Jumps racing throughout Australia has become a divisive issue over the past few years,

but it’s a shame the naysayers are getting most of the publicity.

The disappointing thing is that it is giving them the greater focus, despite the fewer numbers in protest, and governments seem to be listening to them without due consultation of what really occurs in the horse racing industry.

The small group of protesters outside Oakbank last weekend took all the coverage away from the racing itself and now we have a Racing Minister siding with them, while lacking any non-biased knowledge to support their argument.

His agenda to ban jumps racing is hard to understand, considering his dual Ministerial role and the Oakbank weekend draws in so many visitors from overseas and interstate.

There has also been little or no point of difference from the media either, providing the public with the issues from both sides, and the SAJC has

been conspicuous in its silence surrounding the issue.

It just seems to give a leg up to the minority over those who actually do their best for the horses.

At the same time, the protesters’ actions seen on TV over the weekend were particularly contentious – extremely abusive to patrons entering the event.

It is this type of combative behaviour that is often frowned upon in other political situations.

Sure we don’t want to see injury or even death result to either horse or jockey, but these horses are highly loved and looked after by trainers, strappers and all stable staff.

It is hard to believe that these so-called animal welfare activists do not understand the alternative will, on most occasions, be death to the animal anyway, as many will not be cared in the same manner once racing life comes to an end.

Accidents do happen in any sport, but where do we hear the protesters elsewhere?

After being away from the sport for six years and with just six months training, swimming champion Grant Hackett has surprised many with his performances at the Australian Swimming Championships over the past week.

It has even culminated in selection back on the Dolphins’ squad for the World Championships in Russia in July. That followed his fourth placing in the 200m freestyle final to qualify for the relay team.

At 34, it was a remarkable achievement racing guys more than 10 years his junior. Even further improvement is likely with more time in the pool leading up to the worlds. Could Rio 2016 also be on the cards?

Disappointingly the Adelaide Thunderbirds must begin searching for a new coach after coach Jane Woodlands-Thompson announced on Tuesday that she would step down at the end of the current trans-Tasman season. She cited the incredible demands the role placed on her and her family.

She has been the rock that has led the Thunderbirds to two championships since the 2008 inaugural season. The side has struggled in the early stages of this season, sitting bottom on the ladder with just one win and a draw from six games.

Netball SA has declared it will advertise internationally for a replacement who will, hopefully, be appointed in time to implement their own recruiting procedures.

Ahh but horses don’t make the decision to jump over hurdles I hear the protesters say – well, they obviously have never seen a horse refuse a jump, just ask a jockey.

And we’re not clubbing seals here!

What would be the outcome of the nearly 140-year tradition of Oakbank if jumps racing ceased?

The world’s biggest picnic race meeting could be doomed.

Attendances have been proven to be higher on days when the club does run jumps meetings compared to those without.

People thus may frequent Clare Easter races instead or families may simply holiday at other locations altogether, which could be further detrimental to this State’s economy.

More to the point, we lose another unique event on the SA calendar so why doesn’t our major events people grab it by the horns and return it to its former glory.

Round one usually produces several anomalies. Remember 2014 grand finalists Hawthorn and Sydney both lost first up. Results from this year’s opening weekend may be hard to line-up for a few rounds anyway.It was a stunning display from the Crows while the Power was crunched hard at its own game by a ruthless Dockers outfit. So what did we get out of week one of the 2015 season?• Following a long pre-season, injuries are

the last thing any player wants to succumb to in round one, but a few big names already appear sidelined for an extended period – Lions skipper Tom Rockliff (broken ribs and punctured lung), Carlton’s Dale Thomas (shoulder), Collingwood’s Steele Sidebottom (broken thumb), Gold Coast Suns Jaeger O’Meara (knee) and West Coast Eagles Mitch Brown (knee)

• Will Stevie J ever learn – reported in the game against Hawthorn on Easter Monday for a solid kidney punch to Sam Mitchell. It was Stevie’s 17th report.

• The fade-out was due for the Bombers and unfortunately it came in the last quarter against the Swans when 41 points up, only to lose by eight points

• Is Gold Coast finals ready yet? Coach ‘Rocket’ Eade doesn’t believe so? What the???

Footy footnotes

It doesn’t get any easier for Port Adelaide this week, coming off a crunching clash with Fremantle where the Power was

beaten at its own game.

They will need to prepare for this more often throughout the season as clubs follow Port’s lead in fitness and tough defensive play.

