Driven by the industrysneed for safe, effectivesealing solutions forincreasingly demandingapplications, Flexitallicinvented the spiralwound gasket in 1912.
SPIRAL WOUNDGASKETS
First and ForemostThe concept of spiral wound gasketconstruction was originated by Flexitallicin 1912, starting a new era in safe, effective sealing. The primary purpose for this development was the increasinglysevere temperatures and pressures usedby U.S. refinery operators in the first halfof the 20th century.
The necessity for a gasket to have the ability to recover cannot be overemphasised. The effects of pressure and temperature fluctuations, thetemperature differential across the flange face, together with bolt stressrelaxation and creep, demand a gasketwith adequate flexibility and recovery to maintain a seal even under these varying service conditions. The Flexitallic Spiral Wound Gasket is the precisionengineered solution to such problems, meeting the most exacting conditions of both temperature and pressure inflanged joints and similar assemblies and against virtually every knowncorrosive and toxic media.

GASKETIDENTIFICATION
Metallic WindingMaterials The metallic winding material is designated by a solid colouridentification around the outside edge of the centering ring.
Non Metallic FillersThe gasket fillermaterials are designatedby a number of stripesplaced at equal intervalsaround the outside edgeof the centering ring.

Gaskets are colour coded to help expedite the selection and identity of the gaskets you need. The colour on the outside edge of the centering ring identifies both the winding and filler materials. The metallic winding material is designated by a solid colour. The filler materials are designated bycolour stripes at equal intervals on the outside edge of the centering ring. Flexitallic colour codingmeets the industry standard for metal and filler materials listed in ASME B16.20.

GASKETMATERIALS
NOTESFigures stated are for information only. Please refer to the current version of the original standards for dimensional information.Selected materials should be compatible with operating temperature and chemicals. If in doubt, contact Flexitallic Technical Department. We recommend a max continuous operating temperature of 260oC, above this decomposition starts to occur slowly, increasing rapidly above 400oC (750oC)

Thermiculite, FLEXITALLICSproprietary high-temperature,sealing material is comprised of chemically exfoliated andthermally exfoliated vermiculite.
This revolutionary patentedproduct simulates the structure of exfoliated graphite but with onenotable exception... gaskets madewith Thermiculite maintain theirintegrity, even at extremetemperatures.
Thermiculite is thermally stable, ensuring against thermaloxidation, at temperatures inexcess of 1000oC (Thermiculite 835).

NOTES: Where style R gaskets are fitted it is essential that the flange is correctly dimensioned to provide a compression stop, as over compression can result in failure.
RecommendedGasket StyleFor general duties
RecommendedGasket StyleFor high pressure/temperature duty, also for gaskets withPTFE filler, corrosive or fluctuating pressureor temperature serviceconditions.
Style CG Is comprised of asealing element and outer metalring. The outer ring assists inlocating the gasket on the matingflange faces and prevents overcompression of the sealing element ensuring optimum sealingperformance. Style CG gaskets aresuitable for use on raised and flatfaced flanged connections. Style CGgaskets are suitable for use in mildto moderate service conditions.
Style CGI In addition to an outermetal ring the CGI style gasket is fittedwith an inner metal ring, constrainingthe sealing element on both internaland external diameters. The inner ringfunctions as an addition
