World Class Care Close to Home After weeks of unexplained numbness spreading through her body, a frightened

Kara McKenna was admitted to Lakewood Hospital’s Neuro Integrated Care Unit

in February.

The young, healthy mother of two, along with her husband KC, knew something

was extremely wrong and braced for a life-altering diagnosis as she underwent

testing to rule out multiple sclerosis, ALS, brain and spinal tumors.

Lakewood Hospital’s neurology team analyzed spinal fluid to reveal that Kara had

contracted Guillain-Barré Syndrome (GBS); a serious and rare disorder where a

person’s own immune system damages their nerve cells, causing muscle

weakness and sometimes paralysis.

Kara, 34, luckily had a mild case but one that still required 18 days in the hospital

including a week of focused physical and occupational therapy. After her release,

she also completed several weeks of outpatient therapy at the hospital.

“Along the way, every doctor, every nurse, every hospital employee was amazing.

I can’t say enough positive things about everyone that I interacted with during my

stay,” says Kara, who now only reports slight lingering numbness in her fingertips.

“They became my friends – many of them were young moms like me who not

only understood how scared I was about the pain, but the hardship of being away

from my husband and kids.”

Looking back on their unexpected medical emergency, the McKenna family

says the one constant, calming factor during this tumultuous time was being able

to receive the best medical care and have complete access to the expertise,

caregivers and knowledge resources of the Cleveland Clinic, right in their own

community and in a place they felt comfortable.

“Our whole life centers around Lakewood so it meant a lot that I was able to

receive my medical treatment close to home and in an environment that offered

a small hospital feel despite being part of a much larger institution,” says Kara,

whose mother, Carol Double, works as a nursing operations manager at the

hospital. “If I had been admitted downtown, there was no way I could have

seen my family as often as I did at Lakewood Hospital.”

Although the McKenna family resides in Fairview Park, both have jobs in

Lakewood – Kara is senior art director at Rosenberg Advertising and KC is vice

president of admissions and marketing at St. Edward High School. Additionally,

their young sons – Henry, 4, and Roger, 2, both born at Lakewood Hospital –

now attend Lakewood Child Care Center, which is located on the hospital campus.

“This worked out especially well as I could see the boys frequently. On the days

I was able, the nurses would make accommodations for me to be transported to

the hospital atrium by wheelchair and KC would go to the day care and bring the

boys over for a short visit,” she says, adding that the hospital room was too scary

for them. “That meant so much to me.”

More than 430 individuals have received help with their diabetes

medication and blood sugar testing supplies since Lakewood Hospital

and Marc’s Pharmacy joined forces to create an innovative assistance

program in 2009.

The highly successful program, known as the Diabetes Assistance

Initiative (DAI), is the only one of its kind in Northeast Ohio.

The program is designed to serve individuals who are uninsured, underinsured

without coverage of needed diabetes medications or supplies and high co-payments,

or Medicare beneficiaries who are in the coverage gap, commonly referred to as

the donut hole. Once qualified, participants are given a voucher for their medications

and supplies that can be redeemed at any Marc’s Pharmacy. The average monthly

voucher is $500-$1,000 per person.

“Since the start, the DAI has been a true partnership between our organizations,

driven by our joint desire to provide participants with something they were lacking –

the ability to access and afford their diabetes medications and testing supplies,”

said Gina Gavlak, diabetes program development coordinator for Lakewood Hospital’s

Diabetes and Endocrine Center.

“As a locally owned and operated company, Marc’s Pharmacy is committed to giving

back to our customers and the community,” said Melenie Petropoulos, vice president

of pharmacy operations at Marc Glassman, Inc. “We are an avid supporter of

Lakewood Hospital and the care they provide. We are extremely proud of

this partnership.”

Petropoulos said it was a collaborative effort to develop a program that would have

an immediate and positive impact on patients. “The DAI has been a life-changing

experience for participants. Many of our pharmacists have witnessed firsthand the

appreciation from our customers with diabetes who desperately need these supplies

and simply want the opportunity to get, stay and live well.”

C O R P O R AT E PA R T N E R S P O T L I G H T Marc’s Pharmacy

“With our help, patients have been able to achieve improved blood glucose control,

change behaviors, learn how to problem-solve, reduce risks, and develop healthy

coping skills,” she commented.

“The DAI has been a win for everyone involved. The program is improving health

outcomes and creating healthier families and healthier communities,” said Gavlak.

Gavlak noted that due to limited funding, the program has been unable to accept new

participants over the past few years because of their commitment to supporting those

already accepted for as long as they need. “This allows us to ensure that participants

actually have the diabetes medicine and testing supplies they need on a daily basis

and aren’t forced to ration or skip their doses or go longer between testing their

blood sugar.”

