It was very exciting last Wednesday nightto see everything that is happening at ourchurch. The 5-Star Dinners are a great
opportunity for mid-week fellowship, and we have anexcellent lineup of fall classes including "Galatians" with
Michael Whittington, "The Jesus Way" with Beth Pattillo andSandy Smith, "Heart Healthy Living" with Anna Tinkle,"DivorceCare" with Anne Stauffer and Janet Wall, and"Daystar Parenting" with David Thomas and SissyGoff. Woodmont is a busy place on Wednesday nights, andthat is a good thing. This week, Sissy Goff of Daystar willbe back to present on the topic "Taming the TechnologyMonster." The goal is to help parents navigate through thechallenges of raising kids in our digital age. Technology nowpresents a whole new set of challenges to parents that simplywere not there a decade ago. But the theme of this classstruck me because not only is it relevant to parents raising
children, it is relevant to every single one of us. We all haveto tame the technology monster in our own lives and keepit under control. Technology is constantly changing andevolving. There are new gadgets coming out every day. Weknow that email, text messaging, social media, and theinternet make life convenient in many ways. We also knowthat it's really hard to turn them off. Here are some of thedangers that I see.
1. A growing sense of anxiety and restlessnessbecause we are constantly available andexpected to reply right away
2. A complete loss of boundaries; work is not leftat the office3. A shortage of face to face interaction and
conversation4. Difficulty being present in the moment without
being distracted5. Lashing out via email when emotions run high6. Unhealthy addiction to the latest technology7. A false belief that social media is an acceptable
substitute for other types of community8. Children and adults gaining easy access to
pornography
9. Constant web surfing that leads to a lack ofproductivity at work and at home10. Growing individualization and a decline in
spiritual growth and reflection
Don't get me wrong, I could write another article about themany advantages of technology and how it makes our liveseasier and more convenient. But I worry more about thedangers that are present if we do not keep it in check. It is
truly a double edged sword. We live in an age of informatioverload and people do become numb to getting constantbombarded with updates and information. News travefaster than it ever has before, yet because we know so mucit doesn't seem to affect us the same way it used to. T
secret to taming the technology monster is to set limits, know when to turn it off. The secret is to let technoloassist our lives but not run our lives. Setting boundaries hnever been as important as it is today. Remember, therestill something very holy and profound about turning tphone off and taking the time to be still, to be quiet, and connect with God. When was the last time you took technology Sabbath, or just a few hours away from yosmart phone?
Strategic Planning Committee
Wants Your InputAs the strategic planning committee continues to meet th
fall to talk about the future, we will be seeking the input the congregation. We are working on a survey that will sent out to the membership but in the meantime, help begin to think about the future. Please begin to reflect upquestions like: What would you like to see Woodmont do the future in terms of ministry and outreach? What curreministry areas need to be expanded? What are the facillimitations at our church? Since South Hall seems to maxed out in terms of the outreach ministries that it housewhat should our plan be? Be looking for a survey that will
sent out in the coming weeks. This group values the input everybody in the congregation and we want to hear from many people as possible.
Blessings,
Taming the Technology Monsterby Rev. Clay Stauffer, Senior Minister

Our granddaughter started preschool at Woodmont last month. On her first day Lulah's mother something worth sharing: she took a picture. For many it will simply be a photo of a little girl on her first dof school. For others it may have a more profound meaning. Here is the picture:
Tom Mathias was a hero of mine. Tom was my hero because he knew how to do things. Tom was my hero because he whumble. Tom was my hero because he treated people with respect. Tom was my hero because "he served the Lord wgladness."
In this photograph Lulah is sitting on a sturdy concrete bench that the Woodmont Christian Preschool had constructed in memory. Someone had the intuition to place her on this bench to etch a lasting memory. Amen!
Some day in the not-so-distant future our granddaughter will see this picture. Whenever it is, I hope that Lulah pebeyond her own image and sees the words carved in the stone that is supporting her.
Go and do the same, little darling
All the love,Dutch

We have 14 amazing youth sponsors signed up to lead the youth group this year. Please join us in thanking our youthsponsors as they give their time and talents to the 6th-12th grade youth in our church. This week, please take some extratime to celebrate and get to know Rob Cochran.
Rob and his wife, Ellen, have been members of Woodmont since they were knee high to atadpole. Rob and Ellen have two daughters, Lindsey an archeologist in Florida and Rachel a
graphic artist in New York City, and a son, Taylor, who is a man about town in Chicago. As anarchitect and general contractor, Rob draws pictures of buildings and then tries to make the
buildings look like the pictures. We all pretty much have a bunch of fun. Amen.
