This directory is intended to be a valuable information resource for clubs,schools, youth groups and the community at large in making availablecontact details of the wide diversity of health, sports and physical activityclubs within the Swale area.

The contacts for these clubs and organisations are normally a dedicatedgroup of volunteers who give up their free time for their club and sport.Please bear this in mind when trying to contact clubs within this directory.

All the information within this directory was received from the clubs andreproduced with their consent and the contents are correct at the time ofgoing to press. A regularly updated list is available at www.swale.gov.uk andclick on Sports Development.

The benefits of regular physical activity are well researched and accepted.Regular physical activity improves both your physical and mental health. It isone of the most important factors in maintaining a good quality of life. Theheart is the most important muscle that we possess and it needs regularexercise to keep it fit to pump blood around the body to our muscles andbrain.

Regular physical activity (this means working hard enough to make breathingharder than normal, and becoming slightly warmer and at least 30 minuteson 5 days a week) will make a difference to your quality of life in manydifferent ways.

Regular physical activity should also be supplemented by healthy eating.Healthy eating is about eating a balanced diet, there are no good or badfoods. All foods can be included in a healthy diet as long as they areconsumed in moderation and the overall balance of nutrients is correct. The balance of healthy eating should include the following 5 food groups:

Fruit and vegetables,Bread, potatoes, pastaMeat, and fishMilk, and dairy productsFoods with fat and sugar

and be based on the following principles

enjoy your foodeat a wide variety of foodseat the right amount to be a healthy weighteat plenty of fruit and vegetableseat plenty of foods with starch and fibredon’t eat too many foods with fat and sugardrink plenty of waterdon’t drink too much alcohol, fizzy or sugary drinks

Sheppey Leisure Complex houses a main hall with a viewing area, which plays hostto a range of activities such as badminton, basketball, 50 plus sessions, five asidefootball and circuit training classes. It also has two squash courts and an aerobicsstudio, which is used for fitness classes and by local clubs. The site also boasts asauna and sun-beds, in addition to ISOSPA Gym the ideal place to shape up, in arelaxed atmosphere. You will find our staff so friendly & helpful that you willforget just how hard your working! Outside facilities include tennis courts and apaddling pool.

A short step away, Sheerness swimming pool has great facilities for those who liketo get splash happy…. Sittingbourne Community College Sports CentreThis dry side facility offers a wealth of sporting and leisure opportunities to thelocal community. Situated on the outskirts of Sittingbourne, it is easily accessiblefrom the nearby residential areas, and boasts plenty of free parking for thosefrom further a field.

SCCSC has a multi purpose Sports Hall offering a wide range of activities, from football and badminton to volleyball and baton twirling and muchmore.

One ancillary hall offers customers the chance to enjoy fitness classes, martialarts and table tennis, and the site also has 2 squash courts. The halls are alsoavailable for range of non-sporting activities such as trade fairs, discos andprivate parties.

Outside activities are catered for by one of the best multi court pitches in the area,so that you can play Netball, football, hockey or tennis - floodlights make playpossible into the evening if required. All courts can be booked by the hour, on aregular or casual basis.

For children, there is plenty to offer - junior sports courses run each term, andparty animals parties are great fun too…

The Faversham Community Gymnastic and Activity CentreFaversham Gym Club and Activity Centre is situated next to the Recreation ground,in a new purpose built Centre. We are home to Faversham Gymnastics Club andrun classes for all ages from babies just walking upwards. All abilities are cateredfor, with a competitive squad for the more serious gymnasts. We have two sunkentrampolines and a separate trampolining Club.

There are classes in aerobics, yoga, circuit training and martial arts for Adults anda fitness suite with machines and Free weights. Older people or those withmedical conditions can benefit from Active for life classes run for rehabilitation.

Alongside the gym area is the adventure play Centre with a large indoor soft playframe for children under 12. This is available on Mondays, Wednesdays andFridays and weekends for public use and we are a popular venue for children'sparties. There is a café in the centre selling a range of drinks and snacks atreasonable prices.

Both Gym and Adventure play areas can be hired for private use. Educational andSpecial needs Groups benefit from the preferential prices, and the Adventure Playis used exclusively for such hire on Tuesdays and Thursdays.

The Council are responsible for outdoor formal sports pitches and facilities inmany of the parks and recreation grounds in Swale. These include football, rugby,hockey, tennis, cricket and bowls.

A number of these facilities although owned or part owned by the Council aremanaged in partnership with other organisations to ensure the best possiblelocal service provision.

Our grounds maintenance contractor, Blenwood, maintains the majority of theCouncil's pitches. There is a full specification of works during the season andreinstatement work is carried out at the end of each season to prepare for thenext.

Pitches are booked through the Council or directly with the partner organisationrunning the facility and the following table lists all the facilities available andcontacts for booking.

Beaches and Water SportsThe Isle of Sheppey has won three awards for its beaches including the Blue Flag.Dog free beaches can be found at Sheerness, Minster Leas and Leysdown On Sea.Barton's Point Costal Park features a lake with boats to hire, a pitch and Puttcourse, a model railway, picnic area and a windsurfing with tuition if required.Water sports enthusiasts are spoilt for choice with a host of opportunities rangingfrom scuba diving and windsurfing through to dinghy sailing and catamaranraces.
