When it comes to must haves in the kitchen, an island is pretty hard totop. At minimum, the island provides additional counter and storage
space while some of the more elaborate islands include fixtures and ap-pliances such as cooktops, sinks, dishwashers, barstools and lightingelements that showcase a homeowner’s personal style. Part prep space, part homework hub and part social center, the kitchen island pulls dou-ble and triple duty. Ready to create your own island paradise? Read onto find out about the current trends in this kitchen cornerstone and the
most visited piece of furniture in the home.
BIGGER BANG FOR YOUR BUCKThe earliest kitchen islands in the country date back to the colonial
era in which simple worktables located near the hearth were used to pre-pare meals for the 18th century family. While today’s islands may resemblea freestanding piece of furniture or concentrate on utility purposes withouta lot of decorative elements, others are designed to compliment cabinetryand coordinate with the rest of the room, in addition to providing extraseating and other accouterments that make these an enviable part of thehome.
The first thing that must be considered when it comes to choosing thekitchen island that’s right for you is the amount of space you have in the
room and how much you are willing to spend. According to Melissa Myersof kitchens etc. inc. in Elkhart, you need plenty of walk space between theisland and the wall cabinetry and a clear idea of how you plan to use it. The National Kitchen and Bath Association recommends at least 42 inchesof aisle space surrounding an island or 48 if there are multiple cooks. Theminimum recommendation for surface work area is 3 feet by 4 feet.

• Popular countertop materials include quartz, laminate, stone, wood andstainless steel.
• Create a piece that coordinates but does not match the rest of the cabinetry. • Consider a complimentary color to give the space a pop.• Create separation between preparation and dining spaces by adding contrasting
heights. • Add an overhand with turned legs to give your island a furniture feel. • Mix shapes and materials such as metal, glass, stone and wood elements. • Add a few appliances such as a prep sink, cooktop or dishwasher drawer. • Select lighting features that highlight the space. Popular choices include pendant
lighting, billiard fixtures and chandeliers to give the room pizzazz. • Add whimsical barstools and seating that meets your needs, feels great and will
give guests something to talk about. This small canvas is perfect for bold patterns and bright colors.

Experts say anything less andyou are defeating the purpose, however, going too big has itsproblems as well. When theyare larger than 48 inches it be-comes difficult to clean themand they become cumbersometo work on.
Freestanding worktablesand rolling carts can be had foras little as $200, while basicbuilt-in islands from stock cabi-netry can start around $600. Ofcourse a more elaborate islandwith additional customized fea-tures can push the cost signifi-cantly higher.
Myers says that her cus-tomers look for islands that offermore than additional storage, seating and counter space, butenhance the work zone with theinclusion of double trash cans, cooktops, refrigerator drawers, wine chillers and microwaves inorder to keep items close athand.
“Parents often want snacks accessible to children and a lot of our cus-tomers add a prep sink to their islands that are not only a great functionalitem when cooking, but can double as a cooler when filled with ice,” shesays. “Plus, prep sinks have evolved over the years into a whole range oftrough sinks. Kohler makes a great prep sink called the Mystic that featuresa wavy design and looks great in a kitchen island.”
SHOWCASE YOUR STYLEWhile this central prep space should coordinate with its surroundings,
it truly is an island unto its own (pardon the pun) and no longer has tomatch completely. Designers say that homeowners are taking great pains totreat their kitchen island as its own piece of furniture and turn it into a focalpoint that reflects their personal style. If you already have a kitchen islandthat needs a modern update, consider refacing your island through a localprofessional that will give your space a mini makeover.
In addition to unique shapes and a mix between function and fashion,Wendi Lopez, a registered interior designer with L.J. Wagner in Nappanee, says homeowners are painting their islands different colors, using a differentcountertop material, and highlighting the space with a variety of styles, sizesand textures to make the area stand out. No matter if you love clean lines orprefer elaborate detailing, there is an island option that is right for you.

