Hello Central Florida Branch Members! This year has gone by so fast, and my term as the Chair is coming to an end in just a few short days! We had an acve fall kicking it off in September with our Branch Meeng and social at the Main Event in Orlando. We had so much fun bowling and playing video games, that we decided to make that an annual event. Then in October, we had a lunch-n-learn in Viera where Mike Wahlstedt of TranSystems presented on the 2 nd ever Diverging Diamond in the state located in Brevard County. We also had a small group volunteer at Give Kids the World on October 13. In November, we went to the UCF vs. Cincinna football game, not to menon the pre-game tailgang going on! December was our Holiday Meeng at Taverna Opa restaurant where we indulged in all the food and it was AMAZING!! A definite place to go back to! I would be remiss not to menon their belly dancer and our one and only Chair-elect, David Wilkison, dancing on the table! We have video to prove itView Video. (Sorry, Davidnot really!) Then in January 2019 Chad Rishar and John Gilreath of DRMP presented on a Post-Hurricane Irma flood abatement project and Cate Thompson from ADS presented on flexible and rigid stormwater conveyance systems and gave us all a comprehensive tour of their plant in Winter Garden. On February 27, Raquel Floyd presented on controlling project risk through scheduling best pracces. Lastly, the Public Works Expo hosted by the Florida Chapter is going on as I write this arcle - April 15-19 in Daytona Beach, FL. The event started with the Central Florida Branch Scholarship Fundraiser Golf Tournament at the Spruce Creek Country Club located at 1900 County Club Drive, Port Orange, FL 32128. Then a variety of Technical Sessions designed to sharpen your skills, maximize producon and keep you on the cung edge of emerging technologies and products, as well as aend the Trade Show where you can acquire new tools, ps and techniques from the leading suppliers and manufacturers in the Public Works industry! 2019 Dates To Be Announced

If interested in attending our next Volunteer Day, please contact our

Volunteer Chair, Justin Hetu at [email protected]

Central Florida Branch supports Give Kids the World Quarterly Landscape Work Day! The CFB organizes a quarterly Landscape Work Day in which we work for half of the day (8:00am-

12:00pm) planting flowers in two of the landscaping beds in the Village. These landscaping beds surround

the Castle of Miracles, which includes the Star Tower, one of the most reverent places in the entire village.

The Give Kids the World Village was founded in 1986 to provide a week of paradise for families of children

afflicted with terminal or life-

threatening diseases when

they get their wish of visiting

Walt Disney World and other

Central Orlando attractions.

The team has a great time

planting flowers and making

the village even more

beautiful for the visitors. We

look forward to the next

work day which will be

announced soon. We hope

that more of our Branch

members can attend to

support this great

organization here in Central

Florida!

For Information on how to

become a volunteer, please

contact Justin Hetu, City of

Kissimmee via email at:

Educational & Technical

Lunch-n-Learns

Diverging Diamond—Viera, FL

On October 10, 2018 at the Pizza Gallery & Grill in Viera (Brevard County), we were treated to a great presentation on

the planning and design of the Diverging Diamond Interchange

(DDI) currently under construction at Viera Blvd. and I-95 in

Brevard County. Mike Wahlstedt, Leader of the Traffic

Engineering and Planning Group at TranSystems, presented on

the Viera Diverging Diamond Interchange (DDI). Mike spoke

about the planning and design of the Viera DDI and other DDI’s

and creative interchanges TranSystems has designed throughout the U.S. The DDI at I-95 and Viera Road will be the second in

Florida to open to traffic and several others are in various stages

of planning and design in Florida. This event was well attended

by individuals from several municipalities in Brevard County as

well as the consulting community. A special thanks to Steve

Wigle of WSP for arranging for Mike to speak to us, and to our

two sponsors – TranSystems and The Viera Company. The

sponsorships allowed us to offer our attendees a free lunch and professional development hours.

Bradford County Flood Abatement after Hurricane

Irma Utilizing NRCS Funding

On January 17, 2019 at the City of Edgewater, Chad Rishar and

John Gilreath of DRMP provided a very interesting presentation

on how DRMP assisted Bradford County to accomplish an

important Post-Hurricane Irma flood abatement project with

grants from NRCS and the Suwannee River Water Management

District. DRMP teamed with the County Sheriff’s Department

to develop innovative workflows to plan, design, permit, and administer the construction of the improvements to County’s

waterways. Advanced GIS techniques coupled with on-the-

ground knowledge provided the selected contractor a plan to

access and remove great quantities of fallen vegetation that was

clogging the waterways after Hurricane Irma. The event was

well attended by Public Works officials and the consulting

community. A special thanks to our sponsor, DRMP, and our

host, The City of Edgewater. Thanks to our sponsor, we were able to offer our membership a free lunch and professional

development hours.

Flexible and Rigid Stormwater Conveyance Systems

On January 30, 2019, Cate Thompson from ADS began the meeting with a presentation on how HDPE & Polypropylene

meet FDOT’s 100-year

design service life, and

how thermoplastic pipe is

made and the

performance-based

standards that FDOT uses

to accept newly installed pipe. The presentation

was extremely informative

and was followed by a

tour of their Winter

Garden plant where we

learned about their quality control process and how they make

several kinds of pipe. A special thanks goes to Cate and her

ADS team for sponsoring the lunch and learn and for giving the attendees the opportunity to earn 2 professional development

hours. Also, thanks to the City of Edgewater for providing the

meeting location.

Control Project Risk Through Scheduling

On February 27, 2019 at Volusia County, Raquel Floyd, PSP, E.I.

from Rock Solid Solutions presented on how to minimize risk

for both the owner and contractor. She shared best practices

from over $7B in projects and over 400 project schedules,

varying from public works projects to heavy industrial to

specialty to high end private. Raquel shared many real-life

stories and addressed the outline of a successful project,

including owner contract requirements, work flow processes and “telling the story” through proactive project management.

Thanks to Rock Solid Solutions for providing the lunch and for

giving the attendees the opportunity to earn a professional

development hour. And, thank you to Volusia County for

providing a great meeting space.

CFB Summer Branch Meeting

CFB Rocks the Main Event!

Our summer business meeting and social event was at the Main

Event Entertainment in Orlando on September 27, 2018. The

event included dinner, bowling and a $10.00 funcard for arcade

games. The bowling competition was steep, the top scorer had a

152! Then we continued the competitive nature with a few arcade

games, air hockey, basketball, etc. Overall, it was a lot of fun,

and we plan to do it again.
