On Saturday, June 11, long-time Louis Brier resident Sylvia Hill was honoured during Shabbat services. Sylvia was being honoured for her work as President of the Louis Brier Resident’s Council, for recently celebrating her 103 birthday and for the upcoming milestone of having resided at the Louis Brier for 25 years! Binny
Goldman, long-serving volunteer and Louis Brier champion in her own right attended the event on Saturday and penned an email of her thoughts of the day.
Here is Binny’s letter:
Shalom - We paid glorious homage to a woman who really
is the face as well as the heart of Louis Brier... our own Sylvia
Hill. Stan (Shear) was superb in his role of Cantor of our
congregation taking all those listening to the heights with his
heart-melting chanting, his choice of nigunim as well as the
words he used in praising Sylvia. The congregation... those
gathered and those visiting all felt the love permeating the
room. Syd’s (Goldberg) warm words while presenting the wrist
corsage also echoed what was felt by the many there who
were moved by this special service Neil’s (Simces) chanting
of the haftorah was a pleasurable discovery on my part...
as to the depth of knowledge and ability present in our LB
congregation. Maurice (Moses) and Stan’s voices blending
with Syd’s , Neil’s and the added voices of those attending -
created a spontaneous choir that didn’t rehearsing to delight
everyone. Yasher Koach to all.. Sylvia glowed..basking in a well
deserved and beautifully orchestrated tribute. Todah Rabbah..
inadequate..but I say it anyway. It will remain in my memory
and in those who were there today - as a rare moment in
time. Kol Hakavod. Grateful thanks to all. - Binny

With Canada’s 150th birthday on the first of July, we have the opportunity to celebrate our beautiful country, and to reflect on what it means to be Canadian. Beyond maple syrup, beavers, hockey, and Tim Horton’s – Canada’s identity can be a little bit tricky to nail down. It is often said that our diversity is what defines us, and I also think that our moments of collective pride and accomplishment help to shape who we are as a nation. Here is a short list of some of our country’s proudest moments, perhaps you remember some of them!
Women at the Voting Booths - 1916 In 1917, we became the 10th country to grant women voting rights, thanks to the efforts of young political activist Nellie McClung.Insulin Discovered - 1921Thanks to the breakthrough work of Canadians Frederick Banting and Charles Best, we are able to produce large quantities of highly refined insulin, assisting in the treatment of hundreds of millions of people affected by diabetes.Liberating the Netherlands - 1945 In the final months of the Second World War, Canadian forces were given the important task of liberating the Netherlands from Nazi occupation. Today, Canada is fondly remembered by the Dutch for saving the lives of many and ending their oppression.First Canadian Woman in Space - 1992In 1992, we sent Roberta Bondar into orbit as the first neurologist and more importantly, the first Canadian female in space.Vancouver Olympics - 2010The exciting two weeks back in 2010 were extremely important for Canadian history, especially because of the 14 gold medals in sports such as skating, hockey and skiing. The highlights include Sidney Crosby and the “golden goal” in the final minutes against the US in the men’s hockey final, and the skier Alexandre Bilodeau winning the first golden medal for Canada.

MESSAGE FROM THE RABBI
On July 11th, the Jewish world will observe Shiva Asar B’Tammuz, the 17th day
of Tammuz. On this day, in the year 70 CE, the Roman forces breached the walls of the city of Jerusalem. For those whose health allows, it is ob-served as a day of fasting. This day ushers in the “Three Weeks,” a period of mourning which leads up to the saddest day on the Jewish calendar, the 9th of Av.
On the 17th of Tammuz, take a moment to reflect on how you can increase your love for your neighbour. You’ll be adding another brick to the building of the Third Temple, may it come speedily in our days. Amen.

ZINA SCHIFF VIOLINIST
THURSDAY, JULY 132:15 - 2:45pmHOMESIDE LOUNGE
We are extremely pleased to announce that renowned violinist Zina Schiff will be performing at the Louis Brier for a performance this month. California-born violinist Zina Schiff has been described by the New York Times as an instrumentalist of “Luscious high voltage...vintage Heifetz.” The comparison to the legendary Heifetz is apt, as Zina is a Heifetz protégé. With her special blend of passion, poetry and communicative power, she has dazzled audiences throughout the world.
Zina’s has amassed many awards, some of which include the Young Musicians Foundation Debut Award, the San Francisco Symphony Foundation Award, and a grant from the Martha Baird Rockefeller Fund for Music.
As a student at The Curtis Institute of Music, she won both the Junior and Senior Auditions of the Philadelphia Orchestra. Named one of the “Top Ten College Winners” by Glamour Magazine during her senior year at the University of California at Berkeley, Zina was selected as an “Outstanding Young Artist” by Musical America and honored as a “Distinguished Alumna” by Louisiana State University in Shreveport, where she earned her masters degree in liberal arts. She also completed a Master of Jewish Studies degree from Spertus Institute. Her artistry has been described as “pure perfume.” We hope that you will agree.
*Ms. Schiff will also be performing at Ryerson United Church on Sun. July 16 at 7:30 PM tickets are $20 at the door.

Q: Are there supplements that can help improve dementia?
A: Supplements are a multibillion dollar industry and most are unnecessary. In particular for dementia there is no evidence that any supplement prevents dementia or improves memory. Vitamin E may decrease how quickly dementia progresses, but it is also linked to higher death rates in older women. Other supplements linked to harmful side effects include Gingko Biloba decreasing the effectiveness of anti-seizure medication, Vitamin A increasing the risk of lung cancer in smokers, and garlic thinning the blood. At Louis Brier we focus on behavioural measures for dementia including mental and physical exercise and proper nutrition.

On June 8th we celebrated a well-respected community member and talented poet, Judy Chusid. Due to a love of Torah scholarship, we chose to honour Judy by an all-day ‘learning’ in the tradition of Shavuot. Her original poem:
We, me.Barley doesn’t feel like springYounger than springtime am I
Thy people will be my people, thy G-d my G-dWe, me!
