Teachers’ notes

Introduction The Cell phone tutorial will introduce students to the skills and techniques needed to develop design ideas within Pro/ENGINEER Wildfire 3.0. This should be considered as an introductory tutorial exploring the Pro/ENGINEER interface and basic software operations.

Pre-requisites Pro/ENGINEER Wildfire 3.0 Schools Edition or Pro/ENGINEER Wildfire 3.0 Schools Advanced Edition or Pro/ENGINEER Wildfire 3.0 University Plus Edition or Pro/ENGINEER Wildfire 3.0 Student Edition This tutorial contains screen and menu images taken from the Schools Edition so users of other Pro/ENGINEER editions may notice some slight differences. This tutorial has also been based on the use of Pro/ENGINEER start parts & templates. While this tutorial can be used with other Pro/ENGINEER start parts there may be changes required in terms of view orientation, datum plane and coordinate system references etc. This tutorial requires no previous modeling experience in Pro/ENGINEER; however the User should be able to navigate the Pro/ENGINEER Wildfire User Interface. Pro/ENGINEER Wildfire requires the use of a 3 button mouse. If possible a mouse with a combined middle wheel & button can improve User interaction with Pro/ENGINEER Wildfire.

Background: Getting Started The goal of this tutorial is to introduce the student to the Pro/ENGINEER Wildfire 3.0 user interface and to acquaint them with some of the basic operations within the program. This graphic shows the basic interface and indicates the main components of the interface. This is also referred to as the Model Window. As you work through this tutorial you will use many of the commands through these toolbars and the Dashboard. The options in the Feature Creation Toolbar and the Dashboard will vary depending on the operation.

Pro/ENGINEER Wildfire requires the use of a 3 button mouse. If possible a mouse with a combined middle wheel & button can improve User interaction with Pro/ENGINEER Wildfire.

NOTE: The screen captures and illustrations in this tutorial include some of the information and instructions that will be required in order to successfully complete this project.

Working with multiple parts 1. Before you begin, let’s look at this project more

closely. The Cell Phone consists of 8 component parts. You will be required to build each of the parts and create the assembly.

2. All of the parts will be created in the cell phone directory. Therefore, make sure that you set your working directory correctly.

Task 1: Set Working Directory NOTE: Check with your instructor in order to get the proper procedures for setting the working directory in your lab.

3. Start Pro/ENGINEER Wildfire. Use the sash

controls to close the browser window. 4. In the Navigator Window (down the left-hand

side of Pro/ENGINEER), browse to the “cell phone” folder.

5. If the Navigator is not displaying Folders left-

click the Folder tab at the top Navigator Window.

6. Right-click the “cell phone” folder, and in the menu that appears select Set Working Directory.

Task 2: Creating a new Pro/ENGINEER part 1. From the Pro/ENGINEER main toolbar left-click

Create New File . In the dialog box that appears enter LENS

2. Notice that Part is selected as the default Type

3. Left-click OK to accept the settings and create the new Pro/ENGINEER part file.

4. When the part opens you should see the default

Datum Planes, FRONT, TOP, & RIGHT, and the default coordinate system DEFAULT_CSYS displayed in the graphics window and Feature Navigation pane.

NOTE: Your computer screen will appear with a

different set of colors. These changes have been made to improve the clarity.

Important Note: The detailed directions in this tutorial will be limited to Pro/ENGINEER concepts that were not addressed in the Building Block tutorial. It is very important that you complete the Building block tutorial before you proceed.

Task 3: Creating the Lens

1. To create the Lens begin by selecting the FRONT Datum Plane

2. Select the Sketch Tool

3. Sketch Centerlines locked to the Datum Planes

4. Sketch an Arc below the centerlines that is approximately centered on the vertical centerline.

5. Do not worry about dimensions at this point, you will enter Strong Dimensions later.

6. Sketch vertical lines from the each end of the arc up to the horizontal centerline

7. Mirror the geometry about the horizontal centerline.

8. Select the dimensions and change them to match: height: 0.84, width: 1.32, radius of the arc is 1.69, the distance from the vertical centerline to the right edge of the Lens is 0.66

9. Now you will save the lens section to a file. We will use this section later to help create the lens opening in the front cover, at that time you will import this section to establish the outline for the cutout.

