THIRTIETH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME OCTOBER 24, 2021
As Jesus was leaving Jericho with his
disciples and a sizable crowd,
Bartimaeus, a blind man, the son of
Timaeus, sat by the roadside begging.
On hearing that it was Jesus of
Nazareth, he began to cry out, saying,
"Jesus, son of David, have pity on me."
Even if we have never suffered physical blindness, we
can all appreciate the concept of spiritual blindness.
How awful it must be to go through life not knowing
that God loves you, offers you forgiveness and
friendship, and invites you to become a child of God
forever! Every time we celebrate Mass, we participate
in the self-offering of Jesus Christ, God the Son, to
God the Father for the salvation of the world. Jesus,
the Light of the World, wants us to “do this in
memory of me” so that his offering of merciful love
will dispel spiritual blindness, fill us with his divine life
(called ‘grace’), and call down mercy upon sinners
throughout the world.
Over the next few weekends, we will focus on different parts of the Mass so that we can better
understand and participate in these mysteries of our
salvation. This also helps us to feel more confident
when we seek to explain our faith to others and invite
them to seek the Light of Christ. This weekend, our
focus is on the Introduction to Mass: all that
happens from the opening hymn until the Collect, the
prayer that we use to “collect” our intentions before
we are seated to listen to the readings. To be honest,
our preparation begins even before we come to
church. Good practices include:
Taking time to confess our sins regularly (to make
room in our hearts for Jesus)
Fasting one hour before receiving Holy Communion,
Reviewing the readings in advance (they are
published each week in the bulletin)
Coming a few minutes early to recollect ourselves
There are even prayers before and after Holy
Communion printed in the back of the hymnals for
you to use.
As we enter church we bless ourselves with the Sign
of the Cross, genuflect toward the Tabernacle (where
Jesus awaits us in the Holy Eucharist), and remind
ourselves in those actions that Jesus is Lord of our
lives. As life is a spiritual journey toward Heaven,
Mass begins and ends with a procession. After
Fr. Gordon
beginning in song, making the Sign of the Cross
together and exchanging a greeting, we humbly
confess that we are sinners and glorify God’s mercy
by singing the Gloria. In confessing our sinfulness
often we use the words, “Lord, have mercy” (Kyrie
eleison). Kyrie eleison is Greek, not Latin, which
reminds us that our original liturgical language—as
well as the New Testament of the Bible—is Greek.
Lastly, we “collect” our intentions in prayer and then
are seated to hear God’s Word. All of this takes less
than 5 minutes, and yet how we begin profoundly
influences the quality of our prayer! More to come
next week….
Volunteers Needed: The St Vincent de Paul Society at St. John is seeking volunteers from the STA/SJSC

Spirit of God, fill us with your Love
Saturday, Nov. 6 UNBOUND - A One Day Retreat
for all Parishioners
Despite our best efforts, many of us struggle with the
same sins time and again, leaving us feeling hopeless in
our search for freedom. Unbound lays out a strategy
to overcome Satan’s influence in your life and how to
live in the freedom of God’s plan for you.
Participants will learn how to respond to the good
news of the gospel and apply the truth to their lives.
Learn the five keys which help us respond to the
grace that unlocks the door and sets us free.
1. Repenting of sin and expressing faith in Jesus.
2. Forgiving oneself and others.
3. Renouncing the lies, spirits, and tactics of Satan.
4. Taking authority over the works of Satan.
5. Receiving the Father’s blessing.
The retreat was developed by Neal Lozano who
founded HeartoftheFather.com. You will come away
with your faith enlivened and concrete ways to respond to the good news of the gospel. Every
blessing the Father spoke to Jesus now belongs to
YOU.
The cost is $40 and includes a continental breakfast,
lunch and materials. You can register online or in
either parish office. Questions? Contact Jen Brown
at [email protected] or 517-351-5460.

VOLUNTEERS NEEDED TO PREPARE MEALS

Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults
This Sunday the inquirers and
their sponsors learned what
Catholics believe about Mary
and the saints. They were able to ask their questions
and clear up some misconceptions about Catholic
beliefs. Mary is a model of a disciple's total response
to God. The saints are people who have followed the will of God by doing ordinary things in an
extraordinary way. They come from every age group,
occupation, era, and vocation in life. They are models
for us and intercede for us with God in heaven.
Next, the inquirers and their sponsors explored the
Catholic understanding of heaven, hell, and
purgatory. They learned that Catholics regard death
as a comma, not a period. Death is a moment of
transformation when a person begins a whole new
way of life. God's love for us is total and
unconditional but the choices we make to be giving or
selfish determine how we will spend eternity.
Heaven is a dynamic life spent in the presence of God,
who is total love. If we enter eternity as a totally
selfish individual, completely consumed by sin, we will
be alone with our selfishness, unable to enjoy the
total love of God. That is hell.
For many, if not most people, death comes at a time
when there is some trace of selfishness and sin within
them. In order for them to be totally united to the
God of love, they need to be purified of any remaining
elements of sinfulness. This is purgatory. Even while
a person is undergoing the purifying experience of
purgatory, knowing that they are not yet totally
united with the Lord, there is a good deal of
happiness because the individual knows for certain
they will be.
This session was summed up by a quote from
St. Francis de Sales: “Life is for seeking God. Death is
the moment when we find God. Eternity is the
possession of God."
If you have been thinking about exploring your
interest in the Catholic Church, or if you know
someone who has mentioned this possibility, call Pete
Ries at 517-351-5460 or [email protected].

Mondays 7:00-9:00pm November 8 - December 6
The Mass is nothing short of amazing. Through it, we encounter God in the most intimate way possible as
we hear him speak to us in the Liturgy of the Word
and as we receive him Body and Blood, Soul and
Divinity in the Holy Eucharist
Join Katrina Iamarino for a bible study entitled a
"Biblical Walk Through the Mass." In this video-
based study featuring Dr. Edward Sri, we will explore
the roots of the words and gestures we experience
at Mass.
For in-person, we’ll be at St. Thomas Aquinas Parish
in Father Mac Hall, Mondays from 7:00-9:00pm,
beginning November 8 and ending December 6.
And like last year, we will also offer remote
participation through the Parish Facebook Page.
If you would like to register, please visit
elcatholics.org/biblestudy. Online registration is
preferred, you may also register by calling Dian in
the parish office at 517-351-5460. The deadline to
register is November 1.

Jesus and the Church teach us about All Saints Day and All Souls Day
Friday, November 12 | 9:30am - 3:00pm Hosted by Tony Sprendi
Some may say “I know about all of that stuff.” But all
souls day can happen to all of us at any time of the
year. So it’s best to be ready for it “for we know not
the day nor the hour of our death.” And that’s where
learning about becoming a saint can help us a lot so
we can be ready to meet the Lord face to face. Know
your identity as a son or daughter of God our Father.
The day will include morning snacks, coffee, prayer
and meditation, Mass, lunch and talks where everyone
can participate. Bring your spiritual journal and Bible.
The Book & Gift Shop will be available to you. The
cost of the retreat is $70 and $65 for seniors 60+.
