OAPO secretary Darlene Bruntlett

Aging British Columbians are fearful of dementia but people can live well with the disease with the right care and support, says the Alzheimer Society of B.C.

More than 70,000 people in the province - many of them in the local area - live with dementia, and that number is increasing dramatically as the population ages. To help families, the Society runs free tele-workshops.

Heads Up: An Introduction to Brain Health, runs on Wednesday, June 4. It looks at Alzheimer’s disease and how it impacts the brain, the latest research on reducing your risk for dementia, and everyday tips for improving

brain health. It is designed for people with dementia, their

caregivers and the general public. The tele-workshop starts at 7 p.m.Connecting to the sessions is as easy as

phoning toll-free 1-866-994-7745, then entering pass code 1122333 when prompted and visiting momentum.adobeconnect.com/alzheimerbc and entering as a Guest to view the presentation online.

Tele-workshops are learning sessions designed for family caregivers, but are also open to health-care providers. Recognizing that many caregivers are unable to attend in-

person workshops, the sessions can be accessed by telephone and online (optional). At the end of the tele-workshop, participants have an opportunity to ask questions and share with others who are in similar situations.

For more information about other upcoming tele-workshops or to view shortened recordings of past sessions go to www.alzheimerbc.org/We-Can-Help/Telephone-Workshops.aspx.

For more information on Alzheimer’s disease and other dementias, which affect one in 11 Canadians over the age of 65, visit the Society website at www.alzheimerbc.org.

Mission Seniors Activity Centre presents

Sweetwater

Sweetwater, a versatile husband and wife duo, will be performing at an Afternoon Dance during Seniors Week at the Mission Seniors Activity Centre.

Bill and Marie play a wide range of music together, including rock classics, country, and Latin ballroom. Their music is popular with all ages, and they will even alter their music to encourage audiences to sing along and dance.

Marie is the lead singer with an energetic stage presence. Bill plays the guitar, banjo, keyboards, provides some vocals and arranges the synth background.

They have a full band sound and their set up includes stage lighting.

Bill and Marie have been married for 33 years and have been playing music together for more than 20. It started as an informal hobby when the couple semi-retired and moved to the Fraser Valley from Vancouver, but they soon started to get serious about.

“Bill was always in a band,” said Marie, who was encouraged by her husband to keep singing. “He’s a musician. I’ve always loved music, but I never dreamed I’d be performing in public.”

Bill and Marie have performed throughout the Lower Mainland, Vancouver Island and B.C. Interior.

Mission’s Afternoon Dance takes place Thursday, June 5 from 1 to 4 p.m. at the Mission Seniors Activity Centre, 33100 10 Ave. Tickets are $5 each and refreshments will be provided. To order your tickets, call Jean or Doug at 604-814-2188.

Kate Mancer, one of Canada’s most respected authorities in the seniors housing field, and the author of The Future of Seniors Housing: Planning, Building and Operating Successful Seniors Housing Projects, became an instant fan of life lease when she first learned about the model 15 years ago.

At that time she was working on a major report for Canada Mortgage and Housing Corporation (CMHC) called Alternate Tenure Arrangements. CMHC is Canada’s national housing agency. One of the alternate arrangements Kate studied was life lease. She travelled across the country visiting a number of life lease projects - talking to the managers, the residents and the non-profit societies that ran them.

“That’s what gave me the life lease bug because I could see how well they worked and how happy the people were who lived in them,” says Kate, a consultant with

Vancouver-based Terra Lumina Life Lease, now working with the Mission Association for Seniors Housing (MASH) on Cedar Valley Manor, a life lease nearing completion at 8358 Cedar Street in Mission.

Kate adds: “All of the research that’s been done on life lease shows that the degree of satisfaction is off the charts. People love living in them, partly because of their trust in the community based non-profits, like MASH, that sponsor and manage life lease projects. It’s also because of the simplicity, the safety and the security that living in a life lease provides.”

Buyers at Cedar Valley Manor have a 30 year lease which is registered on title. When they choose to move, they give 60 days’ notice and get 95% of their money back. Several of the buyers at Cedar Valley Manor have chosen to move there on the advice of their financial planners who value the life lease model for its security and its liquidity.

And of course in the case of Cedar Valley Manor, the very attractive unit designs and the high quality of construction don’t hurt either. “It’s all built to a really high quality because it’s MASH that is the owner of the building and will be maintaining it throughout its lifespan. It’s in their interest to build a quality building right from the outset.”

Here’s the conclusion of another report published by CMHC in

2007. That report is called An Examination of Life Lease Housing Issues

“Everyone in all 15 focus groups indicated that they would purchase a life lease unit again or advise a friend to purchase. Residents indicated that they were extremely happy in their choice of housing.”

Dental Implants gave us a confi dent smile

These people have something to smile about. They used to wear dentures, which caused discomfort, an inability to eat many foods and a lack of con dence when it came to smiling and talking.

Now they enjoy the freedom of NobelSmile dental implants, which areas close to natural teeth as you can get. People who lose a tooth want to replace it with something permanent, says Dr. Lui, instead of something they have to remove. “Once you give someone new, permanent teeth, you can see their personality shine through again.”