10. Click File; Save a Copy. Enter the name lens in the New name text box in the Save dialog box.

11. Click OK

12. Complete the Sketch

13. In the Model View window select Extrude 14. Set the depth of the extrusion to 0.05, select the

green check to complete the operation 15. Save the part

16. Select the Round Feature to round all four corners to a 0.08 radius

Task 3: Creating the speaker

1. From the Pro/ENGINEER main toolbar left-click Create New File . In the dialog box that appears enter SPEAKER

2. Notice that Part is selected as the default Type

3. Left-click OK to accept the settings and create the new Pro/ENGINEER part file.

4. Make sure that the Datum Planes and the Axes are select so they will be visible

5. Select the FRONT Datum plane and begin this part by sketching the main circle, then extrude it to the depth specified.

6. The diameter of the circle is 0.31

7. The extrusion depth is 0.06

8. Select the Chamfer Feature , this is similar to the Round Feature however, the edge is removed at an angle

9. Select the edge of the part

10. Set the Chamfer dimension in the Dashboard to 0.01

11. Complete the operation, save the part

12. To add the ring of speaker holes we will insert holes in the part

13. From the Main Menu select Insert

14. Select Hole

15. Click the front surface of the part, a hole will be placed in the preview mode

16. In the Dashboard, enter the diameter: 0.03, and the depth: 0.05

17. To lock the hole in position the Reference Handles must have something to reference.

18. Select one of the Reference Handles, drag it to the Axis in the center of the speaker

19. The handle should snap to the Axis and a white square with a black dot will appear indicating that the axis has been selected as a reference

20. Drag the second Reference Handle to the TOP Datum Plane. The Datum will highlight, a white square with a black dot will appear

21. The Axis and the TOP Datum should appear in the Placement panel as references.

22. Select the Radius dimension, enter 0.10

23. Select the Angle, enter 0.00

24. The hole will be centered on the Datum Plane

25. Click to close the Placement window

26. complete the operation , save the part

27. Now a radial pattern of holes has to be created based on the first hole

28. Select the Hole in the Model Tree, right-click to open the secondary menu

29. Select Pattern

30. The dashboard opens with the Pattern options

31. The Pattern has 6 holes

32. Select Dimension, select the angular dimension of the hole, it will appear as Direction 1, Dimension

33. Change the Increment to 60 degrees

34. Close the Dimension panel

35. Change the number of copies to 6, press ENTER

36. Six black dots will appear indicating the centers of the holes

37. Complete the operation, save the part, close the window

Task 4: Creating the microphone

1. From the Pro/ENGINEER main toolbar left-click Create New File . In the dialog box that appears enter MICROPHONE

2. Notice that Part is selected as the default Type 3. Left-click OK to accept the settings and create

the new Pro/ENGINEER part file.

4. Select the FRONT Datum plane and begin this

part by sketching a rectangle, then extrude it to the depth specified.

5. The width is 0.40 6. The height is 0.30 7. The extrusion depth is 0.15

8. With the extrusion complete, select the front surface of the part as the sketching plane, then select Sketch

9. Sketch a rectangle inside the part that is offset 0.06 to the inside

10. Complete the sketch, select Extrude 11. Make sure that the extrusion is going into the

part 12. Set the depth to 0.03, select Remove Material

13. Complete the operation, save the part 14. The vertical slots will be identical, centered

horizontally and vertically, and offset equally from the center of the microphone

15. The slot are also associated so that an edit to

one is reflected in both 16. You will use Construction Lines to mark the

center of the part. Then create one slot, this will then be mirrored to create the second slot

17. Select the floor of the cut that was just completed as the sketch plane

18. To locate the slot select Sketch from the Main Menu, select References

19. Select the outer edges of the first extrusion, these will appear in the References dialog

20. Close the References dialog 21. Use the Line tool to create a diagonal lines from

corner to corner, middle-click to exit the line tool

22. These lines are here only to assist in the placement of other geometry, it is a Construction Line. Select the line, right-click to open the secondary menu, select Construction to change the line type

23. Select the Point Tool to place a sketch point at the intersection of the Construction Lines

24. As you move the point to the intersection the point will become and M indicating that it is at the center of the rectangle.

