Monkey Business
A colony of monkeys has lived for about 70 years inurban South Florida, near jets taking off from a nearbyairport and fuel storage tanks. No one was quite surewhere they came from. Until now. Researchers atFlorida Atlantic University say they have traced thecolony’s origins to the Dania Chimpanzee Farm. It wasreported recently that there was a monkey escape fromthe farm in 1948, with most of the monkeys recaptured. But not all of them. The rest disappeared into amangrove swamp, where their descendants live today. The FAU team said the colony currently numbers about41. The FAU researchers traced the monkeys’ geneticsand concluded they were brought to Florida from Africa. The monkeys were sold mainly for medical and militaryresearch. One thing is certain: Residents of the DaniaBeach area where the monkeys live are extremelyprotective of them. “The community still loves them,”said Deborah “Missy” Williams, lead author of thestudy, who is in the FAU Biological SciencesDepartment. “They care for them. They want themprotected.” Williams has founded the Dania BeachVervet Project to protect them and is trying to raisemoney to buy land to serve as a sanctuary.
Every Step Counts
For fitness enthusiasts who constantly count their steps,a new study has good news for those who always findtime to squeeze in a few more each day. It turns outtaking more steps per day can help you live longer. Moreover, researchers say it doesn’t matter if you takethem all at once or in short spurts, just getting thosesteps in can lower the risk of premature death. Thestudy, involving more than 16,000 women over the ageof 60, also suggests that 4,500 steps per day is enoughto help extend the human lifespan. In comparison totaking no steps at all, researchers find each additional1,000 steps contributes to a 28 percent decrease indeath among study participants. Study authors askedparticipants to wear a step-counting device to measureactivity over four to seven days. The devices kept trackof everything from long walks outside to short spurtswhile climbing stairs. Women who took more than2,000 steps daily in uninterrupted bouts displayed a 32percent decrease in risk of death. A prior analysis ofthe same women also discovered that those who took4,500 steps per day had a significantly lower risk ofdeath in comparison to the least active women.“Technological advances made in recent decades haveallowed researchers to measure short spurts of activity.Whereas, in the past we were limited to only measuringactivities people could recall on a questionnaire,” saysstudy leader Christopher Moore, a PhD student inepidemiology at the University of North Carolina, in amedia release. “Older adults face many barriers toparticipating in structured exercise programs, so somemay find it more convenient and enjoyable to increaseeveryday walking behaviors, like parking slightly furtherfrom their destination or doing some extra houseworkor yardwork,” Moore adds. According to the MayoClinic, the average American takes between 3,000 and4,000 steps each day. That’s the equivalent of roughlytwo miles of walking. While that may sound like a lot, some experts place the goal for peak fitness at around10,000 steps daily.
Bantamweight Fight Set
The UFC is targeting a new date of July 24 for abantamweight fight between former champion TJDillashaw and Cory Sandhagen, multiple sources toldESPN, confirming an MMA Junkie report. Contractshave not been signed, but the UFC is working onfinalizing the 135-pound contest. Once official, it willheadline a UFC Fight Night at a location to beannounced. The fight was originally scheduled to takeplace on May 8, but Dillashaw, 35, suffered a cut nearhis eyebrow during training and was forced topostpone. Dillashaw (16-4) has not fought since hewas knocked out in the first round of a flyweightchampionship fight against Henry Cejudo in January2019. The California native was then suspended bythe United States Anti-Doping Agency for two yearsafter testing positive for EPO (erythropoietin). He wasforced to relinquish his 135-pound title at the time ofhis suspension. Sandhagen (14-2) is one of the mostpromising contenders at 135 pounds. He is 7-1 in theUFC overall.

A co-worker stinks
Are those moldy socks? Has someone left theirsandwich on their desk before going off on vacation? Is there a boy’s gym class working out in the nextroom? No, it’s Ralph in the adjoining cubicle! If yourco-worker is stinking up the joint, then hold your noseand let him or her know with this allegorical tale:Mitchy had a problem with body odour, so he went tosee his doctor.“Do you wash?” the doctor asked him.“Of course,” Mitchy replied. “Every single morning Ibegin at my head and wash down as far as possible. Then, I begin at my feet and wash up as far aspossible.”“Well,” the doctor told him, “I suggest you go homeand wash possible.”
