Bell Ringer
Simplify the following:1. √30 * √60
2. √300 * 5√20
3. 6√20 + 3√10 – 5√20 – 10√10
4. Find the distance AND midpoint of the line segment with the endpoints (-6, -2) and (5, 6).
What are we doing today?
SPI 4.4 Convert rates and measurements.
Conversion factors
A CONVERSION FACTOR is the number you multiply or divide by to convert from one unit to another.
In the metric system, milli- = 1/1,000centi- = 1/100kilo- = 1,000
Important Conversion Factors
Time
60 seconds = 1 minute 12 months = 1 year
60 minutes = 1 hour 365 days = 1 year
24 hours = 1 day 52 weeks = 1 year
7 days = 1 week
Important Conversion Factors cont.
Length, Capacity, and Weight/Mass (Customary)
12 inches (in.) = 1 foot (ft) 2 cups = 1 pint (pt)
3 feet = 1 yard (yd) 2 pints = 1 quart (qt)
5,280 feet = 1 mile (mi) 4 quarts = 1 gallon (gal)
8 fluid ounces (fl oz) = 1 cup (c)
16 ounces (oz) = 1 pound (lb)
In the metric system,
milli- = 1/1,000
centi- = 1/100
kilo- = 1,000
Important Conversion Factors cont.
Length, Capacity, and Weight/Mass (Metric)
1,000 millimeters (mm) = 1 meter
1,000 liters = 1 kiloliter (kL)
100 centimeters (cm) = 1 meter (m)
1,000 milligrams (mg) = 1 gram (g)
1,000 meters = 1 kilometer (km)
100 centigrams (cg) = 1 gram
1,000 milliliters (mL) = 1 liter (L) 1,000 grams = 1 kilogram (kg)
100 centiliters (cL) = 1 liter
An example of a problem:
The mass of an object is 7.45 kg. What is the mass of the object in grams?
We’ll use DIMENSIONAL ANALYSIS to solve these problems.
The mass of an object is 7.45 kg. What is the mass of the object in grams?
Pairs Check
Person 1: How many liters of water are in 35 mL?
Person 2: How many mL of water are in 2.3 L?
Another Pairs Check
Person 1: The road between two towns is 2.44 miles long. How long is the road in yards?
Person 2: The road between two towns is 5,922 yards long. How long is the road in miles?
Another example:
A truck is traveling at 55 miles per hour. How many feet per second is the truck traveling?
Pairs Check
Person 1: A truck is traveling at 90 miles per hour. How many feet per second is the truck traveling?
Person 2: A truck is traveling at 20 miles per hour. How many feet per second is the truck traveling?
Dimensional Analysis
Give the definition in your own words.