The Power must prepare for a similar contest on Saturday night when facing Sydney at the Adelaide Oval.

The Swans proved their fitness level was high with a resounding fourth-quarter effort to come from 41 points behind to defeat a flagging Essendon last weekend.

The loss of ruckman Matthew Lobbe pre-game against the Dockers proved costly as new recruit Paddy Ryder had to do the bulk of the work around the ground. This meant his adaptability of moving forward could not be used when required.

This should encourage coach Ken Hinkley to bring Jarrad Redden back into the senior line-up for the first time since 2013 to come up against Sydney’s enviable big-man combination of Mike Pyke and Kurt Tippett.

Redden’s return may come at the expense of erratic forward John Butcher, who came in for Lobbe late last Sunday night.

Key defender Alipate Carlile also must prove himself, waning late in last week’s contest with fitness concerns again. He is likely to face Lance Franklin or Tippett in the Swans’ attack.

The players would be expected to lift in front of their home fans for the club’s opening home game of the season and especially on the big stage of a Saturday night. It will be yet another fight to the death as they experienced last week.

Adelaide will be keen to build on its round-one success with Collingwood now in its sights on Saturday.

The Crows were very impressive in the way they disposed of North Melbourne last week through new found run and pressure on the opponent.

They will need to reproduce it at Etihad Stadium this week to keep the momentum going.

Pre-season thoughts were that the Magpies would struggle a bit this season, but they were imposing in beating Brisbane at the Gabba last Saturday night.

The Lions threw everything at them late in the contest, but Collingwood showed a strong

resolve to hold on for victory.

It will be imperative that Adelaide brings the pressure it displayed last week to the beginning of this match in an effort to keep the Magpies down from the outset.

Steele Sidebottom (broken thumb) won’t be fronting in a plus for the visiting side which has added options available to make the trip to Melbourne.

Small defender Luke Brown (corked thigh) is the only injury concern and his fitness will be assessed during the week. Coach Phil Walsh has the likes of Scott Thompson, Matt Crouch, Brodie Martin, Mitch Grigg and James Podsiadly ready to fit back in for Saturday night’s twilight fixture.

The Crows’ confidence should be high after last week and will have the belief that they can beat Collingwood away as well after achieving success there last year.

It is also vital they show it wasn’t a one-week thing by taking Walsh’s new game plan interstate and defeating a worthy adversary on their own soil.

Early wins for Adelaide could set up its season as the Power has shown in its rise over the past two years.

It should be another cracking weekend of football with both local sides in enthralling clashes in round two.

WEST COAST V CARLTONFriday 7.20pm, Domain Stadium

Carlton has won its past two games against West Coast by 24 points at the former Patersons Stadium (now Domain Stadium) in 2013 and by three points at Etihad Stadium in round six last year. The Eagles looked in control of the game with a 14-point lead at three quarter-time which they extended to 24 points at the 12 minute mark. But four goals in six minutes saw the Blues tie the scores going into time-on. Troy Menzel kicked the winner after 24 minutes and in the middle of a succession of West Coast behinds. Bad kicking has featured prominently in the Eagles’ past three outings against the Blues. They have kicked a total of 29.59 in those games while Carlton has kicked 36.34. Carlton shades this fixture 21 wins to 19 while the Eagles lead 13-9 at Domain.WEST COAST: $1.48 CARLTON: $2.65

COLLINGWOOD V ADELAIDESaturday 4.05pm, Etihad Stadium

Adelaide has won its past two matches against Collingwood. Both were last year, giving the Crows their first double over the Magpies since 2006. The Crows won by 21 points at Adelaide Oval in round nine with four goals from Josh Jenkins and by 16 points at the MCG in round 18 with three from Taylor Walker. It was their first win at the ground over Collingwood since 2009. The Crows haven’t won three in a row against the Magpies since their four straight wins from 2005-06 when they played in back-to-back preliminary finals. The sides last met at Etihad Stadium in 2011 when Collingwood won by 43 points with three goals apiece from Chris Dawes, Andrew Krakouer and Sharrod Wellingham, none of whom are still with the club.COLLINGWOOD: $2.55 ADELAIDE: $1.50

