letter fromthe director

Dear Friendsof Happy Trails,

This is the first in a series of specialedition “Sponsorship Opportunities”newsletters in response to the popularquestion, “What else can we sponsor?”

The world is changing. It is finallybecoming understood on a broad scalethat animal abuse is animal abuse, nomatter what animal is on the receivingend, whether it is a dog or cat, or one ofthe many farm animals that comethrough our doors at Happy Trails. Ouranimal abuse cases are so often linkedto other violent crimes. One recent casein Columbiana County that ended with aguilty verdict several weeks ago startedout with an investigation of domesticviolence by a local police officer. It wasthen he discovered the emaciatedhorses and neglected farm animals.

The challenge that many peopleface is they want to make a differenceand they want to partner with HappyTrails Farm Animal Sanctuary toaddress abuse of horses and farmanimals, but with today’s busy andhectic life-styles, folks often just don’thave the time to volunteer or getinvolved as much as they’d like to.

Sponsorship opportunities give youthe ability to make a difference bychoosing where you want your donationto be spent. Sponsorships can be acomplete sponsorship or in part. Forexample, you may wish to sponsor hooftrimming for all 50 horses, or you maywant to sponsor hoof trimming for onlyone rescued horse. We, and the one

But if you would like to put yourname on a project, sponsor a barn orshelter in full, or completely takeownership of a certain need, your name(or the name of your business ororganization) can stake your claim tofame and have a sign attached to thatneed, showing the world you are makinga difference.

We value ALL donations andsupport. Every penny that comes intoHappy Trails enables us to provideservices that are unique, and enable usto help people connect with animals in abig way. I love those commercials thatsay, “The more you know...” It’s true. The more everyone understands theimportance of addressing animal abuseof all animals, the closer we get tohaving safer communities and morekindness and compassion in our lives.

Thank you for taking the time toread our special Sponsorship Editionnewsletter, and to then share it with afriend or co-worker. We welcome yourcalls and emails — let us help youchoose something meaningful to you tosponsor, in whole or in part. Call us at330-296-5914 or email [email protected].

The New Education Center

On Thursday, April 23rd,

Happy Trails hosted our first

equine health class in the new

Education Center, with nearly 30

people in attendance! The

acquisition of this new property

has been a dream-come-true for

Happy Trails, and is enabling us

to present a variety of seminars,

clinics, and workshops this year

to help people connect with and

learn more about animals.

To get the new property in

good repair, we had to do an

assortment of upgrades and

updates to bring things up to

code. We made the necessary

improvements to launch our

classes, but still have some

needs we will have to address as

we continue to make improve-

ments and repairs. Sponsorships

of any of these needs will help us

create the new Education Center

and make it possible for us to

host animal-related educational

classes and other workshops.

Water Softener -$450We had to replacethe water softener inthe new EducationCenter. The old watersoftener was bad andbeyond repair.

Hot WaterHeater - $250It was necessary toreplace the hot waterheater in order toestablish workingbathrooms.

Parking Lot - $2,200Additional parking was needed, and wecreated this new parking area to the leftof the driveway. After removing thesurface layer of top soil, a geo-cloth waslaid and #306 limestone was smoothedinto place. The parking extends from thehouse all the way to the street. Thisproject is half-way completed, and weanticipate completing the second half ofthe new parking lot by June. While weare paying for gravel, much of the laborwas donated by Happy Trails neighborand dedicated volunteer, Dave Robinson, who operated the Happy Trails excavatorand skidsteer. Thanks Dave!

New Sign - $80A small printed sign wascreated and placed in thefront of the property. Thewooden background andposts that would hold theactual sign was sandedand painted by volunteer,Alex Hale.

Plumbing Repairs -

$1,030Considering that someonestolen all the copper pipingout of the house beforeHappy Trails purchased itat the sheriff’s auction, replacement of the plumb-ing was crucial to makingsure the bathrooms wereoperational for guests.

Drywall - $925Multiple walls neededdrywall repaired due to thedamage done by thieveswho stole the copperpiping out of the walls. Wehave pictures of thedamage we can show you.

New Furnace/AirConditioner - $5,400The experts tell us the oldfurnace is not worth fixing and

it’s time to install anew furnace

with an airconditioningunit. This isan expensethat we arehoping toaddress assoon aspossible, since this

necessary item iscrucial to making the classescomfortable with cool air duringthe hot summer and providingheat for our facility in the winter.

Table - $40A table was needed for theprojector which is used forthe Power Point presenta-tions.

page 6

The New Education Center

Carpet Cleaning - $139Though we would love toremove the carpet in the house,we discovered that there is onlyplywood underneath the carpet. So for now, until we can getother funding or a sponsor toinstall a commercial flooring, wechose to go the cheaper routeof simply cleaning the carpetthroughout the entire house. Our goal will be to somedayremove the carpet and install alaminate flooring for ease ofcleaning.