25. Locate the point here. The center is now permanently located because it is constrained to the middle of the line

26. Create horizontal and vertical centerlines on the center point

27. Create the upper half of the left hand slot 28. Zoom in to the upper left of the part

29. Use the Line Tool to create two equal length vertical lines

30. Use the Arc Tool to create an arc tangent to the lines. Place the arc when the two T symbols appear

31. Click the Selection Tool drag a selection rectangle around the lines and arc

32. Select Mirror , select the horizontal centerline

33. The lines are mirrored to create the first cut 34. Adjust the dimensions to add the final

dimensions. 35. The center of the arcs are 0.13 from left edge of

the part (first extrusion), 0.10 from arc center to arc center, arc diameter is 0.04

36. Select the slot, select Mirror, select the vertical centerline to create the second slot

37. Complete the sketch

38. Extrude the slots into the part, set the depth to 0.03

39. Select Remove Material , complete the operation

Task 5: Creating the PC Board

1. The PC Board is a simple part that will include a Datum Curve as a reference for the placement of the keypad

2. Create a new part file 3. Name the part PC_BOARD 4. Use the FRONT Datum Plane as the sketch

plane 5. Place a vertical centerline down the vertical

datum 6. The TOP Datum is the horizontal reference 7. Draw the rectangle so the bottom of the

rectangle is on the TOP Datum Plane

8. The rectangle is 4.50 tall, 1.5 wide, the rectangle is centered on the vertical centerline

9. Complete the sketch 10. Extrude to a depth of 0.06

11. Complete the operation , save the part 12. Chamfer the lower corners 13. Select the lower edge, rotate the part if

necessary to see the other lower edge, hold the CTRL key to select the second edge

14. Select Chamfer

15. In the dashboard, select 45 x D as the type of chamfer, change the distance D to 0.14, press ENTER

16. Complete the operation

17. Next, we will round the top of the PC board 18. Click Insert, select Round 19. Select the top edges at the opposite end of the

part 20. Select Sets from the dashboard 21. Select Full Round 22. Complete the operation, save the part

23. Select Insert, select Hole to begin creating the

holes in the PC Board, select the front surface and place the hole

24. Drag one Reference Handle to the Right Datum Plane, drag the second Reference Handle to the TOP Datum Plane

25. In the Hole dashboard, change the settings as shown below

26. To create the second hole, select Insert, select

Hole 27. Place the hole in the upper part of the PC Board 28. Drag the Reference Handles to the TOP and the

RIGHT Datum Planes as before 29. Make the necessary change in the dashboard,

open Placement and change the setting to those shown

30. Complete the operation, save the part

31. Mirror the holes 32. Select the holes from the model tree 33. Select Hole 1, hold the SHIFT key and select

Hole 2. Both of the holes will highlight on the part

34. Select Edit from the Main Toolbar, select Mirror 35. Select the RIGHT Datum Plane 36. Complete the operation

37. Create a Datum Curve for the Keypad

Reference 38. A Datum Curve is a type of datum that is created

by defining a series of points connected by an arc. We will sketch a flat datum curve in Sketcher. This datum cure will be used to show the PC board designer the intended position of the keypad.