Marc’s Pharmacy is also a corporate sponsor of Starry Night, a primary source of

funding of the DAI. In addition, the company generously donates the Giving Tree,

which is loaded with $1,000 in gift cards to a myriad of local and national retailers

and eateries, and raffled at the event.

C O N T R I B U T I O N S AT W O R K A Different Kind of Therapy An elderly woman’s grasp of reality had slipped.

She became agitated, and cried out again and

again. Staff members were unable to calm her.

When small children are upset, you give them

something to cuddle. The woman was given a

stuffed dog. She clutched the animal instinctively,

and immediately became calm and relaxed.

It seemed therapeutic.

You won’t read about stuffed or doll therapy in any medical journal. But the nurses

and aides on Lakewood Hospital’s Senior Behavioral Health unit liberally apply the

unique treatment with their elderly patients, many who suffer from mental

deterioration or loneliness.

This medication for the soul is dispensed freely thanks to funding from Lakewood

Hospital Foundation. Through a grant made possible from the annual Ambulance

Chase, soft and cuddly stuffed animals, as well as life-like baby dolls have been

purchased for the unit. After other methods have failed to cheer up or calm a patient,

staff members reach for a stuffed critter or doll.

‘’Many of our patients suffer from Alzheimer’s and senility,’’ says Jane Burandt,

Senior Behavioral Health Program Manager. ‘’They go back to their own childhood

where they think that this is their first baby doll or a pet, and they light up. These may

be just toys to us, but to many of our patients they are true companions.”

Many elderly hospital patients have precious little to distract them. These dolls and

animals may be able to reduce anxiety by giving those with dementia a sense of

caring for something or their presence may bring back memories of taking care

of a child.

Several studies have shown that interactions with a stuffed animal or baby doll

increase happiness and provide a calming effect, and have even helped reduce

medication use. It’s also a great way to allow patients, who often have to rely on

everyone else for care, the perceived ability to once again care for something

on their own.

The dolls and animals are always offered to patients in such a manner that does

not diminish the dignity of a grown adult. Most families are pleased and surprised

at their loved one’s attachment to a baby doll or stuffed animal, many wishing

they had thought of this touch of nostalgia themselves.

‘’We had a patient who was overly active so we gave him a baby doll,’’ Burandt

says. ‘’He picked it up and just kept looking at it. Pretty soon he was kissing and

cradling it. He calmed down. When you see something like that, you get a lump

in your throat. We’ve all been touched watching the reactions of our patients.’’

When patients are discharged from the unit, their pet or baby doll usually goes

with them. And some of the stuffed friends have even come back as their

owner returns for extra care.

Lakewood Hospital’s Senior Behavioral Health unit offers integrated, comprehensive behavioral health services to patients ages 55 and older. Our team of trained professionals is dedicated to improving and maintaining the behavioral health and well-being of patients in the communities we serve. For more information, contact Jane Burandt at [email protected] or 216.227.2463.

This year’s Starry Night festivities kicked off with a perfect summer evening and

over 550 guests who helped raise more than $130,000 in proceeds that will directly

benefit the Diabetes Assistance Initiative, a program of the Lakewood Hospital

Diabetes and Endocrine Center.

Continually recognized as one of the West Side’s best street parties, guests dined

on an impressive array of gourmet cuisine while enjoying live entertainment, including

the Doug Day Quartet and a psychic. Kris Pickel of WKYC-TV3 graciously served as

the Mistress of Ceremonies and led the evening with exciting raffle drawings including

the Choose your own Adventure Travel, the Giving Tree featuring $1,000 in retail

gift cards, and the Slam Dunk Raffle for two courtside tickets to a Cleveland

Cavaliers game.

The Diabetes Assistance Initiative is completely funded through philanthropy and was

established to help provide diabetes testing supplies, medications and self-management

education for individuals who are unable to afford this life-saving support.

Be sure to mark your calendars and join us as we celebrate our 10th Annual Starry Night on Friday, July 31, 2015.

He’s a hero, she’s a hero – our caregivers are heros too! It’s no secret that all members of the Lakewood Hospital family are dedicated

to providing and facilitating expert, compassionate care for our patients and their

families. Given the enormous impact they have on those who trust Lakewood

Hospital at their most vulnerable of times, they are often considered heroes.

And in the true spirit of a hero, the abundance of hope, generosity and healing

across Lakewood Hospital doesn’t just stop with patient care.

That’s where the hospital’s annual H.E.R.O. Campaign comes in. During its

nine years in existence, the H.E.R.O. Campaign (which stands for Hospital

Employees Reaching Out) has allowed Lakewood Hospital employees to further

demonstrate their compassion for others through generous personal gifts.

