FAQIDSA INTERNATIONAL CONFERENCE

What is the Industrial Designers Society of America (IDSA)?The Industrial Designers Society of America (IDSA) is one of the world’s oldest, largest, member-driven society for product design, industrial design, interaction design, human factors, ergonomics, design research, design management, universal design and related design fields. IDSA organizes the renowned International Design Excellence Awards (IDEA®) competition annually; hosts an international conference and five regional conferences each year; and publishes Innovation, a quarterly journal, and designBytes, a weekly e-newsletter highlighting the latest headlines in the design world. IDSA’s charitable arm, the Design Foundation, awards undergraduate scholarships annually to further industrial design education.

What is IDSA’s International Conference? Each year, between 800 and 1,000 design practitioners, educators, students and business leaders from all over the world gather for IDSA’s International Conference and Education Symposium. The event combines provocative speakers with practical information and solutions as well as plenty of time for building personal and professional connections.

When and where is the 2011 International Conference?IDSA will hold this year’s conference in New Orleans, LA, Sept. 14-17.

FAQIDSA INTERNATIONAL CONFERENCE

What is the theme this year?“The order of the day in the future is a community that’s organized to respond to whatever comes its way. The only people who know how to do this are entrepreneurs and creative people.”

– New Orleans Mayor Mitch Landrieu

Catastrophe, whether natural or man-made, creates opportunity. Five years after Katrina stormed the Louisiana coast, and three years after the credit crisis tore a hole through the global economy— industrial design, like the city of New Orleans, finds itself ready to contemplate its future again. But as in New Orleans, where the conversation has progressed from mere recovery to envisioning a better city, industrial design finds itself contemplating what can be not merely what was. For both the city and the profession one factor seems to invigorate all possibilities: the power of community. Whether local or global, professional or amateur, online or physical—community and the dynamics it favors are increasingly at work in design and the marketplace it inhabits; changing the nature of what and how we design as it simultaneously reorients consumer behavior.

The 2011 Conference will track along three subthemes:– Attitudes and Behaviors: How societal factors such as 24/7 connectivity, social media and sustainability are changing the consumer; what they want, need and ultimately what it means to consume. Conference presentations will explore shifting consumer behaviors.

– Methods and Means: The effects of community on how we think, work and execute in design. Workshops will explore the new tools, venues and models through which design is conceived, developed, executed and ultimately distributed.

– Community as Context: How the needs of the individual, groups and the environment are impacting the design brief. In this category presentations examining social entrepreneurship, community initiated solutions, service design and in-the-field consumer research will be debated and explored.

Over the four days of the International Conference, we’ll explore the importance of community across multiple layers of design, exploring emerging social issues, the decentralizing influence of online resources in manufacturing and distribution, the interplay between local and global participants and many other topics.

Who presents? The typical IDSA International Conference presenter has achieved some monumental breakthrough in design/business, has sustained design/business excellence for many years or both. Past speakers include: Yves Béhar, IDSA, fuseproject; Bob Brunner, IDSA, Ammunition; Bill Moggridge, FIDSA, Cooper-Hewitt National Design Museum; John Barratt, IDSA, TEAGUE; Michael Graves, IDSA, Michael Graves Design Group; Walter Herbst, IDSA, Northwestern University; Bruce Nussbaum, IDSA, Businessweek; Jonah Becker, One & Co and Derek Elley, Ponoko.

I like the inspiration and opportunity to gain a pulse of the national/global design community. National conferences also add a level of legitimacy and credibility to our profession to business leaders and the “outside world.”

It is good to have visibility for the industry and a place for people to come together.

There is strength in numbers and value in networking with other industrial design professionals. We work collaboratively so we like to meet others and creatively and collaboratively work.

““

I think this event is very important to the future success of industrial design. The content is always fresh for key speakers—and the networking opportunities are great. As design becomes a greater focus in many business strategies, it would be interesting to see how it is affecting business—and make that connection.

1. Build affinity and showcase your commitment to design

2. Align your brand with design excellence

3. Gain valuable access to over 800 prospective and current clients

4. Increase your market share with your target audience

HOW TO GET INVOLVED

PG09

Pick your pleasure! A wide range of sponsorship opportunities offers you the perfect vehicle to meet your marketing objectives on any budget.

The opening reception and gallery opening are annual traditions at the conference that unite industry leaders in a comfortable environment perfectly suited for casual conversation, where your presence as a marquee sponsor will be highly visible and intensely interactive. Immediately following the opening session, the conference is kicked into high gear by the opening reception. Attendees leave the general session room and head to the Design Gallery exhibit hall for fabulous food and beverages. Plenty of signage and recognition from the conference chair during the opening session will put the focus on your company right from the start. Are you exhibiting? If so, speak to us about additional ways to put the spotlight on your company’s booth during the opening reception as the event sponsor. **The speaking opportunity included is two to five minutes.

Exclusive Sponsorship:Member Price: $30,000Nonmember Price: $36,000

Shared Sponsorship: (2 available)Member Price: $19,500Nonmember Price: $23,400

While presentation slots at the conference and symposium are completely at the discretion of the conference chair and therefore nearly impossible to come by, your company has the opportunity to speak before a packed room by sponsoring a breakfast on site. IDSA discontinued serving breakfast to the attendees several years ago and since then sponsors have stepped in to fill the void with breakfast presentations. Even better, you can target the attendees you want to reach by working with IDSA to mine our database for members who meet the profile of your target attendees (specifications to be supplied by your company). IDSA will provide mailing addresses so that personal invitations may be sent. IDSA will provide the room for the breakfast at no charge. Your company just needs to arrange and cover the costs of food, service and A/V (contact information will be provided). These breakfasts traditionally attract a maximum capacity crowd.**The speaking opportunity included is approximately 40 minutes.

Everyone needs a cup-a-joe before some intense learning and dialogue—give them the boost they need. Conference attendees look forward to the opportunity to grab some coffee between sessions, so IDSA will provide daily breaks in the Design Gallery. Your company’s signage and promotional materials will be displayed in the break area.
