Skull

•Usually consists of 22 bones

•All except lower jaw are firmly interlocked

•Divided into two parts:

•8 bones make up the cranium

•14 bones form the facial skeleton

*Why do we say “usually”?

Cranium is billed as "The Game for Your Whole Brain."

Unlike many other party games, Cranium includes a wide variety of activities.

Cranium

•Encloses and protects the brain

•Attachments for muscles that make chewing and head movements possible

Functions:

*Predict what would happen to your brain if you had a major cranium injury.

Frontal bone

•Anterior portion of skull

•Superior to Nasal cavity and eye sockets

•Includes area above the eyes, forehead, roof of nasal cavity and eye sockets

Parietal Bones

• Both parietal bones are located laterally on the skull•Posterior to the frontal bone•Form the bulging sides and roof of the cranium

Temporal Bones

•Located laterally on both side of the skull•Inferior to parietal bones

•House internal ear structures

Occipital bone

• Inferior to the parietal bones• Posterior to the temporal bones• Forms the base of the cranium

Facial Skeleton

•Forms basic shape of face

• 13 immovable bones

•1 movable lower jaw bone

•Provide attachments for muscles that move the jaw and control facial expressions *Hypothesize what the functions of

the facial skeleton are.

Maxilla

•Inferior to the frontal bone

•Anterior roof of mouth, floors of the orbits, sides and floor of nasal cavity

•All other immovable facial bones articulate with them

•Form the upper jaw

Nasal bones

•Anterior to eye sockets

•Superior to Maxilla

•Long, thin, & Rectangular

•Two bones fused at the midline

•Form the bridge of the nose

Mandible

• Inferior to maxilla

• Used for chewing

•Movable

•Lower jawbone