“It doesn’t have to conform to the rest of the kitchen,” she says, not-ing that her customers enjoy open shelving on the end of theirislands for display and incorporating a mix of doors, drawers and basketsto help the island stand out from the rest of the cabinetry. “Right now, any-thing goes.”
By adding multiple heights to their island and combining it withturned legs and a built-in table top for casual dining, as well as whimsicalbarstools, pendant lighting and chandeliers, they are able to omit the sep-arate eating space entirely. Myers says her customers are constantly onthe lookout for fabulous add-ons that can enhance the island area.
“Our customers might include wine racks, glass doors and otheropen shelving that enables them to highlight their display plates or decora-tive glasses. It really is the perfect place to create a standout feature be-tween the kitchen and the family room that never fails to draw a crowd.” ■

variety of vendorsthe home & outdoor show coming March 8-10
by julie younghouse & home feature writer
With a new location allowing for a variety of vendors and plenty of things tosee and do, the 2013 Home & Outdoor Show, promoted by the BuildersAssociation of Kosciusko Fulton Counties, is a great chance for homeown-ers to talk to experts and plan for the year ahead.
Sponsored by Kosciusko REMC, the Home & Outdoor Show will beheld at 3114 E. US 30, Warsaw, (current location of Superior Excavating &Soil) and will feature displays by new vendors and old favorites. Vendorswill showcase the products and services that will help your home look itsbest in 2013.
“This show is a great idea generator,” says Joni Truex, executive offi-cer of BAKFC. “There will be something for everyone.”
Though homeowners have been keeping a close eye on their discre-tionary income in recent years, they know that home maintenance is some-thing that cannot be avoided. As they have started to feel better abouttheir bottom line, Truex says more and more homeowners are looking to in-vest in projects that will update and modernize their abodes or start think-ing about that custom home they’ve always dreamed about.
She says the Home & Outdoor Show will be a great place to find so-lutions to all homeowner issues no matter how big or small. Whetherguests are looking to remodel an existing place, spruce up their propertywith great landscaping, build their next dream home or merely desire tomeet with home repair specialists, there will be plenty of vendors on handto meet and greet guests.
“We’ll have everything from remodelers to construction firms to build-ing supply retailers, and experts offering everything from gutters, windows, doors and HVAC systems to other service professionals that can restoreorder to your property after storm damage,” she says. “Our visitors aregoing to love the new variety.”
In addition, the new location enables BAKFC to showcase bigger andheavier equipment including boats and toy haulers, which are multipur-pose vehicles designed to provide living/sleeping quarters in addition tohauling ATVs, motorcycles, snowmobiles or jet skis.
“We want our guests to enjoy their lifestyle their way, whether that iswith an RV, an automatic sprinkler system that saves them from wateringthe yard or the latest in energy efficient products. I think our visitors will beexcited to meet and talk with experts who are ready to meet their needs. It’s going to be a great show.” ■

The Michiana Home Show is back again! The annual home showis a local favorite, bringing 180 different home improvement experts to-gether under one roof. On-site professionals cover a wide variety ofareas from kitchen and bath designers to landscapers to heating andcooling experts.
“Putting all those experts under one roof makes it easy to find anyinformation you may need about your next home improvement proj-ects,” said show promoter Mel Wood. “We fill the building to capacityeach year with exhibitors, and this year is no different,” he stated.

