Long Islanders since 1969.

Dear Friend of Fair Housing:
On October 2, 2019, Long Island Housing Services (LIHS). will host a Gala event at
Crest Hollow Country Club to highlight its 50th anniversary. The work of LIHS as a civil
rights agency is as critically needed and valuable now as it was when the organization
was founded.
Please help us to celebrate this special agency’s anniversary and its civil rights
accomplishments toward advancing the Fair Housing agenda and challenging
discrimination on Long Island. We are so pleased to be honoring civil rights super
attorney Frederick K. Brewington. And, to especially highlight our 50 year history,
we’ll honor Maxine D. Wilson, consummate Fair Housing organizer/advocate and
posthumously, Claire and Joseph Greene for their vision and combined 35+ years of
dedicated service. Come meet/greet our Honorees as well as LIHS’ former Executive
Directors, and current and past Board and Staff members!
In addition to the serious lack of housing options in all communities, discrimination is
still a pervasive problem faced by many in their housing search especially because of
race, disability, ethnicity, gender, income source and children. Seniors, young
professionals, college students and the economically disadvantaged are among those
who face significant challenges trying to secure affordable, safe, and inviting housing
on Long Island. In 2019, discrimination should not be an additional hurdle for those
looking for homes.
Please join us in demanding and supporting equal and fair treatment for all. Your
time, your monetary contributions and your support of our agency can make a
tremendous impact on the quality of life of your Long Island neighbors.
Sincerely,
Jennifer Martin, Esq. Connie Lassandro Gala Committee Co-Chair Gala Committee Co-Chair Board Secretary Board President

ABOUT Long Island Housing Services, Inc. (LIHS)
Long Island Housing Services, Inc. is a private, not-for-profit 501(c)(3) corporation, so donations are tax
deductible to the fullest extent of the law. LIHS is the only Long Island based, private fair housing advocacy
and enforcement agency dedicated to serving Nassau and Suffolk counties. LIHS challenges all illegal housing
discrimination including race, color, national origin, disability, religion, sex, familial, marital, military, source
of income, veteran’s status, domestic violence status, as well as age, alienage or citizenship status and
gender orientation.
Since the 1970’s, LIHS has sustained its credentials as a HUD-approved Counseling agency, and is the only LI
HUD-approved qualified Fair Housing enforcement agency. LIHS has achieved the GuideStar Platinum Seal of
Transparency and is a Better Business Bureau (BBB) Accredited Charity.
In the early 1970’s, the volunteer founders organized to successfully challenge real estate agencies,
management companies, landlords, and owners where investigation revealed solid evidence for
discrimination. In 1977, this group incorporated to become a non-profit fair housing agency, Suffolk Housing
Services.
In the mid-1980’s the agency became nationally acclaimed for its investigation and testing abilities with an
Eastern District landmark jury award of $565,000 in favor of two African-American air traffic controllers.
In coalition with other advocacy organizations, LIHS successfully worked to outlaw source of income
discrimination in 2000 for Nassau County; 2006 for Suffolk County; and 2019 for New York State. LIHS has
conciliated landmark settlements against several major developers in pursuing compliance with accessibility
in multi-family design and construction. LIHS has also challenged discriminatory advertisers, lenders,
scammers, real estate and management companies, discriminatory zoning and code enforcement and sales.
Since 2009, LIHS has provided legal services for foreclosure prevention, to bolster its mortgage counseling
services. LIHS educates the public on Fair Housing laws and Tenancy rights and resources.