Much of the money raised has been directed to the hospital’s Employee Care

Fund, which provides confidential emergency aid for employees facing a

personal financial crisis due to a catastrophic situation.

“We know the spirit of giving lives at Lakewood

Hospital and our employees are passionate about

supporting the life-saving work happening around

them each day,” Interim Hospital President

Shannan Ritchie proudly states. “One of the

benefits of being part of this hospital family is

that we not only take care of our patients -

we take care of each other.”

To kick-off the 2014 campaign, all hospital

employees and volunteers enjoyed a “caregiver

thank you” with a midday visit to the ice cream

truck or midnight delivery of popcorn treats.

“ ”My only support network is my job and my

friends at work … I have no family. When

I needed help, the Employee Care Fund was

there. I feel so privileged and honored to be

an employee at Lakewood Hospital.

Meet Nancy and Bill Huffman. This vibrant, community-minded Westlake couple

continues a legacy of giving time and treasure to Lakewood Hospital that spans

three generations and dates back to the 1960s when Bill’s grandmother, Ida,

volunteered at what was then a city-run institution.

“The Huffman family and Lakewood Hospital go way back,” says Nancy,

a Lakewood Hospital Foundation trustee since 2011.

Bill grew up in Lakewood and watched his parents, Carol and Chuck Huffman,

follow in his grandmother’s footsteps, donating their time and financial support

to Lakewood Hospital. Carol, a registered nurse, was a member of the hospital’s

Junior Board, volunteered at the gift shop and served 17 years on the hospital

foundation board before being recognized as a Lifetime Honorary Trustee in 2006.

Chuck, an attorney, served on Lakewood City Council and chaired the hospital

committee.

After suffering a stroke in 2007, Carol was admitted to Lakewood Hospital and

required weeks of inpatient rehabilitation. This life-changing experience spurred the

Huffmans to accelerate their planned contribution to the hospital instead of making

it part of their will as originally intended. A portion of their generous gift was used

to purchase a NuStep recumbent cross-trainer for the hospital’s comprehensive

Neurological Outpatient Program, the very program that Carol benefited from

as a patient.

And when Carol passed away two years ago, the family graciously asked friends

and family to earmark memorials to the hospital.

Following in his parents’ footsteps, Bill and Nancy now include Lakewood Hospital

as one of their charitable giving priorities. In recognition of their continued support,

they will be welcomed this fall as members of the foundation’s Founder’s Council,

which acknowledges a milestone in cumulative giving.

P R O F I L E I N G I V I N G Nancy and Bill Huffman

As a foundation trustee, Nancy thoroughly embraces her role as a hospital

ambassador and encourages others to remember Lakewood Hospital when they

make their end-of-year charitable donations.

“Bill also had life-saving surgery many years ago at Lakewood Hospital,” she said

about the removal of a portion of her husband’s colon at the young age of 24.

“Lakewood Hospital has been there for our family,” says Bill, who worked at the

hospital while in college. “We have always received good care and consider it our

home hospital. We hope Lakewood Hospital continues to serve patients for many

more generations to come.”

Nancy, who also serves on the foundation’s Advancement Committee, said the

couple was happy to spend their 33rd wedding anniversary at Starry Night, an event

held in early August to raise funds for the hospital’s Diabetes Assistance Initiative.

Even with their active and widespread community involvement, the Huffmans

continue to keep Lakewood Hospital and their family’s ongoing legacy of giving

a priority in their lives.

Lakewood Hospital Foundation is guided by a dedicated and civic-minded board

of trustees whose role is to support the enhancement of hospital programs and

services through building relationships with members of the community, raising

funds and dedicating resources to help meet the needs of those served by the

hospital. Michael A. Carlin recently joined this group of committed advocates

for Lakewood Hospital, and Richard B. Freeman, MD, PhD was honored as

an Honorary Lifetime Trustee.

Mike brings extensive financial management and business advisory expertise

from over 40 years of professional services for publically held and privately owned

companies across an array of industries. His executive background, coupled

with over 30 years of controller and audit committee experiences, rounds out

the 23-member board. He is currently the Managing Director of Carolan Partners

LLC, that provides corporate finance advisory services to financial services

companies. Prior to founding the company, Mike held leadership positions

as a senior client service partner with Deloitte & Touche LLP.

Mike grew up in Lakewood and is a graduate of St. Edward High School

where he previously served as a trustee. He is currently on the Board of

Advisors for a privately held manufacturing company, and is a member of

the American Institute and Ohio Society of Certified Public Accountants.

