Andrei Gillofi gives Advice on

how to Ask a Girl Out

* Keep on asking her out until she says yes!By the way this may take a while.

* Phone her up and say “I know this soundsWeird, but I really like you. Will you go outWith me?

* Give her candy and flowers and ask her out.* Write a song and dedicate it to her.* Write a letter asking her out.

få*“My Most Romantic Moment"

For our Valentine issue we asked ourteachers to share with us their most romanticmoment. We would like to thank our teachersfor their time and interest. Here are theresponses in the order in which we receivedthem.

Mrs. Davison:An old boy-friend of mine gave me a bunch ofEDELWEISS (small, velvety, white flowers -absolutely beautiful!) I dried them then Iframed them, and I have still got them.

Mr. Ashit:New years eve night,Someone turned down the light. And we weredancing to the slow. Oh so many yearsago ...... ..

Ms. Kala:South of France, in the Camargue area - landof marshes, Flamingos and taureaux (bulls).19.5 years old, walking with this very cuteyoung man, when, sight in the path, a friskylooking taureaux(bull)! The only way acrosswas through the marsh on the right. Without aword, he handed me his shoes, rolled up histrouser legs and carried me across in his armsunder the very suspicious gaze of the bull, while a flock of flamingoes winged its wayacross the blue sky. I often wondered, later, what if the bull had charged!

Mr. Sonnet:Romance is in the mind, isn”t it? (You know,

Page 4: SPECIAL VALENTINE ISSUE0… · Valentine°s day is sometimes called St. Valentine”s day. And that is the story of “yfzrleritines Day. Smyth and the art students unveil the murals

”Beauty is in the eye of the beholder.”) So Ibelieve the setting leads to a magical moment, assuming you’re with the right person.I was with my wife, Patty, in Central America. We happened to live near a natural hotsprings. I remember one full moon night relax-ing in the pools of the springs, under the light-ness of the moon and the Candles we wereburning on the rocks around the pool. Westayed all night talking and soothing ourselvesin the crystal water.

Ms. Goodman:I left the laboratory at college one Valentine'sDay to find someone waiting for me with arose and a poem. I barely knew the guy andwas very flattered. Unfortunately, I wasunable to return his affections and, a weeklater, we weren't on speaking terms..... I stillhave the poem.

Ms. SenIf a romantic moment is one that warms yourheart and makes you feel intensely alive then Ihave had several every summer. Up in ourhome in the mountains, watching the dawnlight up distant snow-covered peaks, andsitting on the patio at dusk with the starshanging low and bright out of a midnight-bluesky. It also helps to have someone reallyspecial share these moments of pure bliss!

Mr. IseriOn our first date my future wife and I went tosee the movie”Terms of Endearment” (Yes,it's a tearjerker!)

Ms. WillsonSitting beside my husband, on the banks of aNorthern Canada lake in Ontario in August at1:00 AM, watching the AuroraBorealis(Northern Lights) flash like fireworksacross the night sky. Magical!

Ms. Palmer-DoddsSitting atop “the cliffs” at the University ofBritish Columbia,(the cliffs right out in frontof the Museum of Anthropology.) On a hotsummer”s eve, watching the sun set with aspecial person, a good bottle of red Wine, anda great selection of breads, pates and cheeses. The ferries and sailboats race by and the tugsand barges push through the water. If it”s asuper day/evening you can see all the way toVancouver Island. I get chills just thinkingabout it.

Middle School Scribbler

Ms. SmythIt was Valentine”s Day of my Junior year incollege. I had less than an hour to:l. Rush from my last class back to the dorm,2. Bake a heart-shaped cake for my date,3. Change into a bridesmaid’s gown for afriend”s wedding and get to the church ontime! The chocolate cake was still warmwhen I quickly iced it white, sprinkled it withcinnamon hearts and put it into a doily-linedbox. After the wedding reception, Dickaccepted the box with great anticipitation. But unfortunately, the warm cake had crum-bled, the white icing had run, and the redhearts had melted into a smudgy, pink ooze.My Valentine gift looked like a garbagescowl going out to sea. Dick sampled acrumb and declared that it tasted a lot betterthan it looked. “Shall we have a professionalbake our wedding cake next June?” he asked.I promised to love, honor, and never bakeanother Valentine°s cake on the run, everagain.

Ms Walker:I think I”m married to a very romantic man,at least he always remembers occasions withflowers and poems-but something quite sweetthis year and suitably sloppy was on thebeach in Goa at New year, when he got ahenna tattoo with a heart and my name in it. Itried to persuade William to have like thistoo!