GEELONG V FREMANTLESunday 12.40pm, Simonds Stadium

Geelong and Fremantle have been evenly matched in recent years with four wins apiece from their past eight games since 2010. Those eight meetings include three finals with Fremantle winning the past two – one at the MCG in 2012 and crucially one at Skilled Stadium in 2013 when the Dockers won by 15 points. Last year, Fremantle won by 32 points at Patersons Stadium in round nine before returning to the venue of their stunning finals triumph at the Cattery in round 20. The Cats held sway for most of the day building a 24-point lead by three quarter-time, before the Dockers flew home and could have won it. Matthew Pavlich’s long bomb hit the post with two minutes to play and David Mundy had a 50m shot for goal after the siren to win the game but missed giving the Cats victory, 12.9 (81) to 11.13 (79). Geelong leads 22 wins to 11 and by 13 wins to two in Geelong.GEELONG: $1.90 FREMANTLE: $1.90

GOLD COAST V ST KILDASaturday 6.50pm, Metricon Stadium

Gold Coast achieved consecutive wins and its first double last season against St Kilda. The Suns won by 38 points at Etihad Stadium in round nine with four goals from Gary Ablett, Brandon Matera and Tom Lynch in a game which was virtually over by half-time after he Queenslanders led 13.7 to 4.4. In the return game at Metricon tadium in round 19, the Saints made a better fist of the first half, trailing by only seven points at the break, but it was a diferent story in the second half where they were blown away after half time, losing by 53 points, 17.15 (117) to 9.10 (64). Lynch booted another four goals. St Kilda leads overall four wins to three but it’s two wins apiece at Metricon where the Saints haven’t beaten the Suns since 2012, having lost the past two.GOLD COAST: $1.20 ST KILDA: $4.50

RICHMOND V WESTERN BULLDOGSSaturday 1.15pm, MCG

The Bulldogs ended a three-game losing streak against Richmond with a two-point win in their only clash last year in round three. However, they nearly blew it after leading by 38 points just after half-time. The Tigers reeled in the deficit, hitting the front with Jack Riewoldt’s goal at the 26-minute mark, only to lose to Daniel Giansiracusa’s major two minutes later. Richmond’s three wins from 2012-13 represent their only wins in this fixture since 2005. The Bulldogs have nine wins and a draw from 13 games since then. This match is at the MCG where only four of the past 14 games between the sides have been played. Richmond won the last one in 2012 by 70 points with five goals from Jack Riewoldt while the Bulldogs won the previous one in 2010 by 72 points. The Tigers lead 22 wins to 14 at the MCG.RICHMOND: $1.38 WESTERN BULLDOGS: $3.05

PORT ADELAIDE V SYDNEYSaturday 7.10pm, Adelaide Oval

Sydney has won 10 of its past 11 games against Port Adelaide. The Power’s only win since 2006 came in round 13, 2013 at Football Park when they won by 18 points. Last year in round 13 at the SCG, it was third versus first with Port two games and a small percentage clear on top of the ladder. But the Swans won a see-sawing thriller by four points with five goals from Lance Franklin and three from Adam Goodes. It sparked a mid-season slide that saw the Power lose six of eight matches. Also in that run of losses was their second meeting of the season, in round 20 at Adelaide Oval when the Swans won by 26 points, 12.12 (84) to 7.16 (58), with three goals from Harry Cunningham and Ben McGlynn. Overall, Sydney leads 17 wins to seven. The Swans have won five of their past six against Port in Adelaide.PORT ADELAIDE: $1.75 SYDNEY: $2.08

GWS GIANTS V MELBOURNESaturday 1.40pm, StarTrack Oval

Melbourne won its first three games against GWS but the Giants have won the past three. Their last clash saw the Giants win conclusively by 64 points, 15.8 (98) to 3.16 (34), with four goals from Rhys Palmer. The Giants scored 13.7 to 1.12 after quarter-time, despite finishing with only one fit man on the bench. The home side was booed off the ground after its most insipid performance of the season. It was the Giants’ first win in Victoria and at the MCG. Strangely, the smallest margin in six games between these sides has been 25 points. The goals’ record in this fixture belongs to Setanta O’Hailpin who kicked five for the Giants in 2013. This game is at Manuka Oval in Canberra where their only previous clash saw the Demons win by that 25-point margin in 2012.GWS GIANTS: $1.40 MELBOURNE: $2.95

