Alumni News

A Few Words…

June 2017

The 2017 Fischbone Society Meeting will take place in Traverse City, MI in August, at the Grand

Traverse Resort and Spa. This year marks the 30th anniversary of the Fellowship, as our first

fellow, Dr. David Burstein started in 1987. Celebrating 30 years of education will be the theme of

this year’s reunion. We have put together an amazing group of guests!

Lanny Johnson, MD will deliver the “What’s Really Important” address and participate in the

academic program.

Marc Safran, MD will be our first Presidential Guest and will be presenting on hip arthroscopy.

Judy Saewert, first Fellowship Coordinator, Bob Finke, Shelly Perpich-Koland, Hollis Fritts, MD,

David Fischer, MD, Sheldon Burns, MD and various early Fellows will be our panelists in the

“Fellowship Program: 30 Year Anniversary Symposium”. Lots of stories and anecdotes to share!

Our host families, Peter and Beth McAndrews, Matthew and Elani Sardelli, John and Miriam Samani

and Andrew and Beth Schorfhaar would like to warmly welcome all Society members to beautiful

Happy summer to all.

As there was great excitement and positive feedback to the creation of Chalk Talk, the TRIA Orthopaedic Sports

Medicine Fellowship Program is proud to publish the second issue. This newsletter is a wonderful communication

tool and I hope everybody enjoys the reading!!

As we approach the end of another academic year, it is always nice to reflect on our experiences throughout the

year. We have had the pleasure of educating and getting to know our current fellowship class throughout the

year. Chalk Talk, Issue 2 highlights some of the ‘experiences’ of Drs. Harris, Haskins, and Urband. We, of course,

have high hopes and expectations of them and are looking forward to following their careers (and most

importantly, ‘initiating’ them into the Fischbone Society). Additionally, the Fellowship Program has also

welcomed two more faculty members to the family, Dr. Jeffrey A. Macalena and Dr. Alicia K. Harrison. We are

looking forward to their additions to the teaching faculty.

Finally, I hope that all are considering participating in the 2017 Fischbone Society Meeting in Traverse City next

month. Dr. Fischer and Maia have put together a great program and it looks to the best alumni event ever!! I

look forward to seeing you there.

10 Things You Don’t Know About Me

I set the alarm early enough every day so there is time to make coffee for

my wife and bring it to her in bed along with the paper and her favorite

breakfast: Cheerios and a banana.

One of the best things I have ever done is arrange arthroscopic equipment

to go to Latvia with Dr. Juris Matisons from the University of Riga, who

otherwise probably would have never gotten his own equipment.

I also think that this is my dream job. Being an orthopeadic surgeon and a

team physician is all I ever wanted to achieve professionally.

One thing I will never do again is a business deal without legal backing.

Unfortunately, a hand shake is not trustworthy anymore.

My hero is Dr. Edwin D. (Ned) Bayrd, a Hematologist at Mayo who took

care of my mother’s Hodgkin’s disease years ago. He was amazing at not

only caring for his patients, but also their family members. He made an

impact on me and my family and he is the reason why I went into

medicine.

I have 2 favorite movies: Gladiator, with Russell Crowe and Braveheart with

Mel Gibson.

My favorite place to be is at the family lake cabin in Northern MN, on

Whitefish Lake.

One thing I would like to do is go back to stain glass work. I learned it in

medical school and have not done it in years.

One thing I really do not like is the digital age we live in. It seems like

human conversations are disappearing. We spend too much time looking

at a screen of some sort.

If I could buy anything I wanted, or were granted one material wish, I

would own a private jet and travel the world, whenever I wanted to.

Where Are They Now…?

Richard M. Linn, MD-Class of 1989-1990

Dr. Linn attended medical school at the University of New York and completed his residency at Washington

University in St. Louis. Currently, Dr. Linn works at The Orthopedic Center of South Florida, near Fort Lauderdale,

together with 15 other physicians. They are the largest independent orthopaedic group in the area!

Dr. Linn has been married to Cori for 25 years. They have two children, Matt and Cooper. Matt is 23 years old and

graduated from Brown last fall and is now working for Wayfair in Boston. Cooper is 21 years old and is a junior at

Emory majoring in Physics and Astronomy, hoping to work in the aerospace industry after graduation. And there is

Maggie too, their 6 year old rescue mutt, who Dr. Linn says is always happiest to see him! When he is not working,

Dr. Linn and his family enjoy traveling and spending time together when they can. 2016 was a year filled with

adventure for the Linn family. They went skiing in Breckenridge, relaxed in Cabo San Lucas, hiked in Oregon, went

on an RV trip to Rangell St. Elias National Park and Valdez in Alaska, and visited Japan for their 25th wedding

anniversary.

Dr. Linn says that fellowship was probably the best year of his career because he learned how to treat the patient as opposed to their condition or injury. He

remembers Dr. Fischer always saying “Well, I think we can help you with that…” which is a line that Dr. Linn uses multiple times a day in his practice. Dr. Linn also

appreciates Dr. Fischer’s trust in him when he was a fellow, as well as his high expectations. Dr. Linn thinks that because of this combination, he has become (as he

calls himself) “a pretty decent arthroscopic surgeon to date”.

Saying Goodbye…

As I enter my fourth year as the Fellowship Coordinator for the TRIA Orthopaedic Center Sports Medicine Program, and I prepare to say goodbye to the 2016-2017 class, I must confess that this is the hardest time of the academic year for me. Not because June and July are the busiest months of the year (they really are!), but because I struggle with letting go, under-standing that everything must come to an end, and remembering change is good. It is like when you are a kid, and your parents bring you to a party full of other kids that you have never met before. At

first you feel awkward, foreign, and you want to leave right away. But as the hours go by you start warming up and having fun. You hate it when your parents come back to pick you up. It is the same with a fellowship year for me: at first I am nervous, trying to get to know the new Fellows and make sure they get to know me too. But as the months go by, and we all get to know to each other, create our own memories, and truly start a friendship, I REALLY do not want it to end, I do not want them to go… and this year is no different. “This is a good thing!” I tell myself often. “This what they have been waiting for, for nearly 10 years!” I repeat over and over in my head. I realize this sure is a huge milestone for the Fellows and I got to be part of it! So, I woke up today and I decided to start seeing this moment in a different way. Although it is the hardest time of the year for me, it is the best time of the year for the Fellows, who are about to start the rest of their lives. Scott, John and Chris: I thank you for a great year and all you have done for TRIA, our patients, and the community. Thank you for working with me on all the different ‘must get done’ Program requirements. Thanks for your friendship, your trust, and your respect. Thank you for your sense of humor, warmth, and silliness. And most of all, thank you for your everyday smiles and words of encouragement, which have helped me get only better at my job. I celebrate each one of you and I wish nothing but the best to you and your families. Stay in touch and do not forget me! XOXO, Maia.
