Group One success is not that far away.

“He’s got all the hallmarks of a good horse,” Freedman said.

“Now’s his time to prove it.”

Freedman said Disposition wasn’t wound up when he stepped out first-up for his stable in a 1400m race at Flemington two weeks ago but the gelding still won like he expected.

“We were pleased to get that out of the road,” Freedman said.

“He’s improved from that and he’ll go to Caulfield next Saturday and I think will run very, very well.

“He’s threatened to be a Group One horse for a little while now and I’m hoping next Saturday, whilst he’s down in the weights being a handicap, he can achieve it.”

Although, it has been some time since Bull Point has won a race, trainer Tony McEvoy

feels the stallion is capable of surprising punters here in the Sir Rupert Clarke Stakes.

Bull Point’s last win was in February last year, scoring for then-trainer Gai Waterhouse in the Group Three Manfred Stakes.

The five year-old son of Fastnet Rock finished third behind Zoustar and Dissident in the Group One Golden Rose as a three-year-old and was third behind Trust In A Gust and Dissident in last year’s Sir Rupert Clarke Stakes when trained by Chris Waller.

McEvoy said Bull Point was fitter for his two runs this time in and showing him on the training track that he can still be competitive in feature races.

“He is working like a Group One horse and deserves to be there on Saturday,” McEvoy said.

“I know his recent form is uninspiring, but I thought his last effort was much better, his condition just gave out late in a fast run race.

preparation with a win in the JRA Cup at Moonee Valley.

However, that race is being run a week later this year and doesn’t fit the lead-up program Burles has mapped out for the eight year-old.

Therefore, there was no other choice but for a return to Caulfield and while The Cleaner will be meeting the strongest field he has faced since last year’s Cox Plate, Burles feels this is his gelding’s chance to break his track jinx.

Burles declared that his veteran had thrived since returning to his Longford base in Tasmania after his latest win.

‘‘He couldn’t have worked any better,” he said. “It’s amazing that he’s bigger and stronger than ever.”

Burles hopes the Underwood Stakes will show The Cleaner’s true Cox Plate chances.

‘‘If he can’t beat this field he probably can’t beat them in the Cox Plate,’’ he said.

The Underwood Stakes favourite is Contributer, who prepared for his first Group One start of the spring with a solo gallop at Moonee Valley.

Godolphin trainer John O’Shea took the opportunity to send Contributer to the home of the Cox Plate on Tuesday morning and Melbourne stable foreman David Charles was pleased with the dual Group One winner’s workout.

O’Shea added the Underwood to Contributer’s spring program after finishing fifth in the Dato Tan Chin Nam Stakes first-up, which saw him displaced as Cox Plate favourite.

It’s a strong field that will line up on Saturday with Makybe Diva Stakes winner Fawkner, PB Lawrence Stakes winner, Mourinho and New Zealand four year-olds Mongolian Khan and Volkstok’n’barrell.

WHEN A MAN OPENS THE DOOR OF HIS CAR FOR HIS WIFE, you can be sure of one thing – either the car is new or the wife is.

A COUPLE WALKING IN THE PARK NOTICED A YOUNG MAN AND WOMAN SITTING ON A BENCH, passionately kissing. “Why don’t you do that?” said the wife. “Honey,” replied her husband, “I don’t even know that woman!

A FARMER IN THE FIELD WITH HIS COWS COUNTED 196 OF THEM, but when he rounded them up he had 200.

Ricciardo getting back to the front

20. In what year was Rugby’s World Cup first held?

FIVE POINT EXTRA

I t has been a frustrating season to say the least for Red Bull driver Daniel

Ricciardo but he is beginning to find his way back to the front of the grid in the latter part of the Formula One season.

After returning to the podium in last week’s Singapore Grand Prix, Ricciardo will be hoping to make it to the top step this weekend in the Japanese Grand Prix, although past results haven’t been kind to him in Suzuka.

Since Hungary where he finished third, Ricciardo and the Red Bull has been gradually improving to where he wants the car to be.

Engine problems have been his major issue throughout this season but the team seem to have worked them out for now, which is giving the Australian more time on the track to do what he does best – trying to win races.

Ricciardo couldn’t hide his delight after finishing second in last Sunday’s Singapore Grand Prix.

It was also the first time since last year’s Chinese Grand Prix

that the team had qualified on the front row of the grid.

“Firstly, nice to be back up here,” said Ricciardo, who saw former team mate Sebastian Vettel beat him in the Ferrari

“It has been a while, its good. Bit of a coincidence with Seb and I.”

Red Bull has regularly found itself the fourth-best team this season, but it always predicted the car could shine on the tight confines of the Marina Bay Street Circuit.

On a similarly tight circuit at the Suzuka International Race Course, Ricciardo could go one better on Sunday but is just hoping for a good result now the car is handling as it should.

“It’s fast, it’s flowing, and it’s got everything,” he said. “ (It’s a) wonderful circuit.”

“I love going to Japan and I’m absolutely fascinated by Tokyo.

“Suzuka is normally a good track for us.”

Ricciardo was fourth in this race last year after crashing out during practice and a similar top-five finish would please him this weekend.

IT’s a joke
