Annual Report (2015-2016)

We the student members of SPIE student chapter NIT Warangal herewith submitting the

annual report for the duration of 1st March 2015 to 1st March 2016.

National Institute of technology Warangal SPIE Student chapter is celebrating its 10th year.

Since its inspection in 2005 the chapter was really enthusiastic in various academic activities. In

this year we have succeeded in joining new the SPIE members. At present the chapter has 45

members and 4 alumni members. The chapter members are currently working in the areas of

Fiber optic sensors, Bio Photonics, Nano Photonics, Thin films, Biomedical ceramic glasses,

Electronics and Instrumentation, Photonic crystal waveguides, OLEDs, Nano materials, Thin

Film Electroluminescent Devices, soft condensed matter Physics, Bio polymer degradation

studied, which are irradiated by Gamma and electron beam sources etc. All the members of the

chapter are actively participating in the programs organized by the chapter and Department of

Physics. Current year the following activities were carried out by the SPIE student chapter

NITW.

Activities

1) “Optics outreach” an Youth education programme-I on 1st of August,2016

2) Participation in SPIE Student chapter leadership workshop and SPIE Optics and

Photonics conference on 8th August 2015 held at San Diego, under SPIE officers

.

Activity-I

“Optics Outreach” programme-I

A one day work shop on “Light Based Technologies” under “Optics Outreach”

programme was conducted in the month of August, 2015, at MVSR Engineering College,

Nadergul, Hyderabad, which is located 100 km away from National Institute of

Technology-Warangal. The aim of this activity is to give awareness about the current

application of light based technologies in our daily day to day life and to motivate younger

student towards Optics and Photonics technologies.

Dr. Dinakar, has given a talk on “Basics of Optical Fiber Sensors”

Dr. Sourabh Roy has given a talk on “Advances on LED’s”

SPIE Student members interacted with the students and demonstrated the exhibits

related to LASERS and basic Optics.

graduates and under graduates of MVSR College.

Activity-II

Participation in SPIE Annual meeting-2015

Our SPIE chapter member Mr. Venkata Reddy.Mamidi participated in the SPIE annual

meeting held at San Diego, USA on 8th August 2015. They also participated in the Optics

and Photonics 2015 conference held at San Diego during 9th to 13th of August 2015.

During the conference they participated in various workshops organized by SPIE and

got the opportunity meet and discuss about their research interests with peer groups and

experts in the fields of advanced photonics technologies. He shared all his experiences

about the Leader ship workshop with all the SPIE members.

Activity-III

One-day workshop

The Chapter conducted a one day workshop on “Integrated Photonics Technology” in

the month of October, 2015. We got overwhelming response. Around 100 students

including graduate, postgraduates Students and faculty members from various engineering

and post graduate colleges attended the workshop. The workshop spanned over 5 sessions.

Refreshment and snacks also provided to student time by time during the workshop.

Inauguration:

Prof. M. Sydulu, Dean(Faculty welfare) has inaugurated the workshop by lightening the

traditional lamp along with the Guest speaker Dr. Soma VenuGopal Rao from ACRHEM,

University of Hyderabad , Dr. Sourabh Roy, SPIE faculty advisor, Prof. K.

Srimannarayana , Prof. L.R.G Reddy, HOD Department of Physics.

Session 1:

In the first session our chief guest speaker Dr. Soma VenuGopal Rao gave a talk on

“Integrated Photonics – Progress and challenges” which was very valuable for the

students and researchers who are working in the field of photonics and optics. He

discussed about the major difficulties in the field of manufacturing of small and lower

cost chips with the help of photonics.

Session 2:

In second session Prof. K. Srimannarayana has delivered a lecture on “Holography and

its applications”.

Lunch Session:

After finishing of first two sessions, lunch was provided to all attendees along

with the Speakers. In lunch session experts interacted with the attendees.

Session 3:

In third session professor R.L.N. Sai Prasad gave his talk on current working area “Sensors

and Detectors” mainly related to chemical sensors and pressure sensors.

Session 4:

In forth session prof. M. Sai Sankar gave his talk on “Laser and its Applications”.

Session 5:

In fifth session Dr. Sourabh Roy gave a talk on “Silicon Photonics”. Talk was

describing the use of photonics in manufacture of smaller size and low cost silicon chips

which is used in integrated circuits to make a low cost, small size and fast seed devices.

SPIE T-Shirt:

On the eve of International Year of Light (IYL), a special T-shirt was designed and

distributed to the SPIE Student members of NIT-Warangal. The shirt was inaugurated by

Prof. L.Ramgopal Reddy, Head of the Department of Physics.

Activity-IV

Technozion

“Technozion” is a popular annual technical fest being organized by National Institute of

Technology, Warangal. Technical students of various disciplines, High school students

from various Engineering colleges and Schools, all over India, come and showcase their

technical skills. SPIE Student chapter grabbed this opportunity to represent SPIE student

chapter activities and to advertise light based technologies. We have organized two events

“Maze Runner” which is based on explaining the basic principle of physics laws and an

exhibition “Expoelectonica” is also conducted for the students of high school and

undergraduates students explaining the basic understanding of principles of total internal

reflection, hologram and use of home auction with Bluetooth using arduino kit, design a

cube using LEDs and the basic principle behind a laser.

Banners of Technozion-15 events.

An event named “Lasertuzak” , is also organized by chapter students which was a

huge success during Technozion. All these events were conducted by SPIE chapter

along with the OSA chapter and Department of physics NIT Warangal.

Various exhibits being demonstrated by SPIE members to High School students in Technozion-2015.

Activity-V

“Optics Outreach” programme-II

A one day work shop on “Light Based Technologies” under “Optics Outreach”

programme was conducted on 30th January, 2015, at Silver Jubilee Government

College, Kurnool, Andhra Pradesh, which is located 300 km away from National

Institute of Technology-Warangal. Nearby high school students, and graduates from

various degree colleges were gathered at Silver Jubilee Government college. The aim of

this activity is to give awareness about the current application of light based

technologies in our daily day to day life and to motivate younger student towards Optics

and Photonics technologies.

Future plan of activities

SPIE Discussion forum-Monthly informal discussion on various current research

topics by the students

Optics Outreach: To disseminate the fundamental knowledge of various optical

phenomena of day to day life, we are planning to organize a Youth outreach

program in the month of September 2016.The main focus of the program is to

promote the optical knowledge to secondary school children. X standard students

from various schools will be gathered to a convenient place and concepts of light

will be explained with help of demonstrations, exhibits and lectures.

Industrial Tour: For the assimilation of the optical knowledge, to acclimatize the

industrial work culture, and to further the professional development of the students,

an industrial tour to a well reputed photonic industry is planned. SPIE chapter

members can get an in depth awareness of the industrial production of photonic

instruments by this event.

Industrial awareness program: We want to arrange an interaction program

between photonic industry people and science and technological students by this

event. Industrialists will give an awareness of the present industrial technical needs,

and skills to be adopted by the students. We are planning to gather technical

students of all disciplines from various academic Institutions and Industrial people

to a common platform to discuss and exchange their ideas and views.

A word of gratitude

We express our humble gratitude to the International Society for Optics and

Photonics (SPIE) for financial assistance, conference grant, officer’s travel grant,