Ms. Canning:Romance, for me, was seeing and

feeling each of my newborn children. Myhusband and I both felt undeniably in love.

Ms. Kapner:Wow, what a hard question, as I seem

to have many romantic moments. To getdown just to one, I “ve decided that it mustbe a recent one related to our time here inIndia. That one magical, romantic momentwould have been on Christmas eve inJ aiselmer when we could see the most beauti-

ful full moon out over the desert. I realizedthat all the world sees this moon, and thus, the world is one. If we could all love eachother as one, wouldn”t the world be a roman-tic place?

Ms. Campbell:Uno de mis momentos más romanti-

cos fue con mi esposo claro! pero fue antes

årStar- Crossed Lovers

By Ana Perschbacher

Even though Valentines Day is aboutlove and happy endings, we thought readerswould be interested to read about romanceswith not-so happy endings. The definition ofstar-crossed is a love that ends sadly; either indeath or divorce.

The most famous of these is the tragictale of“Romeo and Juliet". This is the tale ofthe enmity between the Monagues and theCapulets, and the Supreme love betweenRomeo, a Montague, and Juliet, aCapuleLThe story ends in the Suicide of bothof these star-crossed lovers.

Another work of Shakespeafs is“Anthony and Cleopatra? Mark Anthony andQueen Cleopatra of all Egypt fell deeply inlove when Anthony leaving his wife Octaviabehind in Rome, went to command the con-quering Roman army in Egypt. Their lovelives for ever in Shakespeare°s play of thatname. Both of them committed suicide.

Elizabeth Taylor and Richard Burtonwere both great actors. She is American andhe was British. They met when filming themulti-million dollar movie “Cleopatra”. In“Cleopatra” she was Cleopatra and he actedas Mark Anthony. They fell in love while

.filming the movie and scandalized the world. After a fiery marriage they separated and laterdivorced. Many years later they met againand married at the romantic setting of

Victoria Falls in Zimbabwe. Yet again thismarriage did not last. Two years later theydivorced.

Lisa Marie Presley and MichaelJacksonweresecretlymarried intheDominicanRepublic,at a timewhen hewasreceiving alot of badpublicity. Both mul-timillio-naires ofshow business, they claim to have fallen inlove when they first met. ln public theyseemed to be very supportive of each other, but eighteen months later they separated anddivorced. They still claim to be good friends.

The marriage of the century wasbetween the eligible British Prince Charlesand the lovely Diana Spencer. They were ahandsome, popular couple well suited to eachother; after two sons were born to them signsof strain appeared in their relationship even inpublic. Their divorce last year received asmuch publicity as their marriage.

*3?Why Do We Make A Big Deal About

Valentines Day?

By Seth Shapo

Usually when you think of Valentines Day,you think of being nice to your sweetheart,giving special, heartfelt gifts, or basicallybeing nice to the opposite gender. But, thatisn’t the meaning of Valentines and weshouldn”t express it in that way! Basically,we’ve got the whole thing totally wrong.Here”s the story;

Once upon a time, far away in a littletown on an island off the shore of Italy, therewas a man named Doesnte HaveliféValentioli whom the people called a saintbecause he was a very kind person and a verylonely man (heh, heh). Anyway, he wasindeed a very lonely man and he did haveneeds, of a romantic type. He then conjuredup a little plan to be very nice to everyone,

Middle School Scribbler

just so that he could get some friends. But, ashe tried to be friendly just out of the blue, people began to be afraid of him. He was notbeing bitter and malicious, as the human racetends to be, so he was seen as an oddball. This spurned him on to be more eager in hisefforts to please everyone. In his little questfor companionship, he ran into a man of avery violent nature. But, since this violentman was getting very annoyed he just killedValentioli on the spot. Some good-heartedpeasant reported this to the king and the kingof the little island held the violent man ontrial. All the inhabitants of the town wereasked if this man should be executed for hisdastardly deed. The peasants then repliedwith a thundering no because they had rec-ognized the corpse as the oddball, Valentioli. So, after that fateful day, the king held anannual celebration which would solely bethere to warn people to go with the flow orelse.

Somehow the way this ceremony iscelebrated now is different, but it still has thesame meaning: DON’T BE OVERLY NICEAND DO NOT DARE TO BEDIFFERENT OR YOU WILL SUFFERTHE CONSEQUENCES!!

