Beginning in the fourth decade of life, adults lose three to five per cent of muscle mass per decade, and the decline increases to one to two per cent per year after age 50. Muscle keeps us strong; it burns calories, helps us maintain our weight, and it contributes to balance and bone strength. Without it, we can lose our independence and our mobility. The good news is that muscle mass can increase at any age in response to exercise. What happens to endurance? Endurance decreases as we age but there’s good news when it comes to fitness, walking endurance, and health. In an impressive study, data collected on more than 41,000 men and women from 1990 to 2001 were analyzed to find the relationship between walking and mortality. It was reported that men and women who walked 30 minutes or more per day during the study period had fewer deaths than those who walked less than 30 minutes. Interestingly, even men and women who smoked or were overweight were protected from early death if they walked more than 30 minutes per day. What happens to flexibility? You guessed it. It decreases. The good news is that studies show improvements in function when individuals engage in exercise programs that involve stretching exercises with significant improvements in the range of motion of various joints. What happens to balance? Balance decreases as we age and falling is a major problem as a result. The good news is that physical activity can improve balance and reduce the risk of falling. Below is a description of what happens to our bodies as we age and how exercise can make all the difference.

What happens to muscles as we age? Muscle mass decreases as we age.

What happens to endurance?Endurance decreases as we age but there’s good news when it comes to fitness, walking endurance, and health. In an impressive study, data collected on more than 41,000 men and women from 1990 to 2001 were analyzed to find the relationship between walking and mortality. Interestingly, even men and women who smoked or were overweight were protected from early death if they walked more than 30 minutes per day.

unsteady while you walk (when you walk, one leg is in the air). Tai chi is excellent for this because it involves slow, coordinated movements, and particularly so since you lift one leg frequently while doing it.

Can exercise improve mood?It has been documented that exercise can alleviate symptoms of depression.

How much exercise do I need to do for health and fitness?Aerobic exercise (walking, jogging, dancing, biking, swimming, etc.): To promote and maintain health, older adults need moderate-intensity aerobic physical activity for a minimum of 30 minutes five days each week or vigorous intensity aerobic activity for a minimum of 20 minutes three days each week. (Moderate intensity is when you feel “warm and slightly out of breath,” and vigorous is when you feel “out of breath and sweaty.”)

Resistance exercise (weight lifting/body weight exercises): To promote and maintain health and physical independence, older adults will benefit

from performing activities that maintain or increase muscular strength and endurance for a minimum of two days each week. It is recommended that 8 to 10 exercises be performed on two or more nonconsecutive days per week using the major muscle groups.Flexibility exercise: To maintain the flexibility necessary for regular physical activity and daily life, older adults should perform activities (yoga, stretching) that maintain or

increase flexibility at least two days each week for at least 10 minutes each day.Balance exercise: To reduce risk of injury from falls, older adults would benefit

from performing exercises that maintain or improve balance.

PROGRAMS AVAILABLEThe Mission Leisure Centre offers numerous programs, such as yoga and tai chi, to improve your

strength, flexibility and endurance. A group

exercise class is a great way to improve your strength and energy in a social and supportive atmosphere. Instructors encourage you to exercise at your own level, modifying where you need and challenging you to do more when you are willing and able. You can meet new people, get fit, and have fun.Visit www.mission.ca for more details.

Mission: OAPO BR 28After enjoying a sabbatical for the summer, the Mission OAPO Branch 28 is back to start a busy year. Our convention held in Princeton in June was a great success with delegates from every branch in the province. We passed 39 resolutions that will be sent to the provincial government, the opposition, as well as the federal government. We must keep our politicians’ feet to the fire on senior issues. We started our fall sessions with a borscht lunch for all seniors in Mission on Aug. 30, 2013. We had approximately 50 seniors attending the meet and greet session. The first official meeting was held Friday, Sept. 13, 2013 at 1:30 p.m.

Our monthly birthday party will be Friday, Sept. 27, 2013 at 1:30 p.m.

The annual fall tea will be held on Oct. 12 everyone is welcome.

Autumn leaves bring out the best colours of the season and before you know it your property is covered with them. Unraked leaves can get matted down, suffocate grass and create optimal breeding grounds for insects and fungus. Remove leaves from your lawn to avoid dead patches and infestationsin the spring. Don’t worry about getting every leaf, those in the garden help keep plants insulated and as they decompose they will nourish the soil with valuable nutrients.

