Changing Lives...One Family at a Time.

Learning at Fair Havens

Throughout the school year, our school aged children arereceiving valuable assistance from a very special group ofvolunteer tutors. These caring individuals form precious

relationships with our young clients and help them with theirhomework and academic progress. The children eagerly anticipate‘tutor time’ with their special ‘friends’. The tutors’ patience, encouragement and skills have helped our children with theiracademic achievements as well as building their confidence andimproving their self concept. Midland Fair Havens appreciatesthese faithful and committed volunteer tutors whose contribution toour children’s success is irreplaceable!

“No significant learning occurs without a significantrelationship.” Dr. James Comer

The mission of Midland Fair Havens is to equip our families for

successful and independent living. A cornerstone to that goal is

academic achievement in school. Residential adult clients are

required to attend formal education programs to improve their

income capacity to reach a self sustaining income for their families.

In 2010, 74% of our residential clients were ‘first generation’ college

attendees. Through case management relationships that provided

encouragement and introduced them to numerous needed resources,

our Fair Havens clients achieved remarkable academic success even without

previous collegiate experience.

In 2010, Fair Havens had three clients receive their Certified Nursing

Assistant status along with one Certified Phlebotomist and a former Fair

Havens resident completed her Bachelor’s degree from UTPB. Our clients

are truly ‘learning’ a new way of life through the ‘significant relationships’

they build while living at Midland Fair Havens.

Gary Kahler, dear and treasured friend of Midland Fair Havens, passed away peacefully January 2, 2011,

after a courageous battle with cancer. Gary and his precious wife Linda, began Kahler Homes and

worked together building homes for families since 1978. Their two dear children, Caribe and Aaron grew up in

Midland and brought much joy to their lives. Gary liked hunting, being outdoors, restoring and racing cars, and

greater still he loved helping others.

Fair Havens was blessed by the offer of Gary Kahler to serve as our Construction Superintendent for the

Administration Building and the apartments, and to have the Texas Baptist Men volunteer six weeks of their time

towards the framing effort. Gary lovingly completed the project in the fall of 2004 and as a result an average

of over 400 families are ministered to each year residentially and non-residentially. In many cases, their lives

are changed eternally. We are so very grateful for the way Christ’s love shined through Gary to help this ministry

touch countless lives. Gary’s daily testimony of honoring God with his life, his words and his deeds, will always

be very evident here at Midland Fair Havens.
