Friday, November 12th

Sport NB Sport Summit

1:30 – 3:00 pm Planning for future success : an analysis of New Brunswick’s Sport Performance

This discussion will present information collected in a study of the 2009 Canada Games coaches which identified the shortcomings and successes of Team NB at the 2009 Canada Summer Games, It is based on a questionnaire and interview survey with the head coaches and associate coaches of each team representing New Brunswick at the Games. The results showed that there are obvious gaps in the NB sport system especially in the areas of athlete development, coach support, and setting measurable goals while competing at the Canada Games. Based on these findings and observations, recommendations were developed to make those teams competing at the Canada Games more competitive.

3:15 – 4:45 pm Athletics New Brunswick’s journey into integration of athletes with a disability

Athletics New Brunswick (ANB) has aggressively been developing Athletics (also known as track and field) for athletes with a disability (AWAD). Our objective is to gives athletes with disabilities the opportunity to compete in the sport of athletics for physical well being, socialization and at provincial, national, or the international level. Athletics being the Paralympics sport that includes the most types of disabilities, ANB welcomes people with all types’ disabilities such as visual, cerebral palsy, paraplegia, multiple sclerosis, amputation, cystic fibrosis and many others. Whether athletes are ambulatory or use a wheelchair, they can participate in many of the events offered in track and field. In New Brunswick alone we now have over 13 athletes with disabilities competing in Athletics (for the last 20 years we only had one.) 7:00 pm Keynote Address – How is this disabled? This talk will take the audience through various examples of so-called “disabled sport” with an objective of having the audience conclude that what we are really talking about is simply “sport”. Through the use of video and photos the audience will be exposed to a variety of these “disabled” sports and hopefully conclude that really we are just talking about “sports” – no qualifiers needed! The second part of the talk will focus more on the benefits of integration and will discuss integration paying particular attention to the future of sports for athletes with disabilities and how we are at a crossroads where PSO’s and MSO’s need to take a leadership role in aiming for inclusive sport or the sports system itself will never change.

Sport NB Sport Summit 9:00 - 10:30 am Scared of Wheels? This presentation will focus on the seemingly omnipresent fear of disability found in the “regular” sport system. A brief history of “disabled” sport will be used as a backdrop to posing the question of where “disabled” sport should be in the 21st Century. This presentation will highlight the absence of mandated inclusion policies and the effect that has had on the development (or lack of development) of “disabled” sport. Finally some concrete (and cheap!) ways to promote inclusion within your PSO will be discussed

recent achievements and future directions.

1:30 – 2:15 pm Official Languages Program (NEW!) Provincial sport organizations must be able to provide their memberships with services in both

official languages. This requires a commitment and willingness by every organization to

implement English and French in their day-to-day operations and to ensure continuity over the

long term. Learn what resources are available to help your organization move towards bilingual

service provision.

2:30-3:30 pm Sport Plan for New Brunswick – Year 3 Report Card A report on the state of sport in New Brunswick. What progress has been made towards achieving

New Brunswick’s sport plan goals?

There is no registration fee to attend the Sport and Recreation Branch Symposium. Pre-

registration is requested through Sport New Brunswick’s “Sport Summit” registration procedure.

Delegates planning to attend the Symposium are encouraged to take advantage of the entire Sport

Leadership Summit and the Pitney Bowes Sport Awards while in Dieppe.

Provincial organizations will be eligible for reimbursement of a portion of their travel expenses

incurred to send representatives to the symposium.