Projector Screens

- $286 X 2We installed a wall-mount projectorscreen to allow theveterinarians and classinstructors to usepower point presenta-tions for classes. Weneed one screen in theupper classroom, andone screen in thelower classroom.

Painting theBathroom - $400After repairing the wallsand the plumbing andtearing out an oldshower, the bathroomneeded painted. This isone of two bathroomsin the facility. So far ourbudget has onlyallowed us to repairone of the bathrooms. To repair the secondbathroom would double all the costs. Your dona-tions will help make this happen.

Bathroom Flooring - $600The finishing touch to repair thedamaged bathroom was to installa flooring. The removal of theshower/tub hadleft adamagedarea ofthe floor, and it wasnecessaryto replacethe tile onthe floor.

Fencing for Horses - $18,850The back four acres of property are beingfenced in for the rescued horses. This areawill include two turn-out areas, completewith gates linking each pasture. The fencewill consist of wooden posts, horse-safefield fencing, top wooden boards, a row ofelectric, and an electric charger. The entireproject will cost $18,850. A generous donorhas contributed $10,000 toward the cost ofthis project. To complete the project, weneed to raise $8,850.

Dumpster - $450We rented a dumpster to remove themiscellaneous ‘treasures’ left behind inthe house and garage. Volunteers workedhard on cleaning out the ‘stuff’, and doingan overall cleaning of the house in gen-eral, saving the sanctuary the expense oflabor.

Lighting - $80An area of theupper classroomhas no overheadlight. Instead ofhaving theexpense ofinstallingceiling lighting,a lamp waspurchased toprovide light inthat area ofthe classroom.

page 7

Painting the Classrooms - $1,747This cost involved preparing and painting thewalls and ceilings of the two classrooms, front entrance and hallway, and the newlyrepaired kitchen wall. Thewalls are now a uniform, inviting, welcoming, softyellow color.

Vehicles and Machinery

Backhoe — $5,000Backhoe Repairs —$255Last year Happy Trails purchased aback hoe for $5,000 to help makeus more self-reliant and able to doa great deal of our own work onthe property. There is constantly aneed for heavy equipment in ourprojects at the sanctuary. Thebackhoe has been running great, but was recently in need of an airfilter, ignition switch, fuel pump, and a few other parts as well. While the backhoe itself was not origi-nally an expected purchase, the price was right for such a great piece ofequipment and it has saved us thousands of dollars already not havingto rent a back hoe or pay someone else for this service.

Dump Truck Repairs — $5,330.57We continue to limp Ol’ Blue along since she is used mainly for haulingmanure off the property of Happy Trails about three times per week. Sherecently was in needof a few majorrepairs, which causedher to be “off work”for about four weekswhile parts werebeing ordered andrepairs were beingmade. She finallycame back to work, with a repair bill of$5,330.57. While therepairs may soundcostly, it is still a greatdeal cheaper thanhaving to replace her.Just like the oldsaying...”Better thedevil you know, than the devil you don’t.” We have put a lot of improve-ments in Ol’ Blue over the years, and we know what she is capable of andwhat she isn’t. We hope that she will be with us for a long time to come.

Her repairs included: replacing all eight of the fuel injectors; millingthe heads because they were warped; installing all new valve guides;where it was leaking, replacing all four valves; two bolts in each head werebroken and needed replaced; installing new gaskets all the way around;replacing all the cap screws for the exhaust manifolds; $325 of the costwent to totally clean out the radiator and repair it’s leak, and then put itback together; they had to do two complete oil changes during the repairsfor $135 (there are 4½ gallons of oil in each oil change); put 32 locks onthe exhaust manifolds; and so much more. They did a TON of work!

And now thankfully Ol’ Blue is back in business for hopefully anotherten years at least!

Manure Dumpsters —$1,250But while Ol’ Blue was off work, westill had to have our manure hauledaway. The cost to the sanctuary formanure dumpsters while the truckwas in recovery came to a total of$1,250. We were certainly glad towelcome her back.

Tractor — $1,000Tractor Brakes and MinorRepairs — $178Last year Happy Trails also pur-chased a used tractor for $1,000 -an unheard of low price in theworld of tractors. This tractor wasworth about five times what wepaid for it, and it serves us well. However, it would be great to beable to stop it. Replacing thebreaks is a must in order to keepusing it, and it needs a few otherminor pieces-parts as well. Otherthan that, it runs like a champ!

Tires for the Bobcat —$250 eachThe Bobcat works very hard everyday at the sanctuary, hauling andmovingeverythingimaginable. It’s that timeonce againwhere itneeds newtires. Thetires andcost for mounting are $250 pertire, and all four tires need re-placed for a grand total of $1,000.

5 Life Size Animal Cut Outs —$250One of the things that attracts people toHappy Trails booths is the rescued

animals when they are there with us inperson. However, depending on the environ-ment, it is not always realistic for us to bringanimals to each event. One of the things that

seems to equally draw a crowd to our displays is life-size cut-outs of our rescued animals. Theyserve as a conversation starter and helpus break the ice with potential adopters, donors, volunteers, and tourists. The cost is$50 per animal, and we can feature fiveHappy Trails animals for $250.

