A SOCIAL RESPONSIBILITY
INITIATIVE OF THE INDIAN SPORTS GOODS INDUSTRY
“CHILD LABOUR AND BEYOND”
www.sgfi.org
2
To have aMonitoring System in place to ensure
Prevention & Rehabilitation of child labour in Sports Industry.
25 Sports Goods Manufacturers in 1998 voluntarily decided
Since individually it can become difficult to think of social & environmental responsibilities, we first of all created an awareness amongst the members about the need of looking into all these things.
Then, when we accepted the facts and we were convinced that YES we must do something, we started brainstorming, what all can be done, what can be our contribution in our community, in our prevailing conditions, keeping in mind the general acceptance.
This is how we embarked upon the journey of social responsibility.
As we moved forward, we found, how difficult it is to facilitate changes in community attitude. How difficult it is to tell them the value of education, to tell them the meanings of good health, to tell them the meanings of cleanliness, the meanings of cooperation, the meaning of helping each other & so many similar grass root level things & for this we had to become humane first & then factory owners.
And we started organizing self help groups, health related programs, education related programs, helping the needy in one way or the other.
Message from the SGFI Chairman, Mr. Satish Wasan
VisionOver time, with experience & learnings, SGFI realised there
were many more issues that needed to be addressed.1. SGFI has now followed a PPCP approach.
• Public: SGFI involved the government & are now running 8 special NCLP schools.
• Private: involvement of the sports goods industry.
• Community: involvement of the local villages, community leaders, religious organizations, schools etc.
• Partnership: SGFI has partnered with local NGOs.2. MENTOR NGO: SGFI has become a mentor NGO for other organizations.
To foster and energize social responsibility initiatives of
Indian Sports Goods Industry.
OBJECTIVES
1. Prevention and rehabilitation of child labour in the Industry.2. Continue the monitoring process.3. Social security, health insurance and alternate means of income to home
based workers by:-A. Organizing them in to Self Help Groups (SHG).B. Skill mapping of individual SHG.
4. Life Insurance for home based workers through LIC – Jeevan Madhur Scheme.
5. Education for children.1. Primary school education.2. Personality Development Centres.
6. Health.1. Conduct awareness and check up medical camps for factory and home based
workers.2. Conduct check up medical camps at our 30 tuition centres and 8 schools under
National Child Labour Project (NCLP).7. Reach: Collection and distribution of items to the needy.
For attaining all this we applied best practices at our own sites first of all.Developed a close cooperation with all member companies & partners.
We showed by doing and not suggesting.
We actually went to the field, we saw, we experienced, we realized and we started the marathon. It is an ongoing process, results are good, we feel encouraged and the exciting results of all this exercise is that when we do good, we want to do better.