Hawthorn has won its past five games in a row against Essendon, one win shy of its record streak of six wins from 2005-08 and 1987-89. However, its run nearly came unstuck when they last met in round two last year at Etihad. The Hawks looked comfortable at half-time leading by 32 points, 9.3 to 3.7, but the Bombers piled on six goals without reply in the third term to take a three-point lead into the last change. The Bombers looked certain winners for most of the last term, three times goaling to extend their lead beyond a straight kick. Then at the 25-minute mark with the Hawks still trailing by nine points, Luke Breust struck to cut the margin to three before Cyril Rioli mugged the Dons with a 29th-minute winner. This is their first meeting at the MCG since 2011 where Essendon leads 14 wins to 10.ESSENDON: $4.10 HAWTHORN: $1.24

NORTH MELBOURNE V BRISBANE Sunday 4.10pm, Etihad Stadium

Brisbane has won two of its past three games against North Melbourne including a four-point win when the sides last met in round 15 last year at the Gabba. North led by 16 points at quarter-time before Brisbane piled on seven goals to one in the second term and maintained a 20-point lead through to three quarter-time. But the home side stopped to a walk as Andrew Swallow kicked the opening goal of the last term inside the first minute. Lindsay Thomas brought the Kangaroos to within five points at the 23-minute mark and Ryan Bastinac had a long range shot which bounced through for a behind after 32 minutes. The Roos finished with 3.3 to 0.5 for the quarter but fell four points short. North leads 6-4 with one draw at Etihad Stadium but the Roos have won the last five there since Brisbane’s last win there in 2009.North Melbourne: $1.20 Brisbane: $4.50


CENTRAL DISTRICT V NORWOOD Saturday 2.10pm, Playford Alive Oval RADIO: Life FM

The two most recent dynasties in SANFL square off in the concluding match of Round Two, with the home team kicking off its season. Missing the finals last year burns deep in the collective psyche of the playing group and coach Roy Laird, who has been encouraged by the early signs of the recruits in the trials. Norwood looked to have Sturt under control for much of last week. It still had some nervous moments, particularly with the Double Blues breaking into attack a number of times without being rewarded. Coach Ben Warren would have noted how well they made space across the top of the forward 50 and will be mindful of closing down the room to move.

While the Redlegs have dominanted games recently between the clubs they will be mindful of the corresponding match in this round in 2014 when Central wound them in quickly after a wasteful opening term by Norwood. Maximising the counterattack from defence will be a major key. Finishing will be high on the agenda after winning last week despite less scoring shots. The Bulldogs’ start to the season will be crucial to avenging 2014. While there has been plenty of experience leave the kennel in the off-season, it hands an opportunity to some hungry youngsters who want their own slice of history. Tempting to pick the locals, but overall form leans to Norwood.TIP: Norwood 13-24

WOODVILLE/W.TORRENS V WEST ADELAIDE Saturday 2.10pm, Maughan Thiem Hyundai Oval RADIO: 5RPH

Mutual expectations of finals for the Eagles and West Adelaide, with the knowledge that the opening rounds could set the tone for their seasons.

Leg speed has been an area of concern for both teams for some time, so they will look to capitalise on their recruits to make an impression early in this regard. Some seasoned Eagles have had sporadic pre-seasons, with the likes of James Boyd in particular aiming to find his 2013 form. Their attack is still one of the most imposing in the competition, with Michael Wundke looking to raise the bar further after his Ken Farmer Medal season, working in tandem with Andrew Ainger. The challenge for the Bloods will be carrying their impressive form from last week’s trial against the Adelaide reserves into the season proper. The trip to Woodville has not been a happy one generally for West over the past five years. This appears set to continue.Tip: Woodville/West Torrens

STURT V GLENELG Saturday 1.10pm, Peter Motley Oval TV: Channel 7

Opening-round losers, but plenty to like about both teams despite the result.

While the start is often touted as the key to a game, that can be misleading with these teams. Glenelg has shown it can start quickly but fade, while the Double Blues can start slowly and then shift through the gears. The pace of the Tigers may prove a factor at times, as their outside run looks superior to Sturt’s but that will count for little if they cannot finish their efforts with a consistent attack. The ruck battle looks to clearly favour the home team, with the Angus’s, Kurtze and Bruggemann stretching Norwood last week both in the centre square and in the forward 50. Glenelg coach Matt Lokan will be wary of playing too defensively too early, as he will want his charges to take on the opposition and not simply aim to lock down games. All things considered, Sturt looks to hold the aces.Tip: Sturt 25-36

NORTH ADELAIDE V ADELAIDE RESERVES Saturday 1.10pm, Prospect Live streaming via www.sanfl.com.au

Big expectations at Prospect for 2015, with the feeling that the club underachieved last year after a solid recruiting campaign. Selective choices for this season include the returning Lewis Johnston who should straighten North’s attack which was inconsistent at time last season.