39. Select Insert, select Model Datum, Sketch 40. The Sketch dialog opens, select the front

surface of the PC board as the sketching plane

41. Click Sketch

References 43. Select the side edges as references, close the

dialog 44. Draw a rectangle across the middle of the PC

board. 45. The cursor will snap to the reference lines 46. Dimension as shown 47. Complete the sketch

48. The Datum curve is added as a simple outline sketch

49. In order to make it more visible we will add a crosshatch

50. To crosshatch, right-click the datum curve in the Model Tree (it may be labeled as sketch 2)

51. Select Edit Definition 52. Select Sketch from the Main Toolbar, select

Sketch Setup to open the Sketch dialog 53. Select the Properties tab and check the X hatch

checkbox to turn on crosshatching 54. Select Sketch

55. Complete the sketch 56. Select View from the Main Toolbar, select Color

and Appearance, change the color of the PC board to a shade of green

57. Save the part, close the window

Task 5: Creating the antenna NOTE: The Antenna is made using the Revolve Feature. We have not used this feature before, therefore, the instructions will be more complete for making this part.

1. Create a New file named ANTENNA 2. Select the FRONT Datum Plane, select Revolve

When you created the speaker for the cell phone you defined a radial pattern to create the speaker holes. NOTE: Important read this before proceeding. The design intent is to keep the large buttons vertically spaced to the lower pattern in the same proportion as the lower pattern buttons are vertically spaced to each other. We will use a relational formula to keep the proportion exact. You will also learn how to reference dimensions by their ID numbers (example: d56) rather than their values. To toggle the display between dimension values and ID numbers, use Info>Switch Dimensions. (The dimension ID numbers may be different from the ones shown here.) The dimension ID has a prefix that identifies its dimension type. A dimension in Sketcher will have an s in front of the d, noting it as a Sketcher dimension (example: sd44). Dimensions for the elliptical buttons use the letters Rx and Ry for radius x-direction and radius y-direction. You don’t need the extra prefix letters when entering the dimension IDs in relations. The dimension Ryd8 would just be entered as d8. The relation includes the dimension between the vertical centers of two adjacent small buttons (d273) and the button y-direction radius (d269) as shown in the next figure. It stipulates that the distance between the bottom edge of the large button and the center of the small button below it (d301) is the same as the distance between the edge of a small button and the center of the next one in the vertical direction. That distance is the distance between two button centers, minus the radius of one button. So the expression you’ll enter is:

Task 8: Adding screw post extrusions to the back cover NOTE: This task will complete the back cover. You will use a standard-spec type of screw hole in the post, and add rounds to the posts’ intersection with the shell. When you have finished these operations, you will copy and mirror them to the opposite side of the shell. Because the posts sit below the surface of the shell profile, you will make a datum plane below the rim of the shell to use as a sketching plane. The posts will extrude from the new plane down to the floor of the shell, the same way the antenna brace joined the shell.

1. Select one long section of the shell edge, hold the Ctrl key and select the opposite long section, select OK

2. This will place a new datum that we will use to locate the offset datum for the posts.

3. Select Insert, Model Datum, Plane 4. Select the Plane that was just created, make

sure the direction arrow is pointing into the shell, set the offset to 0.06

Task 9: Creating the front cover The front cover is similar to the back cover in that it is a shelled protrusion with screw posts extruding from the interior surface. It includes cuts to accept the lens and mounting shelves for the speaker and the microphone parts. The front cover also requires cuts to accommodate the buttons of the keypad. In this case, the easiest way to create the holes in the front cover is to do it at the assembly level. When the keypad and the front cover are part of an assembly, you can create all the required cuts by removing material where interference exists between the two parts. The cutouts are passed back to the part and remain stored with it.

1. Create a new part named FRONT_COVER 2. The basic extrusion should follow these

dimensions: Height = 4.75, Width = 1.75, Depth 0.195.

3. Center the sketch side to side and place the lower edge of the rectangle on the TOP Datum Plane

select Insert, Model Datum, Plane again 10. Select the datum that you just created as a

reference, the new datum appears in preview 11. Set the translation value to 2.00, click OK in

NOTE: Create the earpiece holder as a thin extrusion. A thin extrusion is hollow, which precludes combining a solid and a cut to define a shape, for example, a cylinder. You give a thin extrusion a wall thickness value when you define the section. Once again you will be placing a feature through a surface that is not level, in this case, the curved upper surface of the front cover. The solution is to extrude it down to the floor of the cover from an offset datum plane, as shown below. The depth setting of through to next will make the collar conform to the surface when the two intersect.

