"One of the best things about outreach is that the referral form is straightforward and

concise! We also had quick responses to whether our school could receive support and staff came to visit within a couple of weeks. Staff who came out to the school listened to us, observed and then worked with us through a professional discussion to make recommendations. It was really useful to have access to experienced staff both to pick their brains and hear their advice. Our school have found outreach invaluable in supporting children with complex SEND and the results have been improved access to mainstream education for the pupils".

Linda Alliband - SENCO Oakhill Primary School July 2016

The vision for Special School Outreach in Stoke-on-Trent is a provision that:

capacity, sustainability and confidence in our mainstream settings.

If you require support for a particular pupil in your school or setting who has a statement, EHC plan/diagnosis of special educational needs, you will need to complete and return a referral form.

Alternatively, you can request a form by contacting John Roberts, SEN Inclusion Officer, on 01782 232835or e-mail: [email protected] or contact schools directly.

Additional information can be found on the following :www.stoke.gov.uk/specialschooloutreachwww.stoke.gov.uk/localoffer

“Kemball Special School have been key in supporting individual children at St Paul’s. Filling in the Outreach form has allowed a number of our children to benefit from the specialist staff, facilities and also a shared placement. Through this support, we as a school have gained skills which are transferrable to other children, allowing us to meet a wide range of needs. All staff have made us feel welcome and are very friendly. Many thanks”.

Portland School and Specialist College is a school for pupils with Social, Emotional and Mental Health needs (SEMH). The school has 100 places for pupils aged between 6 - 16 years.

We offer a comprehensive curriculum throughout the key stages which concludes with GCSE and BTEC qualifications taken in year 11.

Pupils are also encouraged to develop life skills which will enable them to become more independent as they approach adulthood.

Outreach Support

The Crisis Prevention Institute (CPI) MAPA We look at the legal framework, de-escalation and physical intervention skills. School’s policies are also reviewed with respect to the use of physical intervention strategies. Portland School and Specialist College offers courses up to two days out of school which cover the theory around the use of physical intervention strategies, and then the practice of low and medium level physical interventions. Access can be negotiated with Portland School and Specialist College to join our three day training course covering low, medium and high levels of physical interventions. These physical intervention strategies are now referred to as Foundation, Emergency and Advanced skills. We work closely with the referring school to ensure we deliver the right amount of training and the absolute correct level of physical intervention strategies required to meet the presenting needs.

£70.00 per person per day

Behaviour Management Strategies

Individual pupil supportOnce a referral has been received we will telephone the referring school to discuss the presenting difficulties and then arrange to visit school to carry out an observation. Following the observation a report will be written and shared with the school. A plan of support can then be written and implemented in school by the referring school’s staff. This plan will be reviewed and ‘tweaked’ as appropriate before evaluating the impact at the end of the academic year.

Packages of supportOnce a referral has been received we will telephone the referring school to discuss the presenting difficulty and arrange to visit the school to meet with staff and discuss the referral in greater detail. We will then agree the specific support needed and write up a plan. The plan will outline the support we will be giving and may include visits to Portland School and Specialist College for staff to share good practice and to put everything into context. The package of support plan will be reviewed and ‘tweaked’ as necessary before evaluating the impact at the end of the academic year.

Attachment Aware Schools TrainingLooking at the impact of early childhood attachment and trauma and it's impact on development and resilience.

Emotion CoachingAlternative strategies for supporting young people with Social, Emotional and Mental Health needs to recognise emotions and their impact on behaviour and relationships.

Positive PsychologyLooking at the language used when speaking to or directing young people.

As part of our Behaviour Management Strategies Package we can offer individual pupil support and/or packages of support for teaching and support staff. Included in our behaviour strategies ‘tool box’ are twilight sessions at Portland School and Specialist College on:

• Managing the child on the Trauma Continuum• Introduction to Attachment and Trauma – Attachment Awareness• Introduction to Emotion Coaching• Positive Psychology• Behaviour Data Systems• Choices maps/cycles• Verbal escalation model• Crisis developmental model• RESPONSE model• COPING model