The Roosters cannot afford a slow start to the season, as they found last year that the late chase for a spot took its toll at the wrong end. They also need to find more options in the defensive half to take contested marks, as too much is left to Todd Miles to repel opposition attacks in the air. Their run when the ball hits the ground is good, but a few holes tend to open up under pressure. Adelaide’s structure can fluctuate from week to week, but if it can get its best lineup on the park, and top-up players slot in early and find their feet, it is capable of causing some upsets along the journey. At home, the Roosters appear to have the edge.TIP: North Adelaide 13-24

SOUTH ADELAIDE V PORT MAGPIES Friday 7.10pm, Hickinbotham Oval RADIO: 5RPH

The Panthers are aiming to win their opening two matches, after surviving a scare from Glenelg last week. After a 2014 where they looked one dimensional at times in attack, Ben Haren’s arrival from the Magpies was heralded with four goals, while Joel Cross and Brent Macleod were typically busy throughout in feeding off the clever ruckwork of Daniel Bass. A long pre-season for the Magpies should have them primed here for a big first up effort, particularly with a number of incoming players from the AFL arm keen to showcase their wares for higher honours.

The Magpies will be more difficult to line up from week to week, but the class of Anthony Biemans and skipper Steven Summerton should be complemented by the arrival of Luke Reynolds from Victoria. A slight doubt hangs over their regular attack, but this has all the hallmarks of a high scoring match that should just come in the Panthers favour in a major upset.TIP: South Adelaide 1-12

A delaide United was happy to come away with the points last week after a crucial

1-0 victory over Sydney FC, but the Reds’ performance showed improvement was needed to be a finals force.

They endured a persistent Sky Blues outfit, none more so than captain Eugene Galekovic in goal, but they will need to take a few steps to continue to push for a higher spot on the A-League ladder.

Other results saw Adelaide in third spot after last weekend’s round.

It is just one point behind Melbourne Victory and Perth Glory with three games remaining although Victory has a game in hand.

Galekovic was inspirational, keeping Sydney’s countless attacks at bay to confirm his position as the best goalkeeper in the competition. The side will not want to have to rely on him all the time to claim its first A-League title.

Desperation proved to be the desired component in the telling conditions, which were not conducive to coach Josep Gombau’s ‘tiki-taki’ style. It will be just as crucial come finals time.

“We know we didn’t play good football and we know we have to get better if we want to get more points, but it was a massive three points,” Galekovic said.

“But if we play that (type of) football in the finals, we know we won’t get very far.

“The good signs are our desperation and the way we defended. I think over the last two weeks we haven’t played good football, but we’ve done those things really well.”

Adelaide will look to claim a top-two spot when back at Coopers Stadium on Saturday to face Brisbane Roar, which kept its slim finals’ aspirations alive with a 6-1 drubbing of Central Coast Mariners last week.

The Reds catch the Roar at just the right time with Brisbane coming to Adelaide off a mid-week trip to South Korea to play Suwon Samsung FC in the AFC Champions League.

Fitness will play a key role when the Roar has to back up on Saturday, with the long trip possibly fatiguing the defending champion late in this clash.

It is something Adelaide can exploit with pace and quick ball movement while also ensuring Galekovic has less to do this week.

A ustralian amateur Antonio Murdaca is refusing to get overawed as he prepares

for his debut Masters – in fact is seeking out the famed Augusta roars.

In the field via his win in the Asia-Pacific Amateur Championship at Royal Melbourne last year, the 19 year-old sits as a 1000-1 shot to win a green jacket but rather than show nerves he has embraced his place.

Murdaca visited Augusta National earlier in the year to overcome any initial nerves but now, with thousands of patrons storming the grounds, it’s a different experience.

“My heart was pumping a little

bit quicker compared to my earlier practice rounds but it is a pretty cool vibe, I have never experienced something like this before,” he said.

“Just the vibe off the crowd gets you pumped up, it keeps your mind off bad shots and focused on hitting good ones because you can hear the roars and you kind of want to hear them some more.

If he can pull off a miracle, Murdaca will be the first amateur to win the Masters, and the first amateur major winner since 1933 when Johnny Goodman won the US Open.

A more realistic goal is keeping the Silver Cup as low amateur in Australian hands after Oliver Goss claimed it last year, the second ever Aussie behind Jim Ferrier in 1940.

