What is Specialist High Skills Major?

The SHSM program at St. Marguerite d’Youville is a ministry approved program that

allows students to focus their learning on a specific economic sector (sport) while meeting

the requirements for the Ontario Secondary School Diploma (OSSD) and assists in their

transition from secondary school to apprenticeship training, college, university, or the

workplace. St. Marguerite d’Youville’s program benefits any student wishing to explore

and refine career goals geared towards the sport sector. SHSM allows our students to make

informed decisions related to post secondary goals, develop skills to be competitive in the

sports sector and gain certifications and training related to sport.

Required Components For the Sport SHSM

1. A bundle of nine grade 11 and Grade 12 credits

(see chart on opposite page)

4 “high skills major” credits (specialized courses

with a sports major focus)

3 credits in each of English and Math and 1 either

Science or Business or Social Science

2 Co-operative Education credits related to sport

2. Seven sector recognized certifications and/or

training courses/programs

4 compulsory: First Aid, CPR, AED, and WHMIS

3 electives: From a list of additional certifications

and training programs

3. Experiential Learning and career exploration

(i.e. conferences, tour of athletic facility etc.)

4. “Reach ahead” experiences connected with the

student’s post secondary pathway (visiting and

networking with colleges, universities and sector

associations)

5. Development of Essential Skills and work habits

required in the sector and use of the Ontario

Skills Passport (OSP) for purposes of

documentation

6. Three Contextualized learning Assignments

(CLAs) (1 in each of Math and English and 1 in

Science or Social Science)