89. Select Insert, Extrude. Click Insert, Model Datum, Plane to create a datum to be used as the sketching plane. Use the upper surface of the shell for the offset reference and offset the new datum plane by -0.10 from the reference surface.

90. Zoom in on the ear hole pattern, select the center hole, create a Concentric Circle, set the diameter to 0.28, this will be the inside diameter. Complete the sketch

91. Set to extrude to intersect with selected surface , make sure the arrow points into the

cover

92. Select the Thicken Sketch icon enter 0.03 as the wall thickness

93. Click the Direction icon , make sure that the sketched dimension is the inside diameter.

94. The icon toggles the thickness to the inside of the section, the outside of the section, or the center of the section. Watch the preview as you toggle, the feature will be at it’s largest when the section is used as the inside diameter.

Task 10: Assembling the Cell Phone You’ll start assembling the cell phone by placing a “base component” into an empty assembly file. You will then use placement constraints to ass each subsequent part and orient it to the base component. These constraints determine whether surfaces and edges are aligned, mated, or offset, and by what values or limits. Assembly Constraints Constraints in an assembly are similar to those used in Sketcher in that there must be enough of them to complete the placement of a part in relation to another part in 3D. You must establish references in two directions, define a surface or edge relationship (mate or align with an offset if required), and enter values for references. When enough constraints are on a part in an assembly, the part is fully constrained. A part can be added to an assembly without it being fully constrained. In this case, the part is considered packaged. You can interactively import, place, and constrain parts to build an assembly object by object. You can also use automatically determined placement constraints to speed up the process. We will use both methods for assembling the cell phone. When you start an assembly, you must first determine which part will be the base component. All of the subsequent components that you assemble reference this component either directly or indirectly. Therefore, you should always use a part that you are not likely to remove from the assembly. For this assembly we will use the Front Cover as the base component.

1. Begin by creating a new assembly file 2. Click Insert, Component, Assemble. The Open

dialog appears, select front_cover.prt 3. The front cover appears and the Component

Placement dashboard opens 4. Click the Default constraint set from the

Automatic constraint set list to assemble the front cover in the default position. This will align the part coordinate system with the assembly coordinate system.

You will hide the front cover in order to provide a clear view of the PC Board so the selections will be easier. When you add a component to an assembly, you may not know where that part fits best, or you might not want to locate it relative to other geometry. You can leave such a component either partially constrained or unconstrained. An unconstrained componet is called a packaged component.

An interference occurs after you unhide the Front Cover, because the height of the keypad’s buttons exceeds the depth of the Front Cover. Although the buttons appear to protrude through the Front Cover, you must cut out the keypad button holes. Using the assembly to cut the holes lets you modify the Front Cover using the dimensions of the Keypad, without opening either part file. The holes will be passed back to the Front Cover part as an assembly feature.

Task 11: Create a Drawing of the Antenna You will now create a drawing of the Antenna. The drawing will in clued a detailed view of the Antenna tip in order to provide better clarity.

1. Open the Antenna part file 2. Create a new Drawing File 3. In the Specify Template area, select Empty with

format 4. Select A_SIZE_SHEET from the Format drop

down 5. Select OK 6. Bring in the Antenna placing it as shown 7. Change the Properties as needed 8. Select Insert, Drawing View, Detailed 9. You will be prompted to select the item, click on

the tip of the antenna 10. Next you will be prompted to draw a spline

around the object, make sure to include the entire tip

11. Make sure that the spline is closed, the spline will become a circle

12. You will be prompted to locate the center of the Detailed drawing

13. Dimension the Antenna and the Detail 14. Make sure that you put your name and the date

on the drawing before printing. 15. Save the drawing.
