When the concrete segments arrived on site I would inspect them to ensure they were fit for purpose with no damage, flaws in the materials or cracks. I regularly checked that grout samples were taken from the line and sent away to be tested along with constantly monitoring the paperwork on the machinery to confirm it was all in good working order and safe to be operated. I pride myself in always establishing a good rapport with the men in my charge, the client and other relevant authorities on site.

September 2017 to JanuaryShaft Sinking on Flood Relief SchemeBalfour BeattyMy role as works manager was to oversee the construction of shafts for a flood relief scheme.I sat in on some of the design meetings ahead of the construction start date to share my expertise and experience. During this period and throughout the construction ground samples were taken.Whilst this started using a caisson and cutting edge method, hard ground led us to adapt to the underpinning method.I was in charge of the miners and sub contractors on this project. My instructions came direct from the client and therefore my focus was on making sure everybody was working towards the same end goal efficiently.Safety and quality was paramount to me, therefore I always ensured Risk assessments & Method statements were correctly prepared and followed. Along with ITP’s in place for the periodic sampling, regular safety inspections, briefings and tool box talks, which were all carried out by myself.

January 2016 to September 2017Crossrail C610 Pudding Mill Lane, LondonCostainsI was headhunted to fill the position of Tunnel Construction Superintendent/works Manager, overseeing the fit out of the North East spur from Pudding Mill Lane to Stepney Green.Along with preparing and checking risk assessments & method statements, I held start of shift briefings and leadership talks.During this time on the North East spur, I was instrumental in creating an emergency escape plan. Working with London Fire Brigade and our environmental team to ensure a safe working environment and evacuation procedure.Whilst managing the teams of men working in the tunnel and procuring materials and equipment, I was also responsible for liaising with logistics, contractors & interfacing with other agencies i.e. environmental teams, Health & safety officers. Agreeing and arranging access to the tunnel for others was fundamental in ensuring personnel could carry out their work and materials could pass through to other spurs of the tunnel where such access may have be limited. Conditions in the tunnel needed to be constantly monitored as work on other parts of the project could be a factor in the safe working environment of our tunnel in relation to air quality and dust.I handed out NCR’s to any workers or contractors who did meet the correct standard of quality and requirements demanded in the construction of the 6m concrete segment lined tunnel.

February 2012 – September 2012Northfleet Inert Waste Transfer SiteTeam BFK for Crossrail C300 ProjectI was General Foreman at the Northfleet Site. I was instrumental in the site setup. It is an environmental site accepting the entire clay product produced on the Crossrail C300 project at Westbourne Park. There are many logistical obstacles to overcome as the clay is brought to site by rail before being transported by water to Wallasea Island nature reserve. Contamination monitoring is a key factor in the day to day running of the site along with clay stock pile management. My experience was called upon by the Westbourne Park site to help with launching the two TBM’s for the tunnel drives. Other tasks include shift rotas, plant planning & man management. My teams’ efficient running of the site has led to an Environmental Best Practise Award.

Organising, consulting and being in charge of a 300 man strong workforce. Communicating with Health and Safety Officials, ensuring safe working practice and Health & Safety Regulations were followed. On the tunnel drive we had to navigate through unstable ground in extremely close proximity to London Underground and the Heathrow Express Line.In the path of the tunnel we came across a number of concrete reinforced piles 1.2m diameters these had to be cut and secured to enable the drive to continue. A 40mm thick steel plate was adapted and positioned over the build area to ensure stability of the work carried out. My work on this site helped to accumulate over 1,500,000 man hours without a reportable incident and a ROSPA Silver Award. There were many Logistical obstacles to overcome as expected with working on a site with high security and as busy as Heathrow.

It was applied to a trial tunnel at Heathrow terminal 4 & cargo.Various crucial measurements were taken at regulardistance intervals and recorded. The trial was ultimately a success which opened the door for shotcrete to be used more widely on London projects. The shotcrete method was subsequently adopted for the Waterloo & London Bridge Stations on the Jubilee line extension of London's Underground.

1988 – 1991Channel TunnelTransmanche Link, DoverI started on this project as Pit Boss on the land drives at Castle Hill, at the end of the drives I was transferred to the cross over cavern as Tunnel Foreman. The UK cross-over cavern was the world’s largest subsea excavation with internal measurements of 156m long by 18m wide and 10m high, it was constructed using the shotcrete tunnelling method. On completion of the cross over cavern I was transferred to the 4.8m service tunnel TBM drive. After the breakthrough to the French side I was put in charge of all the cross passages and hand tunnel gangs. There were 8 gangs spanning a distance of approximately 12miles and my strong man management skills were called into force, to ensure performance and quality of the work carried out were not compromised. This was followed by my secondment to the French side with the hand tunnel gangs and called for a diplomatic approach to assisting them in completion of their cross over cavern.