WHAT IS OSTEOFIT?

Osteofit is a BC Women’s Hospital & Health Centre certified exercise, education and fall prevention program for individuals with osteoporosis, low bone density or who are at risk of fractures and falls. Osteofit is medically endorsed and based on published research. It is designed and updated by clinical specialists from BC Women’s Hospital & Health Centre’s Osteoporosis program.

Exercise is a proven effective treatment option for people with osteoporosis in combination with medication and nutrition. The program is safe for individuals with osteoporosis, as well as addressing the need for an accessible community program providing the transition from physiotherapy to group fitness classes for those who are at risk for falls and fractures. The program aims to provide safe and gentle

exercises for individuals with minimal previous exercise experience.

The goals of Osteofit are to: • Reduce an individual’s risk of falls and fractures

• Improve an individual’s ability to do day-to-day activities

• Increase an individual’s confidence and independence

•Improve an individual’s quality of life As we all know falls are an important cause of

serious fracture. Approximately 30 per cent of individuals over 65 years of age fall at least once per year. Falls may result in individuals considerably reducing their activity for fear of future falls and almost half of fallers are unable to get up without help. Regular strength and balance training helps to prevent falls and it can reduce the risk of fall-related fractures in older adults.

There are two types of classes. Level 1 is an introductory level class that focuses on developing strength

and endurance in individuals with no previous experience working with exercise equipment.  Exercises include strength, agility, balance and resistance training. The goal is to improve participants’ capacity for activities of daily living.

In Level 2, participants undertake a progressively more difficult exercise program that challenges balance, strength and agility. The aim is to improve posture and the ability to move as needed for daily activities through safe and specific movements in a supportive environment.

All classes incorporate an education component. For further information please contact the Lifetime Learning Centre at 604-820-0220 or e-mail [email protected] or visit www.

Cedarbrooke Chateau has been providing outstanding excellence in service to seniors in Mission, Abbotsford and surrounding communities since opening in 2009. We are committed to providing quality services to seniors in a warm, friendly atmosphere. Our philosophy is “We are a community of kindness.” We support independence and respect individuality and believe that the choice is yours. Top-notch customer service is our mandate.

Our residence is located in a forested greenbelt with a salmon bearing creek around the property. Take advantage of the natural setting and enjoy walking

paths and nature trails with outstanding scenery. You will appreciate easy access to local amenities such as shopping, churches and cultural venues. Socialize with residents and caring staff or get energized with activities or an excursion to town or the country side. Make new friends and have fun!

Cedarbrooke Chateau is all about choices — offering services and lifestyle enhancement for people of all ages. Oasis Wellness Spa is located on our second floor and they provide many services including a relaxing

massage or acupressure. Dr. Gerald Nemanishen is our on-site physician and our residents may book an appointment with him in our medical office. Dr. Mark Mandelstam, physiotherapist, provides water therapy for his clients in our therapeutic pool. Fraser Health is now providing cluster care and Nurse Next Door also offers supportive services.

There are many attractive reasons for moving to a retirement residence. New friends, kind, caring staff and 24-hour emergency response are just a few of

the benefits. You may furnish and decorate your suite to your own taste.

Socialize with new friends in our restaurant-style dining room with your choice of where you would like to sit. A wide range of activities such as interesting outings, games, daily social hour and visiting entertainers are all available to residents and members of our exclusive Monarch Club. We offer instructor led exercise, yoga and aqua fit classes with strength and conditioning training. Our vision for activities is the promotion of mind, body and spirit wellness. There

is also a movie theatre, a chapel for religious services and a private dining room to entertain your family and friends. A bistro where you may enjoy refreshments and snacks is open 24 hours a day and residents are thrilled with the convenience of a hairdressing salon. A state of the art movie theatre and craft room where residents may enjoy instructor led art classes or order pizza with their families are just some of the great amenities offered at Cedarbrooke Chateau. Stop by any time for a warm welcome, a hot cup of coffee and a tour of our wonderful residence.

Something To Smile About! This couple have something to smile about. They used to wear dentures, which caused discomfort, an inability to eat many foods and a lack of confi dence when it came to smiling and talking.

Now they enjoy the freedom of NobelSmile dental implants, which areas close to natural teeth as you can get. People who lose a tooth want to replace it with something permanent, says Dr. Lui, instead of something they have to remove. “Once you give someone new, permanent teeth, you can see their personality shine through again.”