In appreciation for his significant contributions to the foundation and hospital,

Rick Freeman was named Honorary Lifetime Trustee. During his 29 years of

service on the Board of Trustees, he served in various leadership capacities

and was instrumental in the ultimate success of several strategic endeavors.

PA R T N E R S I N P H I L A N T H R O P Y Board Highlights

“Rick is an outstanding volunteer and a very generous donor,” said Ken Haber,

president of the Lakewood Hospital Foundation Board of Trustees. “His many

years of service as a trustee and his deep commitment to the foundation have

helped strengthen our efforts on behalf of those served by Lakewood Hospital.”

Pam Berry retired from the board after 22 years of dedicated service.

Colleen Meredith was elected as secretary. Our thanks to Board of Trustees

member Tom Baker who has expertly filled this role over the past three years.

Doug Spiker is the new Governance Committee Chair replacing

Mary Anne Crampton who is stepping down from the role.

Finally, the Lakewood Hospital family fondly remembers our dear friend and ardent

supporter, Brian M. King, who passed away July 8. Brian’s passion for Lakewood

Hospital was long-standing and unwavering as evidenced by his service as a

Lakewood Hospital Foundation trustee for nearly 30 years – including a six-year

term as president – and as a hospital trustee, and patient. We were fortunate

to have been blessed by Brian’s friendship and generosity, which so enriched

the community.

More than 1,050 people came together on May 4, in support of patient care at

Lakewood Hospital. From toddlers in the Children’s Chase to walk participants well

into their eighties, the 13th Annual Ambulance Chase attracted folks from all over

Ohio and as far away as Oregon. 5K winners were Mallory Shaw, 15, of Lakewood

with a time of 19:23, and Curt Bachus, 48, of Akron with a time of 17:32. Of the 28

teams participating, Team Pfahl was the largest with 90 participants, and Garfield

Elementary School was a close second with 83 members.

Donald Martens & Sons Ambulance Services once again partnered with Lakewood

Hospital Foundation to host the 5K Race/Walk & 1 Mile Walk, something they have

32,644,444 Steps and Counting… Celebrating 13 years of Running, Walking, Wellness, Community Spirit and Support of Lakewood Hospital

done since the inception of the event. “It is because of their generosity, and that of

many other sponsors, that the Ambulance Chase continues to be such a success,”

notes event co-chair Chas Geiger.

Patients and caregivers benefit from the funds raised. The Ambulance Chase Grant

Program provides Lakewood Hospital departments the opportunity to request

funds in support of service enhancement and equipment that enriches patient care.

Through the grants, more than $475,000 has been awarded for numerous initiatives,

including 18 projects funded this year.

C O N T R I B U T I O N S AT W O R K Alzheimer’s Research Worth Watching [ An estimated 5.2 million Americans have Alzheimer’s disease. ]

Lakewood Hospital’s Center for Brain Health is currently one of seven sites in

the United States and Israel participating in a clinical trial for patients with mild to

moderate Alzheimer’s disease. The non-invasive therapeutic process is as simple

as sitting in a chair – actually, a state-of-the-art chair that simultaneously applies

cognitive training and transcranial magnetic stimulation to targeted areas of the

brain affected by the disease.

“Interim findings have been remarkable,” says Lakewood Hospital Research

Coordinator Christine Whitman. “Use of the NeuroAD medical device system has

improved cognition after therapy and even months after the study completion.”

Tests have shown significant improvement to patients’ cognitive functions.

Daily activities, such as taking care of themselves, speaking, and even recognizing

their loved ones have improved dramatically.

Currently, there is no cure for Alzheimer’s disease. Though there are drugs that can

relieve some of the symptoms, the benefit usually diminishes within six to nine

months of treatment. The NeuroAD, which can be used in conjunction with these

therapies, has a demonstrated impact as well as long-term results.

Whitman notes this new and novel technological approach really puts patients first,

“It is safe, non-invasive, and painless.”

The NeuroAD is considered an investigational

device and not commercially available in

the United States; however, it is being

used throughout Europe in combination

with Alzheimer’s disease medication.

“This far exceeds what is currently

available with medications alone,”

added Whitman. “New ideas and

advancements for treatment

which show such promise

are very rare, so we are

very optimistic.”

Lakewood Hospital’s involvement in the

NeuroAD trial is made possible through a portion of the

$1 million gift from The Harold C. Schott Foundation that was used to establish

an endowment in support of the expansion and integration of the hospital’s

neurological and geriatric services.

Enrollment in this clinical trial at the Center for Brain Health at Lakewood Hospital continues through the end of 2014. For more information, call 216.227.2438.
