Building a Honda storeThe new Wilder Honda building at 133 Jetta

Way in Port Angeles opened for business quietly on Monday, Nov. 3, 2014, with little fanfare.

That doesn’t mean Wilder Auto isn’t excited about it. It is.

With the Nissan, Chrysler, Jeep, Ram, Dodge, Volkswagon and Honda lines all sharing the same space, the Wilder Auto Center building was bursting at the seams.

“I decided that we needed to expand,” said founder and co-owner Dan Wilder Sr.

“Then I thought what would be the car line with the most potential and growth. And that was Honda.”

Honda, he noted, has the highest repeat customer rate compared to any other make.

Wide-open spacesLike the open floor plan in a home, the new Honda

store connects the service shop to the sales area. “This is like the old downtown store where parts,

service and sales were all together,” said Wilder Sr.Built to exacting Honda standards that determined

the color of the tile and the type of furniture, the showroom is clearly identifiable as a Honda-only store.

There was only one small variant to the design. To address one of his biggest concerns, Wilder Sr.

had a pair of large side windows added to his office giving him a wider view of the car lot so he can see when visitors drive up and alert staff to greet them.

Among the first things customers notice as they enter the Honda showroom is all the glass, light and

space, accentuated by a soaring ceiling.“It’s all about customers,” Wilder Sr. said. “If you can make it nice for them and make it

comfortable, I think they’re more likely to continue to do business with you.”

Customers sit at bistro-style tables and discuss cars with sales consultants outside the stuffy confines of an office.

The service shop waiting room is also open to the showroom but cozy enough to curl up with a book and while away the time enjoying a cup of coffee and a donut or fresh fruit.

Working With local contractorsWilder Auto has relied on local contractor J&J

Construction of Port Angeles Inc. to build all three of its stores: the Toyota store, Wilder Auto Center and the Honda store.

General manager Dan Wilder Jr. believes dealing with a local contractor and its regular subcontractors has been a distinct advantage.

“Especially at the end when it’s crunch time. It’s crazy time,” said Wilder Jr., who runs the day-to-day operations at the dealership.

“Everyone pulled out all the stops to keep us on schedule.”

Wilder Auto upgraded its Internet connection to business grade high-speed fiber optics to ensure faster, more reliable service for the service technicians and the new Internet-based telephone system.

Wilder Jr. cites Scott Jensen at Angeles Communications for burning the midnight oil and working with Wave Broadband to ensure the communications system was up and running by Oct. 31 for the soft opening on Nov. 3.

Scott’s brother Bob Jensen, who works for Wave Broadband, had set up the communications systems for the other two Wilder stores, so he was also familiar with Wilder operations.

Wilder Jr. approached him about getting the fiber optics installed in a timely manner.

“It’s one of the great things about a small town,” said Wilder Jr.

“Even though you’re working with a big national corporation, the local staff can make things happen.”

Visiting the shoWroom“One of the big things about people coming here

now is that it is not going to feel so congested,” said Wilder Sr.

The expanded lot has added about 25 new parking spaces at the Honda store and opened up around 30 extra parking spaces at the other stores.

Customers shouldn’t encounter the frustration of not being able to find a place to park.

Service & PartsService and parts are key to the Wilder Auto way of

doing business.Servicing the vehicle you own now is as important

to the dealership as selling you a new one.For this, Wilder Honda has built a state-of-the-

art shop for service technicians trained in the latest automotive technology.

serVice FacilityThe Honda store service garage is built to the

manufacturer’s specifications. The roughly 4,500-square-foot garage has 11 service

bays, one of which is reserved for express service.Although it is larger than needed at this time, it is

the minimum size permitted by Honda, and Wilder Honda sees it as a boon that will help meet the increased demand for service as Honda sales grow.

Said co-owner Dan Wilder Sr., “We have lots of room to grow, and we’re hoping that we’re going to grow.”

Each bay has an environmentally friendly in-ground lift that is completely sealed.

Even if one were to leak, the lift runs on vegetable oil, further ensuring against polluting the surrounding earth.