This year’s show takes place March 15-17 at the Century Centerin downtown South Bend. Four nationally recognized speakers willheadline the home show this year – DIY Network television hostsDean and Derek, and self-proclaimed “Grillologists” Mad Dog &Merrill.
Dean and Derek are hosts of the popular DIY shows “RockSolid” and “Indoors Out.” They’ll be at the show Friday and Saturday, answering questions and giving tips on how to transform an ordinarypatio into an outdoor living space for relaxing and entertaining.
Mad Dog & Merrill travel the country performing in front of liveaudiences, writing cookbooks and making videos to show peoplehow easy it is to entertain creatively in their own backyards. The duowill be on site all three days of the show, entertaining and educatingbackyard grillers about the finer points of grilling.
Hearing from nationally renowned speakers is just one part ofwhat is typically a very busy day for most home show visitors. Manycome prepared to gather up literature and mingle with the experts, stopping for a bite to eat at the concession stand along the way.“Mid-March is the perfect time to get homeowners out of the houseand into the mindset of spring and summer projects,” said Wood. “It’sa great time because the building season really hasn’t started yet, sobuilders and remodelers are preparing for the coming busy months,”he noted. “If people are interested in starting a project, now is thetime to get on the list with these folks so they can get their work donerather than waiting when things get busy.”
While the overall building and remodeling business has taken ahit in recent years due to the downturned economy, Wood said thingsseem to be steadily turning around. “We’re seeing business turnaround very quickly. The industry is really starting to come back. Ithas a little ways to go still, but there’s much more work out there. We’ve seen a huge increase in remodeling projects, and new housingis starting to bounce back, too. It’s all very encouraging.”

MICHIANA HOME SHOW 7
by teresa nicodemushouse & home feature writer
“The beauty of using stone in landscape design is in the eyes ofthe beholder,” comments Mark Nagy of Knepp Sand & Stone Inc.
in New Paris. “Stone adds a natural splendor to the garden.Colors are more brilliant; the sun won’t fade the stone’s color,
unlike cement or other man-made outdoor items, which often losecolor after sun exposure.”
OPTIONS AND APPLICATIONSDecorative stone comes in many colors and variations of texture
and size with just as many unique applications to landscaping. Youcan find a plethora of types of stone available today for outdoor land-scaping needs. Everything from lava rock, slate, granite and crushednative stone to Mexican beach pebbles and blue stone. Rock gar-dens in home landscaping can be quaint clusters of rocks or addedto sparkling 100-foot waterfalls tumbling down large outcroppingstones.
“Landscape designers are so creative. As a supplier, our compa-ny doesn’t often see the final product, but we know our stone prod-ucts are being used in so many different applications, such as step-ping stone paths, water feature enhancements, wall stones, boulders, to divide garden paths, edging and even on hillsides usingoutcropping treads, which are stone steps embedded up the side ofa hill,” says Nagy.
PAINTING YOUR LANDSCAPEHow do you apply rocks cleverly to your rock garden? “It’s like a
painting or drawing,” says Jon Cutrell, landscape designer of theRock Garden within the DeFries Calendar Garden in New Paris. “Ifyou are aware of how the rocks look in the natural environment likestreams and hills, you will start to recognize what looks natural andappealing to you.”
Cutrell recommends avoiding too much regularity in the rockspacing, such as even spacing or lining the rocks up perfectly.Embed the rocks in the ground slightly like they tend to be in the nat-ural world, and cluster them in odd-numbered groupings of three orfive rather than two or four. When creating focal points in your rockgarden, consider using large dramatic rocks in prominent areas andsurround them with striking plants and use pieces of sculpture.
Choose plants for your rock garden that will thrive in sandstoneand rock that is deteriorating. These plants like sedums and manyvarieties of sassafras will grow right in the rocks and break themapart. Alpine forget-me-nots will grow in crevices and gritty soil.
As you consider the design of your rock garden, the use of orien-tal influences can create a peaceful, understated atmosphere in yourgarden. With Japanese Zen gardens the arrangement of the rocksbecomes the design of the garden, according to Cutrell. The gardenis focused on simplicity but adds a dramatic touch. You might see alarge uniform bed of gravel surrounding a cluster of large rocks. Thegravel can be raked in curves or unique outlines to create temporary, but attractive designs.
“The main thing to be aware of as you create a rock garden is thekinds of rocks available in your area and where good suppliers are ofvarieties of gravel and stone from around the country,” commentsCutrell. “I grew up in Pennsylvania where beautiful sandstone wasavailable. I was used to seeing rocks in the landscape, waterwaysand creeks. Be aware of creating these natural looks as you developyour own rock garden.” ■

