These electrical diagrams have beendesigned to make troubleshooting easier.Components which work together areshown together. For example, all electricalcomponents used in the Starter circuit areshown on one simple diagram. TheIGNITION SWITCHis shown at the top ofthe page. All wires, connectors, splices, switches, and motors are shown in the flowof current to ground at the bottom of thepage. Notes are included which describehow switches and other components work. For example, on the Courtesy Lightsdiagram the DRIVER'S DOOR JAMBSWITCH includes this note: "closed withdoor open." Switches and sensors areusually shown in the "at rest" position, as ifthe engine were warm but the IGNITIONSWITCH were "Off."

The Charge/Power Distribution diagramshows all connections from the BATI'ERYand GENERATOR to the IGNITIONSWITCH, LIGHT SWITCH and fuses. Ifyou combine the Charge/Power Distri-bution diagram with any other circuitdiagram, you will have a complete pictureof how the circuit gets its voltage and how

it works. Ground diagrams show howseveral circuits are connected to commongrounds.

The Circuit Operation description coversunusual features of each circuit. CircuitOperation also explains the flow of elec-tricity through each circuit from voltagesource to ground.

Read Troubleshooting for hints on how tofind the cause of the problem and repair it.Read the "If" statements and find the onewhich describes the problem you are work-ing on.

Component Location charts are includedonthe first page of circuit operation text foreach circuit. Use the Component Locationcharts to find electrical components on thecar. Each component is listed with adescription of where to find it on the car,

and a page/figure reference to a drawing orphoto.

General information is also included: 1)alist of electrical symbols and wiring connec-tions; 2) instruction in Electrical Trouble-shooting; 3)a Fuse Block drawing, and 4)atable giving conversions from metric toAmerican Wire Gage sizes.

other lead to the wire in question.2. If bulb goes on, there is a good ground.3. If bulb stays off, there is no ground.

    ELECTRICAL TROUBLESHOOTING

    GENERAL TROUBLESHOOTING HINTS

If several circuits fail at the same time, chances are the power (fuse) or groundcircuit is faulty.

Use the Fuse Block and ChargingSystem/Power Distribution information tofind out which circuits are powered througheach fuse.

Use the Ground Distribution diagrams tofind out which circuits have a commonground. Many car electrical problems aregrounding faults.

    CHARGE/POWER DISTRIBUTION

    CIRCUIT OPERATIONCharge

With the IGNITION SWITCH in "Run,"12volts are applied through the GRNwire,BRN wire, IGNITION SWITCH terminals30 and INT and the BATIERY CHARGEINDICATOR.If the ALTERNATOR is not working, current flows through the BATTERYCHARGE INDICATOR and the ALTER-NATOR D terminal to ground. The bulbgoes on.

If the ALTERNATOR is working, itpowers all car electrical equipment andcharges the BATIERY. Alternating currentis generated by the stator as the fieldrotates. The rectifier bridges change thealternating current to direct current. Equalvoltage is applied through terminal D tothe other side of the indicator bulb. Theindicator bulb does not go on.

The amount of DC voltage produced bythe ALTERNATOR is controlled by theregulator. When the ALTERNATORoutputvoltage is low, the regulator increasescurrent flowing through the field. Thisincreases the ALTERNATOR output

voltage (at terminal B ). Field current issupplied directly from the stator's outputthrough the diode trio.

    IGNITION

    CIRCUIT OPERATION

The Marelli Ignition System consists ofan IGNITION COIL, ELECTRONIC

    OCONTROL MODULE, and a BREAKER-

LESS DISTRIBUTOR. Power is availableto the IGNITION SYSTEM when theIGNITION SWITCHis in "Run" or "Start."

    Ignition Coil

Voltage is applied to the IGNITIONCOIL primary from the IGNITIONSWITCH. The coil current is regulated bythe ELECTRONIC CONTROL MODULE,which is triggered by the PICK-UPASSEMBLY. The PICK-UP ASSEMBLY

sends impulses to the module. At the startof each impulse, the module grounds theIGNITION COIL primary through the BLKwire and terminal W.Whenthe primary coilcircuit is switched "On," a strong magneticfield is developed across the primary coil.At the end of each impulse, the circuit isswitched "Off." The strong magnetic fieldcollapses and induces a high voltage in thesecondary coil. This high voltage isdistributed to spark plugs through the

distributor rotor and cap.Electronic Control Module

The module switches the IGNITIONCOIL'S primary circuit "On" and "Off." Itincorporates a constant current limiter toprevent damage to the coil primary circuit. The module also analyzes the impulsesfrom the distributor's pick-up assembly toprovide proper dwell time and spark timingregardless of engine rpm. The coil also

provides the rpm signal to the tachometer, and to the ELECTRONIC CONTROLUNIT (in cars with Fuel Injection).