To claim it he will need to make the cut and beat out Canadian Corey Conners, Chile’s Matias Dominguez, Scotland’s Neil Bradley, Korean Gunn Yang and

Americans Scott Harvey and Byron Meth.

Murdaca warmed up for the event with a comprehensive seven-shot victory in the South Australian Amateur Championship last month. He then joined 2013 Masters champion Adam Scott, who he has been paired with for the opening two rounds, in a practice hit-out.

“He’s not scared to be in front and when it gets going he doesn’t back off,” coach and caddie Gareth Jones said.

“He seems to thrive on the bigger occasions and it doesn’t get much bigger than this.”

General sportBrisbane’s second top-scorer Jean Carlos Solorzano, who was highly influential in his side’s compelling win over the Mariners, will have been rested during the week.

That was because of the international player restrictions in the Champions League. He will need to be contained by the Reds to prevent him from having an impact here.

Former Red Steven Lustica is another who will have to watch closely, following his hat-trick against Central Coast last week.

Key Brisbane playmaker Thomas Broich showed his class as well returning from an ankle injury to set up two of Lustica’s goals. The German will still be underdone for match fitness, but his prowess cannot be underestimated.

The absence of the Roar’s leading scorer Henrique, due to having a knee reconstruction last week, is one less worry off Gombau.

This could be the year for Prince Alfred OC to tear apart the Division 2 competition.

The Reds have been gradually on the rise over recent years, making the finals the past two seasons. It’s now time to impose themselves for higher achievements.

They were overwhelmed by Sacred Heart OC in the preliminary final last season, but the finals exposure should help them this year.

The addition of former Norwood premiership player Gavin Hughes as a playing assistant coach, will certainly add pace to the side as long as he can stay injury-free.

Coach Tom Martin is confident, too, that his side can match the best at this level.

Their biggest threat could be fellow ex-college outfit in Scotch OC which jumped up from Division 3 last year with little difficulty.

Its only failing was falling out of last year’s finals series in straight sets after finishing second at the end of the minor round.

The sides coming back from Division 1 are always the ones to watch as they look to quickly return to the top flight of the amateur league.

St Peters OC was the only Division 1 premier

three years before the other sides surpassed it last year and fell back to Division 2 this year. Gaza won the title four years ago and now it too finds itself demoted which shows just how ruthless the competition can be.

Trevor Hill is still at the helm of SPOC for another season and believes his side will bounce back with fitness on the players’ side after a strong pre-season.

The Eagles will be under the direction of former SAAFL State coach Bob Cross this season and his nous could achieve the quick turnaround the club desires.

Wayne Weidemann has had a few years to enforce his direction on the Broadview playing stock and will be looking for success now.

He has lost a couple of crucial players including Johnny Boras, Nick Read and Damien Thamm, but classy Rian Hornhardt returns.

Gepps Cross has been unable to find any semblance of the form that saw it competitive for several years in Division 1 since dropping down two years ago.

Paul James takes the reins in 2015 to improve the club’s fortunes, moving to Adelaide from Canberra where he coached Queanbeyan in

Year to toast the Reds the North Eastern Australian Football League.

A few name players have departed such as Josh Thurgood, Alex Stengle and Josh Wittwer so it may take awhile for James to settle into his new position.

Walkerville has also seen a number of players leave the club, including Braydn Fisher and Jason Barry. It will be a younger side this season, but still capable of creating havoc for opposition sides.

The loss of Justin Cicolella and Emmett Cashel are big omissions for SMOSH West Lakes which challenged for finals in its first season at this level, but couldn’t get it done in the finish.

The newcomers from Division 3, Unley Mercedes Jets and Modbury, will find the leap up tougher, but success breeds success, as they say, so they will be hoping finals are a distinct possibility.


Plenty of action in the off-season has seen a revamp of this year’s Division 3 competition with nine teams set to

battle. Last season’s Division 4 premier Golden Grove has won promotion, but Salisbury West, last season’s runners-up to the Grove, has dropped three divisions following the mass exodus of players.

Instead of finding another club to promote to join Golden Grove the league stayed with just the one club jumping a grade. Conversely PHOS Camden and Flinders Park are the demoted clubs from 2014. Both sides won six games last season and with two rounds to play in 2014 still had some chance of making the finals.

This week’s matches should provide some intriguing match-ups.

At Camden Oval, PHOS Camden takes on Seaton Ramblers. In recent years the clubs have been used to meeting in Division 1 or 2 but Division 3 is foreign ground.