GET EDUCATEDEveryone wants to save money and energy around the house and thebest place to start is by having an energy audit conducted through either a private company or a program such as Energizing Indiana andPower Moves through Kosciusko REMC. Both programs are free andgive homeowners advice and tips for ways in which they can spotenergy wasters throughout the house.
“I used the Energizing Indiana audit myself,” says Austin Williams, financial manager of Home Energy LLC in Nappanee. “Not only was it afree service, but one that gave me a lot of insight into my home, andthey gave me eight CFL light bulbs, two low-flow shower heads, threefaucet aerators, and a special power strip designed to shut off phantomloads such as a charger left plugged into a wall that continues to pullelectricity.”
Carol Ousley, energy advisor at Kosciusko REMC, says PowerMoves is a similar program offered to REMC members that can alertresidents of potential savings they may not have considered.
“These programs are designed to help our customers be betterstewards of their energy usage,” she says.
Both Williams and Ousley say that it’s amazing how little peopleunderstand about their electricity bill and where their money is reallygoing. When they understand peak charges, what they are paying perkilowatt and what resources are available to them, everybody wins.
“What’s really nice about these programs is that they are cus-tomized for your situation,” Ousley says. “These programs go beyondbasic tips in order to find the best solution for your lifestyle.”
CHANGES ADD UPTony Zimmerman with Solar Energy Systems in Nappanee says makingthe little changes in your home to save energy will add up when itcomes to shifting into alternative energy or living off the grid entirely.LED lighting can cut that portion of your utility bill to an eighth or a tenthof what it normally is, and then if you want to make that move to solarpower, it will significantly cut down on the amount of money you have tospend.
“A solar energy system is a significant investment, but it won’t doyou any good if you have not prepared for it by doing all of the littlethings around your house,” he says. “We had a client who wanted to gocompletely off the grid but found it cost prohibitive to do so. When hemade the commitment to properly insulate his home, switch to LEDlighting and make all of those little changes, when he was ready to in-stall the solar panels it took fewer panels and less money than it wouldhave beforehand. ■

Today’s residents use far more electricity than it takes to livecomfortably. Thankfully, homeowners have the power to takecharge of the amount of energy they expend in their homes. From simple switches to shifting habits and money saving
programs offered through local utility companies, now’s a great time to turn on to
a bright new future of responsible energy usage.

gameTIME
turn your backyardinto a sports oasis
by shelley swifthouse & home feature writer
Stash away the video games. It’s time to take family game nightoutdoors. With a little ingenuity and a varying degree of expense,
your backyard can become the ultimate game time destination. If you have the space, consider converting your ordinary lawninto a play haven for basketball, volleyball or tennis. Even a
putting green or lap pool is possible with some smart budgeting and proper planning.
SPORTS COURTSIf the kids are no longer satisfied with the portable basketball
goal on the driveway, consider turning part of your backyard into apermanent sports court. Being in Indiana, it’s no surprise that bas-ketball is the top choice for backyard sports venues. Those withample space might opt for a full-size basketball court, which meas-ures 94 feet by 50 feet by NBA standards. A professional half-courtmeasures roughly 47 feet by 50 feet. A smaller 25-by-46-foot courtis still big enough to accommodate a college-regulation lane, freethrow line and three-point arc.

A full tennis court, on the other hand, requires a space at least 114 feetby 56 feet. Concrete suppliers can come in and level the ground in yourbackyard, then pour a flat concrete surface. Paint stencils and tapes areavailable to help homeowners make high school, college or professional-regulation markings, whether for basketball or tennis.
Online retailer PlayMakers sells do-it-yourself kits to create basketballcourts and tennis courts in your own backyard, without the need for paintor tape markings. There are ¾-inch-thick modular tiles in 10 different col-ors, which can be custom designed to create any size basketball or tenniscourt on a level surface. The tiles drain water to create a slip-resistant sur-face, allowing for play even after a heavy rain.
If volleyball is your family’s sport of choice, contact a local landscapecompany to dig up some dirt and deliver a truckload of sand to create abackyard sand volleyball court. The sand can double as a giant sandboxfor younger kids, or a modified beach for a nearby pool.
SWIM TIMEPools aren’t just for splashing around in the summer sun. They’re also a
great way to get some exercise, or to cross-train for other sports. If youdon’t have room for a full-size pool, don’t worry. Michiana-area poolbuilders like Backyard Pools and Bontrager Pools, both of Elkhart, can alsobuild smaller lap pools ideal for some aquatic exercise.
In the swimming world, “long course” laps measure 50 meters while“short course” laps are 25 meters long. Pool builders can generally buildany length of lap pool, which is generally the width of a single swim lane.
Other lap pools, like those sold by online retailer Endless Pools, areshorter in length and allow swimmers to swim against a regenerating cur-rent. Such pools can be built indoors or out, and often double as a multi-person spa or hot tub when the current is shut off.

