    S P O R T 2012ATHLETICS PROFILEGEORGIA BLACK

It is evident you have vastly improved over the 2011/2012

track season. What has your improvement come down to? -I believe my improvement has come down to controlling my

health. Especially iron levels and mentally pushing myself toexceed. Last year I had breathing difficulties and little energy butthanks to medical specialists I have sorted these out and it seems

to be helping me and my running.

What are your goals going into the North Island Secondary

School Champs?- Having the triathlon national Champs a few days before thechampionships obviously I want to insure I am recovered and

ready to run as best I can. I would like to achieve Personal Bestsin both the 3000m and the 1500m, placing would be great but itcomes down to the day.

What are your goals in relation to being Cross Country cap-

tain?Being cross country captain is a great privilege, this year I hopeto get the team back to former glory. I would like to encourage

younger runners to ensure when I leave cross country is a suc-cessful sport. Another thing I would like to achieve is gettingnumbers up in runners in both boys and girls to ensure we havegood/strong teams at various events.

What are your career aspirations beyond school, or perhaps

university? Will you continue running?-At the moment if my running continues to improve I would like

to possibly go to America on a scholarship to run and study. Atthe moment I am in contact with Villanova based in Philadelphiaso we will just see what happens there. Otherwise I would like togo to Wellington to study law at Vic, I would in Wellingtoncontinue to run for a club.

What is your favourite athletics event, for what reasons?-Thats a hard question, the shorter are always over much faster, where as the longer you dont have to heavily rely on your start.3000m at the moment seems to be my speciality and getting therecord was a surprise. So 3000m is definitely a contender to be afavourite. Its all about pacing yourself and self belief. The top

two inches as Im always told.

Do you have a special training diet? Or any special routines? -I dont bother about what I eat, as I believe younger peopleshouldnt become over indulged in the sport until a higher elite

level is reached. This is to ensure you dont get bored/ unenthu-siastic about sporting field. My di et however does include lots offruit and vegetables A special routine I usually have is havingmarmite and toast for breakfast, pre race, and I always ensure I

do a good warm up and warm down.

Do you have any tips to share with younger athletes or those

considering doing athletics in the school? -Although you may not be the best at the start, with hard work, self belief and determination you can reach your goals at the end.

We had two Softball teams down in Palm-

    erston playing

Track and Field athletes at the NISS

    Champs in Tauranga.

Netball trials have been held this week, which

is always a busy few days at Springvale

Stadium. The Basketball teams have all beennamed and are training hard. The 1 st VX

rugby team have had two preseason games

and head to Christchurch for a tournament.

The Football & Hockey teams have also been

training hard, so bring on the cold, wet muddy

    practices.

Term two kicks off with the school Cross Coun-

we are trialling a new course out at

    Scoutlands.

Five days later sees the first big Sports

Exchange that the school has participated in

for many years. We head to New Plymouth totake on both the Boys and Girls High Schools.

The winter sports fields, grounds and courtswill again be busy, so if are keen to help with

managing teams and coaching give me a call

    at school.

    Good luck for the season!
