The AGRI steering group recommended to Council in February that NFYFC support the current bovine viral diarrhoea (BVD) BVDFree campaign.

With the forthcoming launch imminent on July 1, NFYFC will be helping to communicate news and ways in which you too can help spread the message or get involved in this industry campaign.

The Cattle Health and Welfare Group (CHAWG) has been working collaboratively to develop a national programme of BVD eradication.

Need some help?Members of Shropshire FYFC have created an agricultural discussion group for YFC members to discuss up-to-date industry news. They were supported by two of their principle sponsors Alltech E-CO2 and Shropshire Farm Vets at their first meeting. More than 50 young farmers took part in an engaging question and answer session following presentations. One of the aims of the inaugural meeting was to gauge members’ ideas on what they wanted to achieve from the group and future topics of interest. The next meeting will be a local farm walk in July.

Ed Potter, current SFYFC chairman, said: “There is much uncertainty and volatility in the agricultural sector at present. The one thing that is certain is that the enthusiasm of young people for farming and the countryside is as strong as ever.”

Many of the Alltech E-CO2 team have been, or are currently, involved in the YFC movement and are aware of the contribution it makes to the agricultural industry. They are willing to offer support to other county federations who are interested in replicating agri discussion groups within their area. If you would like to discuss further contact Rachel Jones [email protected] or Carrie Bellas [email protected] or call the office on 01270 522 645.

What’s going on in Brussels, apart from the EU Referendum? Well quite a lot and you’ve probably heard a heart-felt address from the CEJA president Alan Jagoe when he attended the European Parliament to address serious issues affecting young farmers across Europe. Alan called on the EU to make new budget available to fund the implementation of Article 222 to enable producers to establish voluntary agreements on production.

Do you agree with Alan and do you feel that the voice of the President of CEJA resonates with you?

How does CEJA help you?

CEJA President’s pleaCEJA President Alan Jagoe addressed EU Agriculture Ministers and European Commissioner for Agriculture Phil Hogan at an informal Council meeting in Amsterdam on the theme ‘Food for the Future – the Future of Food’. Speaking on behalf of all European young farmers, he called for a positive signal to be sent to young farmers and an acknowledgement of how indispensable they are to the future of food.

Your NFYFC and NFU Next Generation Forum CEJA representatives attend working group meetings, seminars and conferences on your behalf. They are part of an important lobbying process to ensure that your voice is heard at the earliest opportunity and in the right place and context.

The AGRI group will be discussing future policy ideas and concerns and requesting your input. CEJA representatives’ details are available at the end of the newsletter.

New Matching Service Launched

The Fresh Start Land Partnerships Service opened on June 1 to help forge future rural and agricultural business opportunities.

The bespoke service has been developed to draw together entrepreneurs looking for innovative ways of working with land owners, business owners or land agents with an opportunity or land to offer. The initiative aims to fill a recognised gap and enable new businesses to thrive with new agreements forged between like-minded individuals who just need a means of tracking down the right business partner.

This work was highlighted by research from organisations that included NFYFC and CLA. With the help of national funding and an industry advisory group, the new service will help match budding entrepreneurs with opportunities, particularly where the approach may be slightly more innovative such as share farming.

Get ready to put your post-harvest and summer energy into three fantastic complementary campaigns and help promote your industry and YFC organisation at the same time!

September 12 heralds Red Tractor Week which leads nicely into National Young Farmers’ week September 19 (a cheeky chance to contact would-be members whilst supporting your industry) and the great British Food Fortnight September 17 – October 2. Whether you’re a producer or a consumer, these campaigns help support the fabric of our countryside and YFC organisation.

Ready to campaign?

Recent research shows that Red Tractor leads the way in food assurance and 58% of people surveyed said that the Red Tractor logo is the standard most likely to influence their buying decisions.

Red Tractor was established in 2000 and has grown to become the UK’s largest farm and food standards scheme, covering animal welfare, food safety, traceability and environmental protection.

A small, not for profit company, Red Tractor is run by the food industry to promote clearer labelling and ensure food originates from a trustworthy source. NFYFC is an industry partner for the forthcoming campaign and we’ll be sending out news of how you get involved, what materials you can use and how YFC can support the forthcoming campaign.