In Morocco, I

was at anAmerican school, but unfortunately Iwas a little tooyoung to realisethe differences between the American andBritish systems. Now, on the other hand, I seethe differences out right! For example, I’m inthe 7th Grade here, while in the U.K. I wouldbe in year eight. At first, I didn`t like the ideaof going back a year, but when I came in forthe first time, I realised that there were almostno differences between a British year eightand an American 7th Grade! There are lots ofreasons why I enjoy it here but, the main oneis because all the people at A.E.S. are veryfriendly, accepting and outgoing. I think thatI°ll enjoy my stay!

bably going to get a better education here, though. What is really different here, is thateverybody starts and quits at the same time. InSweden, you would quit at different timesalmost everyday. The schedules are quite dif-ferent too. We didn't have a block schedule. We had a schedule that had all the sameclasses at the same time each week. When Istarted, it wasn°t so hard getting aroundbecause everybody helped me.When people ask me about my start at A.E.S,I have to admit that I'm not thrilled, but it`sokay!!

by Arjun N

Dear Daisy:I have a very big problem. My

third, fourth and fifth period teachers aregiving me a hard time. They don”t let me doanything that I want to do. Even when Iwhisper, they tell me to be quiet. It seems likethey are always watching me. All of the stud-ents, in my classes, talk for hours and hoursand the teachers d0n’t say anything to them.

From: Tired of Being Picked On

Dear Tired of Being Picked On:

Well, maybe you should try totalk to your teachers about your problem.Perhaps, you are whispering or talking at thewrong time. Or maybe, you are saying inap-propriate things. It seems that you haven’:proven yourself behaviorally. Three teachersusually d0n’t gang up on a student. I think yourteachers will understand if you talk to them.Tell them that you think that you are picked on- they should understand. Good Luck!

Dear Daisy:My parents are very strict with

me. They always check my assignment bookand backpack. They don”t seem to trust me.When there is an exam, they lock me in myroom for the entire day. I am to study the entireday. They also make me study a week before

the exam. On weekends, they wake me up at8:30 and make me follow the same scheduleas I have in school . For ex: I have Englishfirst period and they make me do English for45 minutes and then History and so on. Evenwhen I don°t have homework in a subject -they make me do extra work on the subject. IfI don”t get an A, on a subject they ground me

for two months at the least. This way, I can`tdo 'anything fun. What can I do?

From: The Bored One.

Dear Bored One.Well, your parents have high

expectation of you. They must think that youare incapable of getting good grades andhandling your responsiblities. But I do under-stand that your life is boring. Well. maybeyou should try and talk to them. lf they tloirtagree - I tloirt know what you can do.

Sometimes, myparents make our servant do chores for him.while I never get the servant to do anythingfor me - even clean up my room. They hateme. What can I do?

Dear Hated One!With age comes responsibility.

Your brother is probably able to go to moreplaces than you and must pay for more thingsout of his own money. Since he is older hetran go to more places such as discos etc.Stxhe needs ten dollars more than you do togo to al] the places that he goes to. A.E.S. Construction Pains

Love, Daisy

By Nishant Mathur

Although I know that the construction

Middle School Scribbler

irritations are only temporary, I would like topoint out some bothers so maybe a person inauthority could do something about them. The main problem, in my opinion, is that ofparking. Before the construction started, carsparked at gates one, two, three, four, five, six, seven, and eight. Now, cars can only park atgates one, two, and six. At gates one and twoyou can”t park on the school premises nor infront of the ACSA gate, so you have to parkon the streets, which is illegal. Gate numbersix is a very far distance, for most middleschoolers, to walk. The school has noparking facilities on its premises.

Another problem is that we don’thave an adequate amount of open space. This applies to the whole school, not justjunior high. First, we use to have the HighSchool Field , the Upper Courts, the B.U.Field, and a smaller field near the HighSchool Field. As most people know, two ofthese fields have been removed and with theincrease in numbers, the amount of openspace is not enough. A couple years ago, whenour school population was as low a 650people, we would have had enough space, but now with over l,000students we haveeven less space to move. I believe that thetwo problems forementioned are the twobiggest ones.

A minor issue is also noise pollution, but that doesn”t really seem to bother manypeople. Because we seem to be lacking inspace, and because we seem to be headingtowards higher enrolment numbers, I proposethat A.E.S. buy the land around the jhuggiarea. If the school can”t buy the land aroundthe jhuggi area for whatever reason, it couldbuy the land in close proximity. There seemsto be a lot of open land about. The elementa-ry school could then, be separate and off thiscampus. I know that it would cost a lot, butthink about the future. Eventually the schoolis going to get bigger and we are going to run «out of space. What will A.E.S. do then? Buyland of course. Look at the way the landprices are going. Do you really think thatprices will drop after 15-20 years, to a pricelower than now? Buy now for tomorrow andthink of the future. Find some parking spots

in the mean time!!