practice. The Zehrs can create gentle slopes and other undulations in theturf to create real-course golfing conditions. “We can create undulationsand make the green completely flat. It’s all based on what the client’s de-sires are,” said Shana Zehr.
Her husband’s 15 years’ experience as a golf course superintendentmakes him an ideal putting green installer, she said. “Every green we de-sign is totally customized, from the layout to the turf we use,” she said.“Different turfs produce different stimp speeds, which is how fast the ballrolls. We have everything from recreation to professional-grade turf. A lot ofpeople even put in sand bunkers.”
Zehr said she’s yet to hear a customer regret installing a backyardgreen. “When we check back in they say they love it. Their kids are usingit, their grandkids are using it. In the six years we’ve been in businesswe’ve never gotten any negative feedback,” she said.
STASH YOUR STUFFOnce you’ve turned your backyard into player’s paradise, it’s time to
plan out where to stash all your stuff. Cletus Wingard sells custom barnwood shacks that he says are perfect for storing basketballs, golf clubsand tennis rackets.
“I’ve sold them to people who store camping equipment, garden toolsand swimming equipment down by the lake. They’re great for storing justabout anything you can think of,” said Wingard, who builds the sheds on4-by-4-foot treated skids. The structures range in size from 2-by-2 feet to4-by-8 feet. He custom designs each shed based on the customer’s re-quests. Racks, shelves and other storage fixtures can be built right in tokeep all that sporting equipment neatly organized.
Wingard’s unique sheds are made from old barn wood, weathered to afaded gray. The insides are covered in waterproof fiberglass panels.Wingard also makes custom windows and rustic metal roofs. The rusticsheds make for a great conversation piece, he said, not to mention a greatplace to stash your stuff until the next game begins. ■
GO GREENIt seems like every golfer’s dream come true – a putting green in one’s
own backyard. The dream is now a reality for a growing number of home-owners who are discovering just how easy it is to bring a bit of the fairwayshome.
Lavon and Shana Zehr have built backyard putting greens at homesthroughout Indiana and southern Florida, as well as Chicago and westernMichigan. The couple serve as a distributor for Putters Edge Turf. “We doeverything from the design work to the clearing and final installation,” saidShana Zehr. “We’ve been doing this for almost seven years, and it seemsto be increasing in popularity each year.”
Their client base runs the gamut from beginning golfers to pros to par-ents of pint-size golfers. “They all see the benefit in having a home prac-tice area,” said Shana Zehr.
The average backyard green measures roughly 300 to 400 square feet, she said, although greens can be much bigger. Smalls spaces can benefitfrom portable greens, which roll out onto any surface like a patio or deck.
The larger backyard greens are permanent installations, which are builtto blend in with the natural landscape. Mulch, rock or a longer fringe turf isused to connect the greens to the surrounding natural grass.
An average green has three to four holes for putting and chipping

one plank at a time
by teresa nicodemushouse & home feature writer
When Brenda Donat surveyed her property surrounding her modestbungalow in Goshen, she took a new view of her landscaping and the
small, covered deck she built 14 years ago to originally cover a cementstoop. Now it was a cozy, yet condensed place where family and friends
gathered for summer cookouts and stayed into the evening under twinklingwhite lights she strung on the deck and around her shrubbery.
“That deck is still standing, so I know I built it well,” says Donat.“But as you know, the longer you live in one place the grander yourideas become. My original deck was small and everyone huddled
there instead of spreading out. I needed more room.”
THE VISIONDreams start with a small spark
and grow to a brilliant flame if youare a visionary who doesn’t let anybarriers get in the way of success,a visionary like Brenda Donat. As abreast cancer survivor she’s tough, and as a builder – who would morethan likely scoff at anyone whowould say, “women don’t belong inthe construction trade” – she’s morethan capable.
Last summer she started mak-ing plans for her large, roomy deck. She measured. She put it down onpaper. She began buying lumber.

