Multiple Intelligence
Not all students learn the same way.
“So long as materials are taught and assessed in only one way, we will reach only a certain kind of child.”

Multiple Intelligence
Why Inclusion?
NCLB states that all students will reach high academic standards, attaining proficiency or better in reading and mathematics by 2013 - 2014
ϲIn the past, due to pull-out programs, special education students have missed out on grade level content instruction by expert teachers
Therefore
The best placement and least restrictive environment for most students is the general education classroom.
But they will need a great deal of assistance. Aides will follow the students to most
English and Math classes An extra class, Study Skills will be provided
to Reinforce and Re-teach.
What Can I do as a General Ed Teacher?
Use the adopted materials. The new textbooks have a massive amount
of resources to aide in re-teaching and differentiating instruction in the teacher wrap and ancillaries. (Universal Access)
Remember assessment drives instruction Differentiate Instruction
Differentiated Instruction

Special Education
Differentiated Instruction
Uses a variety of teaching techniques
Considers student’s learning styles
Provides choice in the method students will use to demonstrate understanding
Involves students using questions aimed at different level of thinking (Bloom’s Taxonomy)
Accepts that different methods are of equal value
Differentiated Instruction
One lesson is taught to the entire class, meeting the needs of all students.
The content, process, and product are the means by which the teacher meets their needs.
Separate content from process– Content remains the
same, but the process and product can be adjusted according to the students readiness level and learning profile.
Examples In ELA class teach the lesson to the entire
class. – Most student’s activity may be to write a 5
paragraph essay.– The honors student’s assignment may be a two
page essay.– The struggling student’s assignment may be a
five sentence paragraph or an outline / PowerPoint of the information

Sample Adaptations
For Several Different
Disabilities
Auditory Processing
Word Retrieval Limited Vocabulary Communicating with
peers and adults Remembering lecture
material Testing
Provide word bank Crosswords/review Graphic organizers Allow extra time Encourage use of rap,
chants, music to commit material to memory
Teach material in small chunks
Difficulties Adaptations
Emotional Behavioral Difficulty Transitions Adapting to different
classroom organization Focusing on task Accepting boundaries for
behavior Listening and attention
skills Picking up on facial
expressions and body language
Praise vs. disapproval 3:1
Have high expectations Cue to refocus on task Calm, structured
authoritative discipline approach
Behavior plans Establish eye contact
DifficultiesAdaptations
Visual Processing
Reading handwriting seeing/focusing on
board, overhead Taking notes Handwriting Copying from board Listening to lecture
while taking notes
Enlarge print Print or type Color in maps/texture Books on tape Cliff notes Guided outline for
notes Use buddy paper
Difficulties Adaptations
Specific Learning Disability
Organization of work Poor tester Reading at speed Remembering and
following instructions Writing legibly Skips steps in math Anxious, frustrated
Write down assignments Planner Color coded notes Special place in classroom
for schoolwork/homework Teach test taking
strategies Small groups
AdaptationsDifficulties
Using Word for Accommodations
Summarizing Text– Research papers
Online Information– copy/paste into Word– Auto-summarize
Readability– Word can display the reading
level of any document