Animal Care

Misc. Needs

Expanding Sheep Fencing —$100Kyle and Renaldo are ornery boyswho enjoy playing around. Theircurrent yard is fairly small and wewould like to expand it if possible.Additional fencing for Kyle andRenaldo will expand their out-door area to about ten times thecurrent size. This will be benefi-cial for not only Kyle and Renaldo, but for any animals who comeafter them and get to recover inthat yard area.

Pig Vet Expenses — $1,800Are you a “pig person”? Pigs are some of the most entertaining creatures,

and also the best teachers - showing uslessons like how to take life one day at atime, enjoy naps every afternoon, anddon’t turn down a belly rub if it helpsyou relax. The pigs require vet attentionyearly, just like your dog. They getvaccinated, have their hooves trimmed, get their eyes and ear canals cleanedout, are dewormed, and are tranquedto handle the experience of an exami-nation. The vet cost is $100 per pig for

their yearly exam. Considering we have 18 rescued pot belly pigs at HappyTrails, at $100 per pig, it adds up very quickly.

Equine Teeth Floating —$145 x 50 horses(Right) Veterinarian Dr. Avery Sauder

and her assistant work on floating

teeth for one of the Happy Trails

horses. Teeth floating is a dentalprocedure that needs done once ayear for horses to maintain theintegrity and health of their teeth sothey can eat and digest food prop-erly. Due to the way they chew, the diet they have, and their age, theycan grind sharp edges onto their teeth which need to be filed down toprevent mouth ulcers and promote better chewing. There are approxi-mately 50 horses in the Happy Trails rescue program at this time, and thisSpring, all needed their annual teeth floating at $145 per horse.

Printing Costs...• Tour Brochures — $290

• Getting To Know UsBrochures — $165

• Planned GivingBrochures — $72.50

• Horse Stall SponsorshipBrochures — $82Happy Trails is always strivingfor ways to become more self-sustaining. To achieve this goal, we are creating a seriesof brochures and other promotional pieces of literatureto help promote the sanctuary and the services weprovide. The costs listed here are for printing thebrochures and promotional pieces. These costs occuragain with each re-print. Re-prints are always exciting, for that means that hundreds of brochures were pickedup at our community and special events!

Triple Your DonationThrough Gift ShopMerchandise!• Mugs and Mouse Pads— $376.12

• Logo Apparel andScreen Printing —$779.67

• Concrete Statuary —$650If you are a business entrepreneur, you understand thesaying, “You have to spend money to make money”. Inthe Happy Trails gift shop, we sell items that at thevery least triple our profits to raise funds for thesanctuary . In the case of t-shirts, we are often able tobring in five times or more the costs of the shirts. Theconcrete bird baths, statues and yard decorations willtriple your donation with a three-times mark up forthese items. Donations made that allow us to pur-chase items for our gift shop actually triple the incomefor the sanctuary. If you donate to the business side ofthings, your donation actually goes a very long way tomaking even more money for the rescued animals.

turkeys, sheep, goats, and cows.Happy Trails serves the entire

state of Ohio and any other staterequesting our help, and works incooperation with county humane

societies, animal protectiveleagues, and local and state lawenforcement officers. Animals in

our program must have beenremoved from a situation of

abuse, neglect or abandonmentby law officials, and cruelty

charges must be filed againstthe person(s) responsible

for the crime.

Our Mission

Valerie is one of 11 sheep that will be trimmedthis Spring. The total cost to have the group

professionally trimmed is $220, or $20 per sheep.

Safe Driveways and Walkways are Crucial!

Access to all areas of the sanctu-ary is a must for veterinarians andfor emergencies. While our dream isto someday be ableto afford cementwalk ways, cementparking lots andcement drivewaysthroughout thesanctuary, rightnow our immediategoal is to upgradesome of ourwalkways anddriveways, and geta new layer ofgravel in someareas and lay baserock down inother areas.

#304 lime-stone is the gravelof choice for mostdriveways, and a smaller pea gravelon some walking paths makes walk-ing easier and looks very nice as well.

We have guesstimated that tocomplete all our walkway and drive-

way areas, including the drivewaygoing back to the pet cemetery, wewill need to order 120 ton of #304

limestone at $20/ton. The total for#304 would be$5,450. While thatmay soundexpensive, it ismuch cheaperthan the $80,000quote we receivedfor concreting alarge portion ofthe driveways. Wealso are looking atapproximately 80tons of pea gravel,a less costly gravelfor the top layer insome places, at$13/ton for a totalof $1,840. A roll ofgeo-cloth that

goes underneath the new areas of thewalkways and drives is $500 per roll. You may wish to sponsor a ton ofgravel or sponsor the project!
