• Sports are an important part of Spain.• They play Futbol (soccer), Basketball, Tennis, Cycling,

Handball, Water Sports, Golf, and Formula One.

• Futbol, known as Soccer to us, is Spain’s most popular sport.

• Spanish teams play in the La Liga League which is arguably the toughest competition in the world. Teams include FC Barcelona, Valencia, and Real Madrid.

• Every year all teams from Spain compete in the Copa Del Rey tournament. Real Madrid has won the cup a record 8 times, their most recent coming in 2010 where they beat rival FC Barcelona.

• Some of Spain’s best Futbol players are Lionel Messi, Xavi, and Christiano Ronaldo.

• In 2010, Spain won the FIFA World Cup in South Africa.

• Spanish basketball teams compete in the Liga ABC, and compete in the FIBA world championships

• Some of their best teams are Real Madrid and FCB Regal.• Some of the NBA’s best are from Spain including Ricky

Rubio, and Pau Gasol.• In 2011. Spain lost to Team USA in the FIBA finals in

Turkey.

• Spain tennis players compete in the Fed Cup, and on the WTA circuit.

• Rafael Nadal has won 10 Grand Slam titles (winning the Australian Open, French Open, Wimbledon, or the U.S. Open), second most ever.

• Nadal is ranked #2 in the world, and David Ferrer is ranked at #4.

• Spanish tennis players have combined 115 titles since 1985.

• Spanish cyclers compete in only three events, the Tour de France, the Tour of Spain, and the Tour of Italy.

• Current Spanish cyclists include Alberto Contador, who won the Tour de France last year, and Carlos Sastre.

• The Tour of Spain is the second oldest cycling event in the world.

• Handball is a sport where two teams try to throw a ball into each other goal but you have to pass. If you have the ball you cannot walk or run.

• Spain competes in the IHF.• Spain is ranked 9th in the world with 563 ranking points

(Spain earns points by how well their teams compete in IHF tournaments).

• Spain got 3rd in 2011 and 1st in the 2008 Olympics.

• Spain competes in water skiing, jet-skiing, windsurfing, swimming, sailing, rowing, canoeing, kayaking, surfing, tubing, and water polo events.

• In water polo, Spain won silver in the 2009 FINA championships in Rome.

• In swimming, swimmer Genna Mengual won silver in the 2008 Olympics.

• Formula One is a racing league similar to NASCAR, but the cars are shaped similar to drag cars.

• Formula One has 20 races going from March to November• Fernando Alonso finished the season in 4th place with 257

points• Valencia hosts one race in Formula One