The Phantoms will be coached by Simon

Quinn, while Matt Webber will call the shots for the Rams. Seaton was second at the end of the minor round last season but had another disappointing finals series. It will look to stand tall at the business end of the season.

Pembroke OS takes on Plympton at Haslam Oval in another tough match to assess. The Kings will be coached by Will ‘’Astro’’ James, while Simon Howard will guide the Bulldogs. Pembroke had a relatively good year in 2014 to finish fourth at the end of the minor round while Plympton was up and down to finish seventh. The home ground could be the difference for Pembroke this week.

Athelstone and Old Ignatians have enjoyed a keen rivalry for several seasons and this season looks no different. Former Sturt champ Jade Sheedy will lead the Raggies, while Jeremy Cini takes on Old Iggies. The sides were around the mark on the ladder last season with Raggies in sixth place and Old Iggies holding fifth. The match will be

Afull complement of teams will do battle for this year’s Division 4 title when action kicks off this Saturday.

Six clubs will stay in the division from 2014 while Westminster OS and North Haven jump from Division 5 and Salibsury and Kilburn drop out of Division 3.

Traditionally, this is a tough division to assess with several sides always in the running for the finals until the last minor round, this season looking no different.

Kilburn is the unknown quantity. Last season was horrendous for the club with no wins and many matches where it couldn’t field full sides in A and B grade, culminating in huge losses.

At Daly Oval, Hectorville will be aiming for a good start to the season when it hosts Eastern Park. The Hounds have been there or thereabouts in recent seasons, but last season’s seventh finish was disappointing. Phil Neagle will coach Hectorville this season. Its opponent this week, Eastern Park, has endured a rollercoaster few years with a stint in Division 1

and then a gradual fall from grace. Last season it finished third at the end of the Division 4 minor round and will be led by Scott McGee in the coach’s box. The Demons may just have the edge, even away from home.

Last season’s Division 5 grand finalists Westminster OS and North Haven should provide a keen tussle at Glandore Oval, Westminster’s home ground.

Led by former Glenelg player Paul Sherwood the Dragons may have enough in hand to outgun the Magpies in an interesting start to their seasons. North Haven will be coached by Andrew Lipson.

Hope Valley and Glenunga, both in Division 4 last season, meet at Hope Valley Oval. The Demons were fourth last season, while Glenunga just avoided relegation in eighth place. Michael Stevens has the coaching reins at Hope Valley, while Michael Annese is in charge of Glenunga.

Kenilworth and Pooraka could provide an even contest judging on 2014 results where

the Kookaburras finished sixth and Pooraka fifth. Kenilworth has a new look in the coaching box with former South Adelaide and Reynella premiership player Brendan McKeough in charge at St Marys Park. That could be a key to the game. Pooraka, which has been up and down in recent seasons, will be led by Leigh Crawford.

Salisbury and Kilburn provide possibly the toughest match to assess when they lock horns at Salisbury Oval. Both clubs had seasons to forget in 2014 and were in line for demotion reasonably early in the season. The clubs have not enjoyed good pre seasons for their assaults on Division 4 but will aim to rebuild and then consolidate. Stephen Couzner calls the shots at Salisbury while club star Matthew Whelan has the job of regrouping Kilburn.

Mitcham will look for a good start to the season when it meets Flinders Park at home. The Hawks, coached by club stalwart Adam West, finished eighth last season. Plenty of focus will be on Flinders Park, and in particular its new coach former Port Adelaide (Magpies), Adelaide and Essendon champ Greg Anderson. Anderson has had extensive coaching experience in the amateur league and will give Parks every chance to be there at the pointy end of the season.

It looks like a year of redemption for Colonel Light Gardens in Division 5 this season.

The southern Channel 9 Adelaide League side entered the 2014 finals series hoping for success, after finishing second on the ladder in the minor round, but lost the preliminary final to eventual premier Westminster OS.

It was all so close for the Bulldogs advancing two years in row after making the 2013 Division 6 grand final.

They maintained their ability well up a grade last year and will be looking to actually make that next step this season.

CLG will be coached by former AFL and SANFL player Matthew Dent.

Other sides from this level last year in CBCOC, Elizabeth, Adelaide Lutheran, Para Hills and Greenacres will similarly be hoping for improvement in 2015 to push for finals berths.

Woodville South drops back after one season up in Division 4 and will be pursuing a quick to the higher level.