    Breakerless Distributor

The distributor is driven by the camshaftof the engine. The distributor shaft has atrigger in place of a breaker cam. The

PICK-UP ASSEMBLY mounted in thedistributor is electrically connected to theELECTRONIC CONTROL MODULE.

    Pick-Up Assembly

The assembly consists of a pick-up coil,s tator pole, and a permanent magnet. Theassembly creates a magnetic field. Thetrigger has four teeth, 90 degrees'apart. Asa tooth passes through the magnetic field, itcauses an electrical impulse in the pick-up

coil. This impulse is fed to the ELEC-TRONIC CONTROL MODULE forcontrolling the coil primary circuit.

    TROUBLESHOOTING

NOTICE: The following Special Notesapply to the Marelli Electronic IgnitionSystem:

    - Do Not energize the ignition unless thecoil support base is properly grounded.

    - Do Not crank the engine with the coilwire disconnected;

    - Do Not disconnect the coil wire with theengine running.

    - Do Not start the engine with theinstrument cluster disconnected.

    - Do Not ground the coil lead to thetachometer (black wire), or usediagnostic equipment (or jumper wires)to ground the primary circuit.

    - Do Not test for current or voltage by"flashing" terminals to each other or toground.

    - The leads to the distr ibutor pick-upmaybe disconnected while the engine isrunning without damaging the system.

    - Do Not disconnect the battery cables

while the engine is running; althoughthe ignition system can withstand apeak of 300 volts (for a period ofmicroseconds), the charging system(alternator/ electronic voltage regulator)will be damaged.

IF STARTER CRANKS BUT ENGINEWILL NOT TURN OVER:

Check for 12V at terminal 16 of theIGNITION COIL.

Check for proper grounding of theIGNITION COIL support mounting usingan ohmmeter. Connect meter betweencoil

support mounting and negative terminalof battery. Resistance should read .2ohms or less .

Check IGNITION COIL resistance withohmmeter. First disconnect wires fromcoil. To measure primary coil, read

between terminal 16 and terminal D.Reading should be 0.75 to O.Bl ohms. Tomeasure secondary coil read betweenterminal D and output to distributor.Reading should be 10,000 to 11,000 ohms.

Check distributor pick-up coil. Removeconnector from the ELECTRONICCONTROL MODULE and, with anohmmeter, measure resistance of pick-upcoil. The reading between the pins of theconnector should be 700 to 800 ohms.

Then move one of the meter leads to thedistributor body to check pick-upinsulator. Meter should read infinity (00).

Check the gap between stator pole andthe teeth of the trigger with a non-magnetic feeler gauge. Reading should be0.020-0.024 in. (0.5 to 0.6mm).

Check the ELECTRONIC CONTROLMODULE. Should only be checked afterthe pick-up coil has been checked to begood.

WARNING: Use insulated pliers to holdHI-TENSION CABLE while testing forspark. A high voltage shock is possible.

Disconnect the HI-TENSION CABLEfrom the distributor cap. Posit ion the endof the cable approximately less than a 1/4of an inch from the engine block. Rotatethe engine manually and look for a sparkas each tooth of the trigger passes thepick-up. This check can also be made with

the distributor removed by manuallyrotating the distributor shaft .

    IDLE SHUTOFF(Carburetor System)

    CIRCUIT OPERATION

With the IGNITION SWITCH in "Start"or "Run," current flows through the IDLESHUTOFF SOLENOID to ground. Thesolenoid operates and allows fuel to flow inthe carburetor idle circuit. When theIGNITION SWITCH is turned to "Off," thesolenoid does not operate and fuel flow inthe idle circuit is shut off to preventdieseling.

    CIRCUIT OPERATIONWith Manual Transmission

Battery voltage is applied at all times toterminal 30 of the SOLENOID, andterminal 30 of the IGNITION SWITCH.

When the IGNITION SWITCHis movedto "Start," current flows through terminal50 of the SOLENOID, and both the hold-inand pull-in windings (to ground). The hold-in and pull-in windings work togethermagnetically to pull in the shifter. Currentthrough the pull-in winding also flowsthrough the MOTOR. The MOTOR beginsto turn slowlyto insure easy meshing ofthegear teeth. As the gears mesh, theSOLENOID contacts close. This applies fullbattery voltage directly to the MOTORthrough terminal 30.