Rating: ***^

F atal Fury 2- This fighting game hasa similar concept to that of Street FighterTwo, except with this game, you can moveback and forth while dodging attacks. Youcan play against another person or challengethe computer. This game is better played inan arcade. It doesn”t transfer well to yourhome system. It's more fun when you”replaying against someone else.

This game is a great onebecause it is laced with strategy.

Well... I”ve researched some info forus all!!!

Photography Club - Mr. Gupta ; EveryWednesday

Thoughts from Mr. Gupta

-What is your goal?Well, to make good photographers and to

improve their skills.-What attractions does photography have?

Images.-Is that why you started into photography?I’m a visual person so, yes. Photography

gives me good inspirations.-If you had a golden opportunity, what you

wish for?To open a photography school.

-Please give us a brief closing comment.Photography is a creative skill and people

should not look it as a recording media, but asa creative art.

Art Club - Mrs. Smythe ; Every Friday

Mrs. Smythe’s Thoughts-What activities are you involved in right

now?We are collecting trash that people do not

want like old sun glasses, empty tins, eggcartons etc. we want to create a sculpture.-What attraction does art have?

It’s always full of surprises. Art can turn outto be very beautiful, even if it is made fromjunk. When looking at our sculpture, one cansee a whole new sculpture or of course, itcould be less attractive then the original junk.-Is that why you develop a career in art?No, I was born with the ability to see beauti-

ful possibilities out of every thing and so fromthe beginning, before I could walk or talk, Icould look and appreciate art. I wanted toshare this view, so I became a teacher of 'art-If you had a wish for art, what would youwish for?I”m more interested in helping others to

become beautiful artists!!!

-Please give us a brief closing message.Everyone can become a better artist. You

don°t have to be born with a special ability.Using what you have and practising is themost important part. Anyone can prove this tothemselves, by coming to M-lfi every Friday

right now, we are going to debate.-Please give us a elosing comment. To be a good debater, you need to be a good

The second numberwas set to the music of Handel. It was lively, happy and full of movement unlike The ThreeEpitaphs which was moumful, sad andsometimes funny.

Even though they didn’t have theircostumes or their props, they still got a greatapplause. They used humour in the firstdance, which made it enjoyable to watch. Allthe performers were great athletes. Thewomen were very graceful, while the menwere muscular and lumbering. They werevery enthusiastic in their work, and you couldsee that they were enjoying themselves.

THE BEST MOVIES 1996

By Robin Borjesson

1996 was a banner year for great movies. The following reviews some of the morepopular releases. If you Can’t catch them on the big screen, try to find them at your favoritevideo store or ask your relatives to send them from abroad.

INDEPENDENCE DAYSTARRIN G: WILL SMITH, BILL PULLMAN, JEFF GOLDBLUM.

This science fiction movie is about a “bunch” of aliens who intend to invade the earthover the fourth of July weekend. Fifteen huge ships settle atop ofthe major cities of the world, causing panic throughout. After the aliens destroy the major cities, the remaining humans try acounter attack which is unsuccessful. Everything seems seems hopeless until one of the main

Page 27: SPECIAL VALENTINE ISSUE0… · Valentine°s day is sometimes called St. Valentine”s day. And that is the story of “yfzrleritines Day. Smyth and the art students unveil the murals

February 14, 1997 Page 27

characters (Jeff Goldblum) finds out a way to “turn off' the alien’s biggest secret. Next, wehave a bang, bang “shoot ‘em” up scene á la Star Wars, and ofcourse, the humans are now vic-torious. This is a very good action flick and especially thrilling if you watch it on the big screen.

JINGLE ALL THE WAYST ARRING: ARNOLD SCHWARTZNEGGER

This comic movie has Arnie playing the role of a Confused dad who is desperately tryingto find the perfect toy for his son for Christmas. After wading through all of the shops in thearea, he has to face the “terrible” truth: the toy that his son wants for Christmas is sold out. Henow has to compete against another dad with the same problem. When trying to competivelyfind the elusive toy, he exposes himself to great dangers such as being chased by angry rein-deers. This is a very funny movie with lots of laughs and scenes that cheer you up. So if youhappen to be in a bad mood and in a mood to see a comic Christmas tale, I recommend thismovie.