She believed in her dream. “I enjoybuilding things. Years ago my hus-band and I built a garage together, and I built all the rafters. Normally, you would buy pre-built rafters, butthey are more expensive. We were ayoung couple on a budget, so I de-cided to build them myself,” saysDonat. “I found over the years that Ienjoy building. Now being on myown for 20 years and on a singleperson’s income, I try to do my ownmaintenance and building if I can. There’s just something about seeingyour own finished product that givesyou a sense of accomplishment.”
DILIGENCE ANDDETERMINATION
One of the biggest challengesof building the 16-foot deck wasfinding the time to devote to herproject. As a career woman, sheworked during the day and wouldcome home in the evening andwork on the deck. Timing wasoften a problem. At least two hourswere spent in down time: an hoursetup, which included uncoveringlumber from a protective tarp, thenan hour storing tools and coveringthe lumber again at night. “I don'thave a garage. That's why it tookme more time to set up and takedown,” comments Donat. “I keptmy tools, etc. in my basement. Soto avoid running up and downstairs each day, I stored my toolsin the kitchen.”
Donat began building the decklast fall. She often thought halfwaythrough the project, “What have Igotten myself into?” as she luggedone heavy, wooden plank at a timeto her building site. Through theOctober rains, she worked. Mudposed a problem. Carrying theburdensome planks as her bootssank in mud only served to fosterher determination. “It was a minor

A massive white pine tree, which was cut down several yearsago, still had a considerable rootsystem that would have been astumbling block for many builders, but Donat decided to build on thesite “the girl’s way,” she sayslaughing. “Because I was buildingthe deck where it used to stand, I
ran into roots the size of small treetrunks. I had to reevaluate whereposts would be placed when Ifound I didn't have the muscle tocut through them.”
Donat states her favorite partof the building process was “whenall my angles came together per-fectly!” A portion of the deck, in-cluding a step, needed to be builtat an angle because of the land-
scaping. “I was worried that Iwould have to re-saw again andagain. I was truly amazed wheneverything fit the first time.”
The deck project is finally com-plete, and Donat still fusses aboutfinalizing the landscaping andbrickwork around the deck. She’snow considering replacing thevinyl siding on her home, on herown of course. But, she does
admit she would need to take a“how-to” class first.
When friends joke about herpink Susan G. Komen tool belt andask her if she’s wearing lipstickand earrings while she’s sawingand hammering, she just smiles. It’s all worth it, especially when hergrandson tells her, “I have the onlygrandma in the world that buildsher own stuff.” ■

