Cell phone safety – Ngā tikanga marutau mō te waea pūkoro
The values of our school are and start with M – Manaakitanga and it is the most
important value that features in all areas of our lives, school, home, whānau, work, and friends. In this
newsletter we are looking at how we respect our rules on cell phone use while at school.
A recent study found that banning mobile phones at schools improved student performance, this being
most beneficial for struggling students. Here are 6 reasons to put your phone away-
1. Lowers concentration – Excessive mobile phone use, leads to poor concentration.
2. FoMO– Adolescents often have FoMO (Fear of Missing out). This is made worse with mobile phones,
driving the compulsive need to know what others are doing.
3. Reduces memory – Phone messages and notifications are distracting and disrupt tasks, such as
studying, causing goals or the tasks to be forgotten.
4. Warps view on reality – Social media presents a distorted view on the real world. Stress and Anxiety –
Constant over-use of mobile phones leads to increased anxiety, feelings of loneliness, and low self-
esteem.
5. Sleep inability – Phone use every day and for longer than 20 minutes at a time will lead to poor sleep quality and duration. The
glow from the screen can also cause issues with actually getting to sleep, not letting your brain unwind and prepare for sleep.
Here is a way for you and your student to check if you are addicted - http://virtual-addiction.com/smartphone-compulsion-test/
It even has a name: nomophobia – “the disease of the 21st century”, is the irrational fear
of having no access to mobile technology, being without a cell phone.
A disorder suffered by half of the population. It occurs due to the irrational dependence
on these devices, that generates a feeling of anxiety in the user, feeling cut off from the
outside world.
Please help us to monitor student use of cell phones by limiting their use and unless
absolutely necessary we suggest students leave them at home. Encourage them to go
outside and play sport, sing, dance, do Kapa haka, mix with friends- without their cell
phone.
Basketball Two members of the Tarawera
Junior Basketball team, Jason
Aramoana and Piripi Te Riini, both
received All Star Players awards
for their skill in this sport. They were
chosen for their attitude and
amazing energy, pacing up and
down the court and never giving
up. They improved week to week
and picked up rapidly with their
natural ability and athleticism. The
All star players award is to
recognise the top players in each
age group. Six players are chosen
from each age group, which is
about 70 students and 2 of them
came from Tarawera High
School. The schools Junior
Basketball Team placed fourth in
the EBOP Secondary school
competition and we thank
Coach Jordaan Tuitama for the
great job he did with the team.
Rugby Each rugby player from Tarawera High School has received a
rugby ball from the “Ball for All” project, up to 12000 rugby balls
going to junior and school players who have registered to play.
Thank you to the following sponsors Putauāki Trust, Aquaheat

Basketball The new basketball court and hoops were officially opened
last Thursday. The local police were invited to play against the
staff and students who were eager to show off their fancy
moves on the court. The students were too strong for the
police, while in the second match with the police Vs staff, the
police went away with a convincing win. It was a great
atmosphere with a lot of laughter and cheering on the
sidelines.

Daffodil Tarawera High School students and staff have enjoyed the
range of Daffodil Day awareness activities this week. We have
had a very successful colouring competition, a "yellow
morning tea", a lot of fun with temporary tattoos and had a
group of students assisting the Kawerau Rotary Club to collect
donations in town. The most popular activity has been the
purchasing of fresh daffodils. Students were able to purchase
a daffodil for themselves or to send to a friend. These were
delivered by the prefects this afternoon. Thank you to
everyone that participated and donated to this very worthy
cause.