THE ROCKSTARRING: SEAN CONNERY, NICHOLAS CAGE

Eighty-three of General Francis Hummel`s soldiers died during a secret military opera-tion. When he fails to secure benefits and recognition for the families of his dead soldiers, hedecides to take control of Alcatraz Island. He does this with the aid of a few hand - picked, highly skilled marines. He then threatens to launch chemical Weapons on the San Fransisco BayArea. The government then turns to chemical gas expert, Stanley Godspeed, and a long timeconvict whose claim to fame is that he’s the only man to have escaped from the Island prison. The convict has an intimate knowledge of Alcatraís subterranean, which might lead to thesuccess of the governmenfis mission.

This is a movie with lots of action and excitement — you never get bored. Sean Connerydoes an excellent job in playing the role of the English secret agent who has been kept in prisonfor a life time, by the American government without a trail, and Nicholas Cage is brilliantly castas the happy- go -lucky chemical gas expert. I highly recommend this movie if you°re lookingfor an unrealistic experience.

SPY HARDSTARRING: LESLIE NIELSEN

Leslie is playing the role of a secret agent called WD - 40 in this outrageously funnyparody of the spy world. He is assigned to ruin the evil plan of his arch enemy General Rancor -a tyrannical madman who lost two limbs in an explosion. Rancor is now armed and very dan-gerous, so WD - 40’s mission is to prevent him from destroying the world. WD - 40 must alsorescue the daughter of his former partner, and, of course, do some uncover work with a sexyfellow agent. Guided by a spy chief who disguises himself as office furniture, WD - 40 plansto...(sorry the rest is Classified - find out more about the movie by watching it).

This movie is so full of sick humor that you barely understand the plot, but if you want agood, but strange, laugh take it in.

BRAVEHEARTSTARRING (AND DIRECTING): MEL GIBSON

This is a sweeping story about Scotland”s brutal battle for independence in the l3thcentury. When William Wallace”s (Mel Gibson) wife is murdered by English troops, his questfor revenge quickly turns into an impassioned fight for his country”s freedom. The tales ofWallace”s bravery spread fast, and encourage every commoner to take arms against the Englishand escalate their crusade into a full scale war.

Page 28: SPECIAL VALENTINE ISSUE0… · Valentine°s day is sometimes called St. Valentine”s day. And that is the story of “yfzrleritines Day. Smyth and the art students unveil the murals

Page 28 Middle School Scribbler

It is a very “bloody” and emotional movie which stays in your mind weeks after you see it. Oiieof Mel Gibsonls best movies yet.

which still seems to work for them. A fantastic album. A must to have.

Presidents of the United States of America-IIWhat can you say about the PUSA? Wait, I think I found the Words for them. They are

the worst band this world has ever seen. Their stupid ideas of originality like not having a fullset of strings on their guitars, is a total put on. Basically, I think these guys are the biggest losersin the world. You don”t even have to hear them. Words of advice: Do not support these morons.

Pearl Jam-No CodeNo Code is Pearl J am”s fourth album and they are still a great band. Pearl Jam fans

might be Surprised at how mellow this album is, but that is due to the influence of new PearlJam drummer, Jack Irons. Overall, the album is pretty good, with some high points with songslike “Mankind” and more low points than the last three albums have had. This album should bea priority on your CD list.

As you can see, there have been some definite high points (Pearl J am”s No Code), andsome very obvious low points (Presidents of the United States of America's II). We at the scrib-bler think that this year in music has been pretty good. Look over your own collection of musicfrom the year of nineteen hundred and ninety-six and see if you think the same.

It's a fresh new year and there's only one semester to work through. This is a round up ofthe most significant things that have happened in the last semester of 1996.

*Because of the dreaded monsoon rains, the MSGA pool party at the beginning of the yearwas postponed three times.

*There was a slight change in this year's mini-course. The regular 7th grade and 8th gradeplaces were switched around, the 7th grade going to Camp Corbett while the Sth gradewent to Rishikesh.

*The Middle School students performed an excellent musical, "The Pirates of Penzance"written by Gilbert and Sullivan.

*Parties organised by the MSGA were enjoyed by the students.

*There was an interesting debate within the Sth grade US history classes in which MiddleSchool students had the opportunity to Vote for the best US president based on the Sthgrade speeches. Before the US elections the 8th grade class organised a debate in thetheater. Students were divided into three groups representing the three presidential candi-dates and answered questions put to them.

`"“We had a few India Forums in the Theater when invited guests spoke to the MiddleSchool students on various interesting topics like VVildlife in India and Mahatma Gandhi.

"There was a swim meet in Dhaka where the AES Swim Team won first place. W 'ay to goFalcons!!