choose the rightcontractor for yourremodeling projects
When you hire aremodeler, you are
buying a service rather than a
product. The quality of service
the remodeler provides will
determine the quality of the
finished product and your
satisfaction with the result.
To ensure yoursatisfaction, make sure
you hire a qualified,professional remodeler.
Doing yourhomework willhelp you have amore successful
experience.
• Make sure the builder or home remodeler has a permanentbusiness location and a good reputation with local banks and sup-pliers.
• Find out how long they have been in the building/remodelingbusiness. It usually takes three to five years to establish a financial-ly sound business. You want to make sure they will be around afterthe construction is complete to service any warranties.
• Check out the company's rating and if there have been anycomplaints filed with your local Better Business Bureau:www.bbb.org.
• Make sure the builder/remodeler has sufficient workers com-pensation and general liability insurance. If not, you may be liablefor any construction-related accidents on your premises.
• Ask the builder/remodeler to provide you with names of previ-ous customers. If they won't, beware. If they do, contact the cus-tomers to ask if they would hire the builder/remodeler again.
• Ask if you can see the builder/remodeler’s work - both com-pleted and in progress. Check for quality of workmanship and ma-terials.
• Do you feel you can easily communicate with thebuilder/remodeler? Remember, you will be in close contactthroughout the construction process and afterward as you live inyour new home.
• Make sure the builder/remodeler provides you with a completeand clearly writ ten contract. The contract will benefit both parties. If you are having a new home built, get and review a copy of thehome warranty and homeowner manual as well.
• Be cautious of unusually low-priced bids. If thebuilder/remodeler is unable to pay for the materials and labor asthe project proceeds, this may indicate a potential problem. Keepin mind that less expensive does not necessarily mean better!
is a proud member of
Contact your local home builders’ association for the names ofmember builders and remodelers: www.baec.com.
You should also ask family, friends or coworkers for recommendations.
It is easy to look at the cost of hiring a professional remodeler and think
only of labor and materials. But remember that a professional remodeler
offers you an important service - years of experience, the right tools, a
network of suppliers and subcontractors, and an in-depth understanding
of legal regulations, cost estimating, scheduling, and the latest construc-
tion techniques and materials.
Remodeling your home is uniquely different from building a new one.
With remodeling, your home becomes the worksite. You live side by side
with the project from start to finish. Once construction begins, you'll
probably long for simple pleasures like a dust-free home or a fully func-
tioning kitchen or bath. But the end result will be well worth these incon-
veniences.
The bathroom is the most remodeled area of the home at an impressive
78 percent, followed by 69 percent for kitchens, 44 percent new win-
dows and doors, and 35 percent whole house remodels.

HOW CAN A FRESH PAINT JOB ENHANCE MY HOME?Painting is the easiest, least expensive and quickest way to make
something better and appear newer, definitely a wise investment whenselling a house, as it adds first impression valuation.
WHAT ARE SOME TIPS ON PICKING THE PERFECT COLOR?My favorite is the newer software programs that can take one or
two colors and scientifically generate pallets of complimentary colors.Colors can be matched to anything, like carpet, tile or fabric samples. You can also use software to ‘try’ colors on a picture of your project, without lifting a brush or spending a dime. Seeing the paint and colorsactually on your walls during different times of the day, in different light-ing, is ideal. Most paint companies now supply inexpensive samplesthat allow you to do a small area and see if that color is the one youwant before becoming totally committed.
EXPLAIN THE DIFFERENT PAINT FINISHES - WHAT’S BEST WHERE?Any retailer or contractor can provide ‘sheen’ guidelines for func-
tionality and appearance as it hinges on many factors. With a good, quality paint you're safe in almost any room with an eggshell finish forwalls, semi-gloss for trim and doors, and flat for ceilings. A satin finishmay be a better choice for kitchens, bathrooms and kids’ rooms.
DO ONE-COAT PAINTS REALLY WORK? ARE HIGHER-END PAINTS WORTH IT?A lot of paints are labeled “paint and primer,” but rarely do they
promise “one coat” or deliver it. I endorse Behr’s version. It can changeany color, and give solid predictable results in two coats – even shadesof red, which are the hardest. Less expensive paints can cost youmore in labor and frustration to achieve the desired result.
WHEN TO HIRE A PRO?Hiring a contractor versus doing it yourself depends on how much
time you are willing to devote, an honest evaluation of your skills, andhow important the results are. After all, you'll have to live with them. Ifyou hire a painter, make sure they have good communications skills, and a primary goal of making you well pleased with the results.

When house hunting, the colors on the walls you encounter can speakvolumes. Whether it’s the stark white walls in a new home, or the out-dated hues in an older home, color (or the lack thereof) makes a bigimpression. Want to change things up and make the look your own?Enter Jim Norman, owner of Accentual Painting in Mishawaka. Normanhas been painting for 16 years, and has worked seven years behindthe paint desk at major home improvement stores. He started paintingbillboards right out of high school.
