�e Mountain

Why Kanchenjunga?

Firstly, it is one of the least climbed 8,000m peaks, second only to Annapurna 1. According to the Himalayan Database, as of spring 2019 there have only been 374 successful ascents of Kanchenjunga, vs 9,000+ on Everest. Why do so few people climb Kanchenjunga? Because it is very remote, there’s no ‘easy’ route, the approach is long and challenging, and it is less popular than Everest or K2. Exactly the reasons why we want to climb it.

Secondly, it’s incredibly beau�ful. The area is wild and rugged, mostly untouched by tourism and true to its Tibetan roots. This is one of the only places in the world that you can find Red Pandas, Blue Sheep, and even Snow Leopards. The mountain is isolated from the other 8,000m giants, and towers above all the sub peaks surrounding it.

And lastly, but most importantly, it is a very significant mountain to the local people. So much so, that the first expedi�ons were asked not to stand on the true summit as this is God’s place. A tradi�on that remains for many expedi�ons today. Our lead Sherpa, Namgya, was born beneath Kanchenjunga. This will be his first �me climbing Kanchenjunga and to join him is both an honor and a privilege. This is the basis of our movie.

About Kanchenjunga

Kanchenjunga, also spelled Kangchenjunga, is the third highest mountain in the world. It lies between Nepal and Sikkim, India. Kanchenjunga’s main summit stands at 8,586 m, and was first climbed in 1955 by George Band and Joe Brown. The standard route (the route we have chosen) ascends the South West face, up the Yalung Glacier. This is the original route first climbed 65 years ago. Kanchenjunga means ‘Five treasures of high snow' in Tibetan.

�e Movie

Namgya grew up as a yak herder in the small village of Gyable, close to Kanchenjunga. He spent his early years exploring the steep slopes surrounding this impressive mountain. Through his adult life, he has progressed from a porter carrying loads and supplies, to becoming a well known high al�tude climbing guide with his own trekking and expedi�on business. Namgya has climbed Everest 14 �mes, and spends his winters guiding on Mt Vincent, Antarc�ca.

While he has climbed a number of 8,000m peaks, Namgya has not yet climbed his home mountain, Kanchenjunga, which is a dream of his. The movie will focus on Namgya, his story, Sherpa tradi�ons and culture, and the process of climbing Kanchenjunga - the world’s third highest mountain

Sherpa guides are incredible people, who risk their lives on the high peaks in order to provide for their families. However, they are o�en overlooked in movies and stories in favor or recognising the achievements of Western climbers. It’s �me they received the recogni�on they deserve.

�e Pitch

The team are looking to partner with local businesses for support on Kanchenjunga and making the movie possible. As a return for you support, the team can offer businesses exposure through: websites, social media, clothing logos, summit banners, expedi�on photos, and footage/recogni�on in the movie.

We are looking to raise $50,000 USD which will go towards funding:

An expedi�on medic (Sabina) to support the team at base camp Medical supplies Our film crew and equipment Post filming produc�on and release Base camp supplies and food Climbing hardwear, high al�tude camp supplies and food Payment and insurance for local staff Permits to enter Kanchenjunga area Travel to and from Kanchenjunga area