The Cats will be coached by Ben Porter who most recently coached Edwardstown ing the Souther Football League.

Pulteney struggled in Division 4 last year and will not find it any easier down here so off-season recruiting will be the key their hopes of winning more games this season.

Blackfriars OS and Rosewater are two

Nine teams will chase bragging rights for the the Division 6 premiership.

With a juggling of teams Adelaide University will stay in Division 7 after earning the right for promotion but opting to stay down after finishing runners up to Smithfield last season. Brahma Lodge and Trinity OS are the two clubs dropping a division after finishing bottom and second bottom respectively in Division 5 last season.

Brahma Lodge kicks off its season at home under coach Shane Brown hoping to put the horror of last season behind it when it went winless from 18 rounds. The Tigers have enjoyed some success before that so a new season will bring fresh hope. Ingle Farm, coached by Paul Manuel, was third at the end of the minor round in Division 6 last season with 14 wins. The Bulldogs will be looking for a bright start to the year. Judging on last season’s effort it could be around the mark again.

Fitzroy and Mawson Lakes competed in Division 6 last season and will aim to build on their 2014 results with the Lions finishing fifth and Mawson Lakes a couple of positions away in seventh place.

Club stalwart Graham O’Brien will lead the Lions as coach, while David White is in charge at Mawson Lakes. The Lions, at home, could be tough to beat.

Lockleys takes on West Croydon at Lockleys in a western derby of sorts. The Demons finished sixth in Division 6 last season, while West Croydon enjoyed a solid minor round with 15 wins. It fell short in the finals, losing the preliminary final by nine points to Rosewater. Stephen Zweck is the man to guide Lockleys, while former star player Dallas Wiles takes the reins at West Croydon.

Central United, which finished eighth in Division 6 last season with eight wins, is home at Mofflin Reserve to Trinity OS.

Trinity finished ninth in Division 5 last season with four wins and a draw. Craig Harley will coach Central United, while Chris Eaton will call the shots from the box for Trinity OS.

Smithfield has the bye to start the season. The Panthers enjoyed an excellent season in Division 7, winning the premiership after being unbeaten for the season. It won its eighteen minor round games in good style. It then won both finals by 90 and 91 points against Houghton Districs and Adelaide Univeristy to cap off a stellar year. David Thompson leads the off-field charge for Smithfield this season.

clubs that can have an immediate impact in this competition.

Rosewater had been around the mark for a few seasons back in Division 6 before earning the right to rise last year while the Hounds finals series, coming from fourth to take out the premiership, shows that they can mix it with the best.

Both will give a few sides a fright throughout the year and could be really staking a claim for higher honours in the latter part of the season.

It certainly looms as a tight division in the amateur league this year with no favours given and every game proving crucial to future prospects.

Leading trainer David Hayes is getting excited about the chances of Criterion

in Saturday’s Group One Queen Elizabeth Stakes (2000m) at Randwick.

Hayes is buoyant that the 2000m of the $4m weight-for-age feature on the second day of ‘The Championships’ will suit Criterion perfectly at this stage of his campaign and doesn’t believe another wet track at Randwick will dampen his chances.

“I think he is up to his best trip, the track will be perfect for him and I am starting to get excited about his prospects,” Hayes said.

Criterion was a little tardy away in George Ryder Stakes last start, but ran home well to finish second to Real Impact.

Criterion was one of the stars of the Sydney Autumn Carnival last year with wins in the Group 1 $500,000 TAB.com.au Rosehill Guineas (2000m) at Rosehill on a soft tack and the Group 1 $2m BMW Australian Derby (2400m) at Randwick on a heavy track.

Four-time Melbourne Cup runner-up Red Cadeaux will make his Sydney debut in the Queen Elizabeth Stakes rather than the Sydney Cup.

“The weather has been the overriding factor in our decision, with Sydney having experienced an extremely wet week,” trainer Ed Dunlop said.

He said the prospect of rain-affected ground “would put a question mark against Red’s stamina over two miles”.

“Obviously Contributer and Adelaide will be tough to beat, but the Sydney Cup is a vintage renewal in itself with Protectionist, Who Shot Thebarman and the well-weighted Hartnell in the line-up,” Dunlop said.

“Hopefully we have made the right call.”

Red Cadeaux finished a solid fifth behind Spillway in his only start of 2015 in the Group I Australian Cup (2000m) at Flemington on March 14 and is a $51 chance in Saturday’s Queen Elizabeth Stakes.
