Nominations Needed for Sports Hall of Fame MCKENZIE (February 4) Dur- ing a telephone interview with The McKenzie Banner, Kenny Carr, father of former McKenzie Rebel and UTM football great Derek Carr, said that his son has accepted an invitation from the Canadian Football League team The Toronto Argonauts to try-out in Murfreesboro. Carr said, “The invitation to try-out for the Argonauts come through about the same time that Derek was named the Tennessee Sportswriter Association’s Player of the Year. My wife Jackie and I originally thought that the try- out had come about through his agent, but that was not the case. Apparently, Derek’s success at UTM sparked the invitation from the Argonauts.” He added, “Derek is currently preparing for whatever comes next. He knows that he has been blessed from the Lord and wants to pursue football at the next level. When opportunities like this come about, you just have to be ready for them and step out there and give it your best.” He concluded, “Derek had a good game during the Football Championship Subdivision Se- nior Scout Bowl at Myrtle Beach, South Carolina on December 15 (15 of 30 pass attempts, 162 yards), and that probably helped swing some professional scout attention his way.” During his collegiate careeer at UTM, the 6’1” senior from McK- enzie threw for 3,276 yards and 31 touchdowns. He posted a comple- tion percentage of 63.6-percent (264 of 415) while throwing only eight interceptions. A second-team All-OVC selec- tion, Carr guided the Skyhawks to an 8-3 overall record and 6-2 conference record. He was named College Sports Madness National Player of the Week and the adidas OVC Player of the Week for becoming the first player in Division I history to throw for seven touchdowns in a single game. During the 49-47 win over Jacksonville State, Carr became UTM’s all-time leader in total offense (7,767) and moved into third place in OVC history for touchdown passes (62) via 28 of 43 passing for 402 yards. During UTM’s 66-59 shoot-out win over Murray State, Carr completed a staggering 42 of 46 passes (91.3-percent) for 560 yards (UTM single-game record) and seven touchdowns to earn College Sporting News National All-Star accolades. Mason said the program’s air times are as follows: Satur- day, February 12 at 12:30 p.m.; Wednesday, February 16 at 3:00 p.m.,and Thursday, February 17 at 8:00 a.m. He said, “Last fall, Carroll County, Bethel University and the Town of Huntingdon col- laborated to get the Outdoor Channel to come to the new lake and film Bethel’s Bass fishing there. I am very excited about the program airing nationally. I believe that this type of publicity will definitely benefit the new lake, Bethel’s fishing program, and tourism for Carroll County.” He added, “The new lake is well-stocked and laid-out for fish- ing as well as any man-made lake I’ve ever seen.
