How products are selectedLearn/hear about new product or service
Make initial assessment regarding the its suitability for a project
Request additional info as needed (custom questionnaire)
Review compiled information and make selection or specification

How new products emergeDevelop new building product/process
Address numerous different questions from designers and clients on effectiveness of product
Consult 3 rd party companies for initial assessment with regards to overall suitability (possible LCA)
Develop marketing and education strategy to get product specified in the market.

Considerations• Questionnaires by various firms do not always request
quantifiable information• Need to substantiate sustainable claims with standards,
certifications, and recognized valuation procedures• Provide information addressing the requirements of
sustainable performance and rating systems, such as LEED®,Green Codes, IGCC, and ASHRAE 189
• Criterion-based format, no open-ended questions• Create a report that provides specifiable environment &
sustainability attributes

BenchmarksLEED is transforming the building industry by providing a benchmark definition of a green building
What about a benchmark definition for products and materials?• No definition exists• Could help in selecting products

ISO & Reporting Sustainability• ISO 14021 - 5.5 Claims of sustainability
• The concepts involved in sustainability are highly complex and still under study. At this time there are no definitive methods for measuring sustainability or confirming its accomplishment. Therefore, no claim of achieving sustainability shall be made.
• ISO 14020 - Goal of labels and declarations• Communication of verifiable, defendable information, that can not be misleading, on
environmental aspects of products and services• Encourage the demand for and supply of those products and services that cause
less stress on the environment, • Stimulating the potential for market-driven continuous environmental improvement
• ISO 14025 – Environmental Product Declarations (EPD)• Information about the impacts associated with product or service,
such as raw material acquisition, energy use and efficiency, contentof materials and chemical substances, emissions to air, soil and water and waste generation.

LEED Pilot Credit 1: LCA• Intent
• To encourage the use of environmentally preferable building materials and assemblies.
• Requirements• Part 1: LCA of Structure and Envelope Assemblies
• Define the basic building type (high- or low-rise), geographic region, and area (square feet) of assemblies in each category
• If reusing portions of assemblies in-situ within a renovation of an existing building:• For each assembly specified in (a), indicate how many square feet are reused from the existing
superstructure.• For each reused assembly, indicate the percent of the assembly’s component materials that have
been reused.
• Part 2: Materials Not Addressed by Part 1 (LCA) • Focus of LCA is on Materials
• Applicable Rating Systems)• New Construction• Healthcare

What if there was a way to present…
• Design and Construction teams with organized, comparable information
• Manufacturers with one location for communicating information about a product that any designer could see
• A format that makes it easier to determine if this product will help your design intent
This is what CSI and GreenFormat does!
![Page 16: Specifying Green Building Products (Greenbuild 2010)](https://reader036.fdocuments.net/reader036/viewer/2022070304/54bea7984a7959775b8b45dc/html5/thumbnails/16.jpg)

Integrating LCA into product environmental reporting• The building is the sum of the parts (products/assemblies)
In the very near future, an LCA (or product lifecycle assessment) will be the definitive statements about a product’s environmental impact in relationshipThe ‘whole’ building.

GreenFormat…• Is not a spec! GreenFormat is a format for structuring
sustainable product information• All products organized by MasterFormat ™ 2004 numbers and titles
• All product listings can be exported as a formatted or file.
• Listed on GreenFormat does not mean it’s “green”!• CSI does not validate products
• Any manufacturer can list a product and self-authorize
• CSI and Building Green International randomly audit listings for accuracy
• Users can report problems