Another advantage of the in-ground lift is: The

posts are under the vehicle instead of around it, removing the potential for dings.

Two large entrance portals on the south side of the building facilitate quick processing of incoming vehicles for service.

“Customers are able to drive inside when the weather is inclement, get out of their car and come into a controlled climate area,” said Arlin Lidstrom, the Wilder Honda’s service and parts director.

“The result is the customers are very satisfied.”Vehicles exit on the north side of the building, and

there is an additional garage door on the east side.With the high, airplane-hangar-like ceiling and

multiple entry and exit portals, the service shop is well ventilated.

In addition, coiled hoses that attach to vehicle tailpipes hang from an overhead network of pipes that channel exhaust to the outside.

A compound mixed into the cement lightens the color of the cement making it unnecessary to paint the floors.

The brighter floor color reflects light illuminating the entire garage. Unlike the garages of old, there is not a dark corner in the entire shop.

“I like working in this new garage,” said service technician Jonathan Wood.

“It’s brighter and roomier.”An unexpected byproduct has been a harder

cement surface that resists chipping when heavy tools are dropped on it.

Technicians frequently attend off-site training workshops at Shoreline Community College Professional Automotive Training Center, which offers factory-sponsored programs for Honda, Chrysler and Toyota vehicles.

Dan Wilder Sr. estimates there is at least one technician in training every week from one of his automotive shops.

“Cars are so complicated now. It’s not the guy with big muscles who can turn the wrench; it’s the guy who can understand computers,” Wilder said.

Wilder Honda offers express service for routine maintenance, such as oil and filter changes and tire rotation.

The turnaround time for express service is generally 30 minutes and includes a complimentary multipoint vehicle inspection.

The multipoint inspection, which is performed on all vehicles brought in for any servicing, lets the car owner know the current state of his or her car.

The inspection checks on tire, wiper blade and brake pad wear, engine flu-ids, lights and signals and other often overlooked maintenance issues.

The final touch on service at Wilder Honda is the complimentary car wash — an option that is seldom refused.

In fact, Wilder washes as many as 80 to 90 cars a day.

Wilder Auto takes its car washes se-riously — seriously enough to have its own dedicated staff and Wilder family member, employee care manager Tami Rose, assigned to oversee the procedure.

The wash starts with a pressure wash to remove road scum and other particulate matter that could scratch the car finish during washing.

An automatic car wash facility is in the pipeline at the Honda store, but for

now, rather than send the cars to line up at the Toyota store, cars are washed by hand.

When customers are in a hurry and do not have time to wait for a car wash on the day of service, Wilder Auto offers a token that can be used at a later date.

“The foundation of our business is parts and service,” said Dan Wilder Sr.

“We love to sell cars, but if we can’t take care of our customers what are the chances they will come back to buy a car?”

The customer care department is an integral compo-nent of Wilder Auto’s approach to service.

Owner Dan Wilder Sr. believes that employee train-ing is key to a business’ overall success.

“I don’t want to just sell you a car,” he said. “I want to be your auto dealer for life.”

To ensure that in-shop customers aren’t kept waiting at the counter while the service adviser is on the phone handling a customer who has called in for information or an appointment, Wilder has hired dedicated staff to handle all incoming calls.

“Ten years ago, when Dan hired me, it was atypical for a dealership to hire one person just to do customer care,”said Nadean Portner, manager of the Customer Care Department, who had nearly 20 years of customer service experience at Northwest Orient Airlines at the time.

There are currently seven operators manning the phones in customer care, working in shifts that keep at least two to three at the phones from 7:30 a.m. to 6:30 p.m. Monday through Friday and 8:30 a.m to 6 p.m. on Saturday.

In addition to scheduling service, the customer care staff follows up each service and sale with a call to check on customer satisfaction.

“We call them back to make sure they are happy and that they had a good experience,” said Wilder Sr.

“If they didn’t have a good experience, I want to know it right away. I want everyone to be totally satisfied.”
