A Word About Masters

When you install Paperback, you’ll notice that there are six different masters designated by 6, 9, 12 in the Text collection and 24, 48 and 96 in the Display collection. ese numbers pertain to the point size at which we recommend using that version. ere

is actually a range of sizes at which reccomend using each master. is chart demonstrates the suggested range:

ideal pt. size

Hey, they’re your fonts. ese ranges are only our suggestions. For example, the 6-point master might look great in a layout at large sizes if you like all of those facets. If you want something a little more delicate, move up to the display weights. However, for maximum readability at small sizes, staying within the size ranges under 15 points is a good idea.

Paperback Features

Paperback has been optimized to work with design applications that support OpenType applications such as

Adobe InDesign, Photoshop and Illustrator. If your application does not support OpenType applications, we suggest that you install the Mac_ps version on the Macintosh and either the

ttf Basic or PostScript Basic in Windows.

e nice thing about using the OpenType fonts with OpenType savvy applications is that you can access several features such as true small caps, fractions and ligature styles in a single font. e Basic collections require five separate fonts to deliver these features. is document will show how to access these features with OpenType or PostScript fonts.

C Small Caps D

e 6, 9 and 12-point masters of Paperback Text include true small caps. While most page layout and

word processing applications include a small caps function, this function

simply scales the uppercase characters in the font to work at the height of the lowercase characters. is creates a

disparity in weight between the upper and lowercase characters, makes

type designers pull their hair out and generally looks like crap.

C Small Caps D

If using an OpenType-savvy application such as Adobe InDesign

and the OpenType Paperback Text Fonts, true small caps will

automatically be substituted if you select Small Caps (shown right). is

function automatically substitutes the mid-cap height figures and shis

punctuation as well. You can also force all characters in a line to the small-cap height by selecting the All Small Caps

feature (shown lower right).

C Figure Styles D

e 6-, 9- and 12-point masters of Paperback Text include four different

kinds of figures. We will list them below and give a short overview of

how they are used. ese figure styles are integrated in the OpenType fonts

and can be accessed through the OpenType menu in OpenType-savvy applications (shown lower right). If using a non-OpenType application

such as Quark XPress 6.0, we suggest that you use the PostScript versions

of the fonts. e different figure styles must be accessed by specifying different fonts corresponding to that

style (shown right).

Old-style figures (1) are best used in running text because they do not interrupt the visual flow of a paragraph. Lining figures (2) are work well when using text in all caps. In an OpenType-savvy ap-plication, lining figures and some corresponding characters are automatically substituted when the All Caps function is selected. Tabular fig-ures (3) are designed to line up in columns. is is useful for large corporations to show how they are using accounting tricks to cover huge losses.
