Status (1)•Making slow but steady progress on first Spectrometer Solenoid (“Magnet 2”)— fabrication work on turret completed

o welding radiation shield and LN2 reservoir connections doneo wrapping in MLIo welding outer vacuum covers

— already doneo cold mass leak checkedo condenser sleeves and magnet leads completed

— to doo complete instrumentation feedthroughso complete fill/vent connectionso add weld preps to end plates (under way; weld rings already in place in vacuum vessel)

Status (2)

•Expect final assembly of radiation shield and vacuum vessel completed this week— leak check next week (week of March 23)— first cool-down expected week of March 30

o keep your fingers crossed!

•Other news— tried tracker go-no-go gauge in Magnet 1 (the earlier one)

o bore was out of magnet but still welded to patch panel and plate– fit fine! (see photo later)

— test will be repeated in Magnet 2 this week after warm bore installed

Coupling Coil Update

•Visited likely vendor for magnet fabrication— Qihuan Mechanical and Electronic Engineering Corporation (QMEEC)

o located in Beijing— Derun Li, Steve Virostek, MZ, Li Wang and ShiXian Zheng were

there

•Company statistics— 29 employees; 2200 m2 floor space— 20 years experience with superconducting magnets

o MRI magnetso BEPC-II detector magnet (3 m diameter, 4 m long)o completing MRI magnet of their own design now (see photos)

•Impressions— quite favorable; they are interested and knowledgeable

o but, we still want Li Wang to manage the work!