When the IGNITION SWITCHis releasedfrom "Start," current from the IGNITIONSWITCH stops. Current from theBATTERY through the SQLENOIDcontacts now flows in the reverse directionthrough the pull-in winding, then continuesin normal direction through the hold-inwinding. The magnetic force of the hold-inwinding is opposed and cancelled by the

reverse current through the pull-in winding. The drive mechanism is spring-released andopens the SOLENOID contacts. Voltage tothe MOTOR is cut off.

    With Automatic Transmission

With automatic transmission, batteryvoltage is also applied to terminal 30of theSTARTER RELAY at all times. When theIGNITION SWITCH is moved to "Start" ,voltage is applied through the STARTERRELAY coil, GRY/RED wire, and RED

CIRCUIT OPERATIONThe Fuel Injection System senses the

amount of fuel needed for the properairlfuel mixture. The fuel is sprayed intothe air stream in the intake manifold. FuelInjection is made up ofthree major systems:

the fuel system, air system and electricalsystem.

A brief description of each major systemwill aid in understanding how the entireFuel Injection System operates electrically.

    Fuel System

The fuel system consists of four FUELINJECTORS, one for each cylinder. Theinjectors deliver pulses of fuel at the correctpressure to the intake manifold and arecontrolled by the ELECTRONIC CON-TROL UNIT (ECU).

The system also provides additional fuelfor coldstarting. This is done by the COLDSTART VALVE, which is controlled by theTHERMO TIME SWITCH. The COLDSTART VALVE operates with theIGNITION SWITCH in "Start" and theTHERMO TIME SWITCH closed.

    Air System

The air system measures the amount ofair drawn into the engine, as well as itstemperature, and provides this data to theECU as input signals. The system alsoprovides bypass air circuits for coldstarting.

The AIR FLOW SENSOR contains anAIR FLOW POTENTIOMETER, FUELPUMP SWITCH and an AIR TEMPER-ATURE SENSOR.

The AIR FLOW POTENTIOMETER islinked to a plate which senses air flow into

the engine. The potentiometer senses theposition of the plate and sends a voltagesignal to the ECU for fuel metering.

When air flow is present, the FUELPUMP SWITCH closes. This energizes thefuel pump relay coil. The relay contacts

close and the FUEL PUMP is operated. The AIR TEMPERATURE SENSOR

measures air temperature and provides aninput signal to the ECU. The ECU uses thesignal to adjust the amount of time eachFUEL INJECTOR is open (to compensatefor cold air intake).

The AUXILIARY AIR REGULATORcontrols air flow thru a bypass around thethrottle plate. This provides additional airduring cold starts and warm up. The ECUresponds to this additional air by meteringmore fuel to the engine, raising the idlespeed.

    Electrical System

The electrical system controls the flowoffuel in order to have the correct air/fuelratio for all operating conditions. The ECUreceivesthe input signals and computesthecorrect output signal to the control relay.

With the IGNITION SWITCHin "Start"or "Run," current flows through terminal86c of the FUEL INJECTION RELAYSET(relay set), the coil of the control relay, terminal 28 of the ECU to G7. The controlrelay contacts close. Current then flowsfrom the BATI'ERYthrough the contacts ofthe control relay, the FUEL INJECTORS,and the ECU to G7. Because the engine isnot yet running, there is no air flowand theFUEL PUMP SWITCH remains open.

With the IGNITION SWITCHin "Start,"current also flows through terminal 86a ofthe relay set and followsthree paths: 1)thecoil of the fuel pump relay, terminal 85,theECU to G7; 2)terminal 86, the control unit,to G8; and 3) terminal 86 to the COLDSTART VALVE and the THERMO TIMESWITCH.

Path 1 causes the contacts of the FUELPUMP RELAY to close.Current then flowsthrough C17 (from the BATI'ERY), theFUEL INJECTION IN-LINE FUSE, thecontacts\.of the relay, terminal 88d of therelay set,-the FUEL PUMP, to G5. Currentalso flows through terminal 88c ofthe relayset, the AUXILIARY AIR REGULATOR,the ECU, to G7.

Path 2 powers a start signal to the controlunit at terminal 4.The ECU is then allowedto ground the FUEL INJECTORS (throughG7), allowing them to operate.

Path 3 powers the COLDSTARTVALVEthrough the THERMO TIME SWITCH(when starting with the coolant tempera-ture below95F).The switch remains closedand the COLD START VALVE operates, until: 1)the coolant temperature goes above

95F; or 2) the current flow through theheater in the switch generates enough heatto open the switch.

With the IGNITION SWITCHin "Run,"current no longer flows from terminal 86ato operate the fuel pump relay. With theengine running, however, there is air flowto the intake manifold. This causes thecontacts of the FUEL PUMP SWITCH toclose. Current then flows from theBATI'ERY, through the contacts of the

control relay, terminal 88a of the relay set,

the FUEL PUMP SWITCH,terminal 86b ofthe relay set, the fuel pump relay coil, control unit terminal 28, to G7. The fuelpump relay contacts remain closed and theFUEL PUMP operates. If the engine stopsor stalls, the FUEL PUMP SWITCHopens, stopping the FUEL PUMP.

The COOLANT TEMPERATURESENSOR provides an input signal that tellsthe ECU to provide the extra fuel necessaryduring warm up.

The IGNITION COIL sends an inputsignal to the ECU that provides enginespeed information. The ECU constantlycontrols the FUEL INJECTORS accordingto this signal. During deceleration, the

IGNITION COIL also transmits adeceleration mode signal to the ECU to stopinjection of fuel.

The THROTTLE PLATE SWITCH islocated on the throttle shaft (which isoperated by the accelerator pedal). Theswitch indicates whether the throttle is atidle, full throttle, or in between. The switchthen signals the ECU accordingly.

The LAMBDASENSOR is located in theexhaust system. It is an oxygen sensorwhich measures the oxygen concentrationof the exhaust gases, and sends an inputsignal to the ECU.

When the car is moving, the SPEED-OMETER sends pulses to the LAMBDASENSOR SWITCH UNIT. The LAMBDASENSOR SWITCH UNIT contact closesevery 30,000miles. This grounds the "EXH.GAS SENSOR" INDICATOR to remind theowner of the need to replace the LAMBDA

SENSOR. When the engine is being started, the OIL PRESSURE SWITCHgrounds theindicator to test its bulb.

    CIRCUIT OPERATION

    Turn

With the IGNITION SWITCHin "Start"or "Run," voltage is applied through FUSEA and terminals 15and 49of the HAZARDSWITCH to the "+" (positive) terminal ofthe TURN/HAZARD FLASHER. With theTURN SWITCH in "R," current flowsthrough the VIO wires, TURN SWITCH,and LT BLU wires to both the RH FRONTTURN/PARK LIGHT (to G2) and RHREAR TURN LIGHT (to G5). TheTURN /HAZARD FLASHER opens andcloses the circuit, flashing the lights. Theflasher also directs current through theTURN INDICATOR to G3. With the TURNSWITCHin "L," similar current flowtakesplace to the LH lights.

The HAZARD INDICATOR glows dimlywhen supplied from the INSTRUMENTLIGHTS circuit through terminal 58a andthe resistor.

    Hazard

Voltage is applied at all times throughFuse I to terminal 30 of the HAZARDSWITCH. With the HAZARD SWITCH in"Hazard," current flows through terminal49, the TURN/HAZARD FLASHER, bothHAZARDSWITCHterminals Land R, andthe REAR TURN LIGHTS and FRONTTURN/PARK LIGHTS to Gl, G2, G3 andG5. The flasher opens and closes the circuitas it does for the turn signals, flashing thelights and TURN INDICATOR. Currentalso flows through the HAZARDINDICATOR to G3.

    Gauges

With the IGNITION SWITCH in "Start"or "Run," current flows through FUSE Aand C22 to the'FUEL GAUGE, COOLANTTEMPERATURE GAUGE and the

TACHOMETER. The gauges each includetwo magnetic coils which pull on a pointerin opposite directions. The balancing effectof the two coils prevents errors that wouldresult from varying car voltage. In eachgauge, current through one coil also flowsthrough a sender. The sender controls thepointer by changing the amount of currentflowing through that coil. The constantcurrent flowing through the other coil flowsto G3.

In the solid state TACHOMETER, theIGNITION COIL primary pulses arechanged to a varying voltage, which movesthe pointer.

    Indicators

With the IGNITION SWITCH in "Start"or "Run," voltage is applied to the FUEL

WARNING and OIL PRESSURE WARN-ING INDICATORS. Voltage is appliedthrough C23 and the FUEL WARNING

INDICATOR to terminal W of the FUELGAUGE SENDER. When fuel is low, theswitch inside the sender grounds theindicator and the bulb goes on. Voltage isapplied through C24 and the OILPRESSURE WARNING INDICATOR tothe OIL PRESSURE SWITCH. When theswitch closes, the INDICATOR bulb goeson.
